Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Around 1434 Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland was born to [her father] Arnold Egmont Duke Guelders [aged 23] and [her mother] Catherine de la Marck [aged 16] at Grave.
On 21st February 1437 King James I of Scotland [aged 42] was assassinated at Blackfriars. He was buried at Carthusian Charterhouse, Perth. His son [her future husband] James [aged 6] succeeded II King Scotland. His wife, Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland [aged 33], managed to escape.
On 24th November 1440 William Crichton 1st Lord Crichton arranged a dinner of reconciliation at the Great Hall, Edinburgh Castle. During the course of the dinner the young brothers William Douglas 3rd Duke Touraine [aged 16] and David Douglas [aged 10] was beheaded in front of the young [her future husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 10].
On 3rd July 1449 Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 15] was crowned Queen Consort Scotland.
On 3rd July 1449 King James II of Scotland [aged 18] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 15] were married at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood. She the daughter of Arnold Egmont Duke Guelders [aged 38] and Catherine de la Marck [aged 32]. He the son of King James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.
On 19th May 1450 [her son] Unamed Stewart was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 19] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 16]. He died the same day. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England.
On 10th July 1451 [her son] King James III of Scotland was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 20] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 17]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England. He married July 1469 Margaret Oldenburg Queen Consort Scotland and had issue.
On 22nd February 1452 William Douglas 8th Earl Douglas 2nd Earl Avondale [aged 27] was murdered by [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 21] at Edinburgh Castle [Map] for refusing to desist from conspiring with Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford [aged 29]. His brother James [aged 26] succeeded 9th Earl Douglas, 3rd Earl Avondale.
On 18th May 1452 the Battle of Brechin was fought between supporters of [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 21] and his rellious nobility including the Black Douglases. Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley defeated the rebels led by Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford [aged 29] on behalf on the King. John Lindsay [aged 29], and the brothers William Gordon and Henry Gordon, were killed.
On 13th May 1453 [her daughter] Mary Stewart Countess Arran was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 22] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 19] at Stirling Castle [Map]. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married (1) before 26th April 1467 Thomas Boyd 1st Earl Arran and had issue (2) before 12th July 1474 James Hamilton 1st Lord Hamilton and had issue.
Around 1454 [her son] Alexander Stewart 1st Duke Albany was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 23] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 20]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England. He married (1) before 1477 his second cousin Catherine Sinclair Duchess Albany, daughter of William Sinclair 3rd Earl Orkney 1st Earl Caithness and Elizabeth Douglas Countess Buchan and Orkney, and had issue (2) 16th January 1479 Anne de la Tour Auvergne Duchess Albany, daughter of Bertrand Auvergne VI Count Auvergne and Louise de La Trémoïlle, and had issue.
Around 1455 [her son] David Stewart was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 24] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 21]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England.
In August 1455 George Crichton 1st Earl Caithness [aged 46] died. Earl Caithness reverted to the Crown following a disagreement between George Crichton 1st Earl Caithness and his son James Crichton from inheriting. James Crichton had imprisoned his father in Blackness Castle; he was rescued by [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 24].
Around 1456 [her son] John Stewart 1st Earl of Mar was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 25] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 22]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England.
Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

In 1458 George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 2] and [her sister-in-law] Anabella Stewart [aged 22] were married. She the daughter of King James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley and Elizabeth Crichton Countess Huntley [aged 47].
Around 1459 [her brother-in-law] John Stewart 1st Earl Atholl [aged 19] and Margaret "Fair Lady of Galloway" Douglas Countess [aged 24] were married. She by marriage Countess Atholl. She the daughter of Archibald Douglas 2nd Duke Touraine and Euphemia Graham Lady Hamilton [aged 51]. He the son of James "Black Knight of Lorn" Stewart and Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. They were half fifth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.
On 15th May 1459 James Douglas 1st Earl Morton and [her sister-in-law] Joan Stewart Countess Morton [aged 31] were married. She by marriage Countess Morton. She the daughter of King James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. They were first cousin once removed. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
Around 1460 [her daughter] Princess Margaret Stewart was born to [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 29] and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 26]. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married 1473 William Crichton 3rd Lord Crichton and had issue.
On 3rd August 1460 [her husband] King James II of Scotland [aged 29] was killed accidentally whilst besieging Roxburgh Castle when a cannon exploded and he was hit by debris. He was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood. His son James [aged 9] succeeded III King Scotland.
William Douglas 3rd Lord Drumlanrig [aged 20] was present.
Around June 1462 a Scottish and Lancastrian force, including King James III of Scotland [aged 10], his mother Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 28], King Henry VI of England and II of France [aged 40] and his wife Margaret of Anjou Queen Consort England [aged 32], laid siege to Norham Castle [Map]. They held Norham for eighteen days until a force led by Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury [aged 33] and his brother John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu [aged 31] advanced to Norham Castle [Map] at which time the Scottish and Lancastrian force fled in panic pursued by the Yorkist army. Margaret of Anjou Queen Consort England and her son Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales [aged 8] escaped to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland [Map] and then to the continent. King Henry VI of England and II of France remained in Scotland - he and his wife never saw each other again.
On 1st December 1463 Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland [aged 29] died at Roxburgh Castle. She was buried at Holyrood Abbey [Map].
