The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." She the daughter of [her grandfather] Bernard II Duke of Saxony (age 55) and [her grandmother] Eilika Schweinfurt Duchess Saxony. He the son of [her grandfather] Dirk Gerulfing III Count Holland and [her grandmother] Othelindis d Bernard Margrave Nordmark Count Holland.

Around 1055 Bertha Gerulfing Queen Consort France was born to Floris Gerulfing I Count Holland (age 29) and Gertrude Billung Countess Holland (age 25).

On 28th June 1061 [her father] Floris Gerulfing I Count Holland (age 36) was killed when he was ambushed retreating from Zaltbommel and killed in battle at Hamerth. His son [her brother] Dirk (age 9) succeeded V Count Holland.

Before 1065 [her step-father] Robert "The Frisian" I Count Flanders (age 31) and [her mother] Gertrude Billung Countess Holland (age 34) were married. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Bernard II Duke of Saxony and [her grandmother] Eilika Schweinfurt Duchess Saxony. He the son of Baldwin "The Good" V Count Flanders (age 52) and Adela Capet Duchess Normandy (age 55). They were second cousin twice removed.

In 1072 King Philip I of France (age 19) and Bertha Gerulfing Queen Consort France (age 17) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort of France. She the daughter of Floris Gerulfing I Count Holland and Gertrude Billung Countess Holland (age 42). He the son of King Henry I of France and Anne Rurik Queen Consort France (age 42). They were half fourth cousin twice removed.

In 1078 [her daughter] Constance Capet Countess Champagne was born to [her husband] King Philip I of France (age 25) and Bertha Gerulfing Queen Consort France (age 23).

On 1st December 1081 [her son] King Louis VI of France was born to [her husband] King Philip I of France (age 29) and Bertha Gerulfing Queen Consort France (age 26).

In 1083 [her son] Henry Capet died.
