The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In 1423 Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford was born to David Lindsay 3rd Earl Crawford (age 18).

Before 1440 [his daughter] Elizabeth Lindsay Lady Drummond was born to Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 16) and [his wife] Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 14).

Before 1440 Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 16) and Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 14) were married. He the son of David Lindsay 3rd Earl Crawford (age 34). They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1440 [his son] David Lindsay 1st Duke Montrose was born to Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 17) and [his wife] Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 15).

After 1440 [his son] Alexander Lindsay 7th Earl Crawford was born to Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 17) and [his wife] Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 15).

Battle of Arbroath

On 24th January 1445 the Battle of Arbroath was fought between Clan Lindsay and Clans Ogilvy, Gordon, Oliphant, Seton and Forbes. [his father] David Lindsay 3rd Earl Crawford (age 40) was killed when attempting to prevent the battle by riding between the two armies in an attempt to call a truce. Unfortunately a member of the Clan Ogilvy, thinking the Earl was attacked threw his spear at the Earl, hitting him in the mouth, killing him instantly. Clan Lindsay victorious. His son Alexander (age 22) succeeded 4th Earl Crawford. [his wife] Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 20) by marriage Countess Crawford.

On 22nd February 1452 William Douglas 8th Earl Douglas 2nd Earl Avondale (age 27) was murdered by King James II of Scotland (age 21) at Edinburgh Castle [Map] for refusing to desist from conspiring with Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 29). His brother James (age 26) succeeded 9th Earl Douglas, 3rd Earl Avondale.

1452 Battle of Brechin

On 18th May 1452 the Battle of Brechin was fought between supporters of King James II of Scotland (age 21) and his rellious nobility including the Black Douglases. Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley defeated the rebels led by Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 29) on behalf on the King. [his brother] John Lindsay (age 29), and the brothers William Gordon and Henry Gordon, were killed.

In 1453 Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford (age 30) died. His son [his son] David (age 13) succeeded 5th Earl Crawford.

Before January 1499 [his former wife] Margaret Dunbar Countess Crawford (age 74) died.
