Biography of Hugh Lacy 1134-1186

Paternal Family Tree: Lacy

In or before 1134 Hugh Lacy was born to Gilbert de Lacy.

In 1155 Hugh Lacy (age 21) and Rohese Monmouth Baroness Lacy were married.

After 1163 [his father] Gilbert de Lacy died.

In 1166 [his son] Walter Lacy Lord Meath was born to Hugh Lacy (age 32) and [his wife] Rohese Monmouth Baroness Lacy.

In 1172 Hugh Lacy (age 38) was created Lord Meath. [his wife] Rohese Monmouth Baroness Lacy by marriage Lord Meath.

On 29th December 1172 Hugh Lacy (age 38) visited Canterbury, Kent [Map].

In 1173 Hugh Lacy (age 39) held against Louis VII King Franks (age 53) at Verneuil-sur-Avre, Eure, Haute Normandie.

Around 1176 [his son] Hugh de Lacy was born to Hugh Lacy (age 42) and [his wife] Rohese Monmouth Baroness Lacy.

On 25th July 1186 Hugh Lacy (age 52) was killed by Gilla-Gan-Mathiar O'Maidhaigh at Durrow, County Offaly. He was buried at Durrow Abbey, Durrow, County Offaly, reburied at Bective Abbey, County Meath and reburied again at St Thomas' Abbey, Dublin.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
