Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Biography of Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell 1893-1986

On 28th July 1890 [his father] William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and [his mother] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 25) were married.

On 28th April 1893 Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell was born to [his father] William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and [his mother] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 28).

On 17th February 1920 Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell (age 26) and Sybil Rose Neumann Baroness Grimston were married. This marriage was annulled in 1921.

On 24th October 1923 Robert Villiers Grimston 1st Baron Grimston (age 26) and [his wife] Sybil Rose Neumann Baroness Grimston were married.

In October 1942 Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell (age 49) and Eileen Beryl Tilley (age 34) were married.

On 24th October 1944 [his father] William Dudgeon Graham Menzies died.

After 1948. Memorial to [his mother] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 83) at St Michael's Church, Coxwold, North Yorkshire [Map] erected by her son Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell (age 54).

Cecilia Clementia Wombwell: On 25th October 1864 she was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell. On 28th July 1890 William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and she were married. On 20th January 1948 Cecilia Clementia Wombwell died.

On 20th January 1948 [his mother] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 83) died.

Eileen Beryl Tilley: On 1st March 1908 she was born. In October 1942 Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell and she were married. On 18th August 1977 she died.

On 8th June 1986 Captain Victor Malcolm Wombwell (age 93) died.
