The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 06 Jan 1338 [his father] (age 33) died. His son James Butler 2nd Earl Ormonde (age 6) succeeded 2nd Earl Ormonde.
In 1343 [his step-father] Thomas Dagworth 1st Baron Dagworth (age 67) and [his mother] Eleanor Bohun Countess Ormonde (age 38) were married. The difference in their ages was 28 years. Around 07 Jan 1345 [his future brother-in-law] John Darcy 2nd Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 28) and Elizabeth Meinhill Baroness Darcy Knayth and Haversham (age 13) were married.
On 15 May 1346 James Butler 2nd Earl Ormonde (age 14) and (age 14) were married at Ormond, County Tipperary. She by marriage Countess Ormonde. She the daughter of John Darcy 1st Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 66) and Joan Burgh Countess Kildare 1300-1359 (age 46). He the son of James Butler 1st Earl Ormonde 1305-1338 and Eleanor Bohun Countess Ormonde (age 41). They were third cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Edward "Longshanks" I of England.
On 30 May 1347 [his father-in-law] John Darcy 1st Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 67) died. He was buried at Guisborough Priory [Map]. His son [his brother-in-law] John Darcy 2nd Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 30) succeeded 2nd Baron Darcy of Knayth. Elizabeth Meinhill Baroness Darcy Knayth and Haversham (age 15) by marriage Baroness Darcy of Knayth.
In 1356 [his brother-in-law] John Darcy 2nd Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 39) died. In 1356 His son John Darcy 3rd Baron Darcy of Knayth (age 5) succeeded 3rd Baron Darcy of Knayth.
In 1359 [his son-in-law] (age 24) and [his daughter] were married. She by marriage Countess Desmond. She the daughter of James Butler 2nd Earl Ormonde 1331-1382 (age 27) and Elizabeth Darcy Countess Ormonde 1332-1390 (age 26). He the son of Maurice Fitzgerald 1st Earl Desmond -1356 and . In 1363 [his mother] Eleanor Bohun Countess Ormonde (age 58) died.
After 1365 [his brother-in-law] Henry Darcy (age 35) died.
On 18 Oct 1382 James Butler 2nd Earl Ormonde (age 51) died. His son [his son] (age 23) succeeded 3rd Earl Ormonde.
