The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 3rd September 1660 [his father] James, Duke of York (age 26) and [his mother] Anne Hyde (age 23) were married in secret. She by marriage Duchess York. She gave birth to their son Charles Stewart seven weeks later. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Edward Hyde 1st Earl Clarendon (age 51) and [his grandmother] Frances Aylesbury Countess Clarendon (age 43). He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and [his grandmother] Henrietta Maria Bourbon Queen Consort England (age 50).

On 22nd October 1660 Charles Stewart was born to James, Duke of York (age 27) and Anne Hyde Duchess of York (age 23) at Worcester House Worcester Park Sutton, Surrey.

Diary of John Nicoll. 1st January 1661. We find in the Inglifche Diurnell, that Charles, fone to his Royall hynes [his father] James Duke of York (age 27), (onlie brother to our lord the King) wes, upone the firft day of this moneth of Januar, baptized by Gilbert Lord Bifhop of Lundon, at Worchefter hous, quhair wes prefent his Majeftie himfelf; quho, with the Duke of Albemarle (age 52), wer the two godfatheris, and the Marchiones of Ormond (age 45) godmother; thair being alfo prefent his heynes Prince Rupert (age 41), the Lord Heigh Treafaurer, the Lord Stewart, and Lord Chalmerland of his Majefteis counfall, with many uther perfonages of honor, befyde the [his grandfather] Lord Heigh Chancellar (age 51) himfelf, father to hir heynes [his mother] Anne Dutches of York (age 23), quho that fame nycht fuped with the Quene, and the nixt day dyned with his Majeftie and his hynes the Duke of York (hir hulband) in the prefence chalmer at Quhytehall. And now the good pepill of England haif thair wifches, feing thai lie a grandchyld of that verteous king, Charles the Confeffor and martyre, borne in England, quhome it hath pleafed his Majeftie to creat Duke of Cambridge; and a Dutches of York of thair awin cuntrie, and of thair awin religion.

On 5th May 1661 Charles Stewart died of smallpox at Whitehall Palace [Map].

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 6th May 1661. Up by four o'clock and took coach. Mr. Creed rode, and left us that we know not whither he went. We went on, thinking to be at home before the officers rose, but finding we could not we staid by the way and eat some cakes, and so home, where I was much troubled to see no more work done in my absence than there was, but it could not be helped. I sent my wife to my father's, and I went and sat till late with my Lady Batten, both the Sir Williams being gone this day to pay off some ships at Deptford. So home and to bed without seeing of them. I hear to-night that the [his father] Duke of York's (age 27) son (deceased) is this day dead, which I believe will please every body; and I hear that the Duke and his [his mother] Lady (age 24) themselves are not much troubled at it.

On 6th May 1661 Charles Stewart (deceased) was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map].

On 20th September 1673 [his father] James, Duke of York (age 39) and [his step-mother] Mary of Modena Queen Consort England Scotland and Ireland (age 14) were married. The difference in their ages was 24 years. He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and [his grandmother] Henrietta Maria Bourbon Queen Consort England.
