Biography of Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe 1827-1899

Maternal Family Tree: Catherine Cochrane Countess Galloway 1709-1786

In 1825 [his father] John Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 2nd Baron Wharncliffe (age 23) and [his mother] Georgiana Elizabeth Ryder Baroness Wharncliffe (age 20) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Dudley Ryder 1st Earl of Harrowby (age 62) and [his grandmother] Susanna Leveson-Gower Countess Harrowby Lincolnshire (age 52). They were third cousin once removed.

On 15th December 1827 Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe was born to John Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 2nd Baron Wharncliffe (age 26) and Georgiana Elizabeth Ryder Baroness Wharncliffe (age 23).

In 1855 Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe (age 27) and Susan Charlotte Lascelles Countess Wharncliffe (age 21) were married. She the daughter of Henry Lascelles 3rd Earl Harewood (age 57) and Louisa Thynne Countess Harewood (age 53). They were sixth cousins.

On 22nd October 1855 [his father] John Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 2nd Baron Wharncliffe (age 54) died. He was buried at the Church of St Leonard, Wortley [Map].His son Edward (age 27) succeeded 3rd Baron Wharncliffe of Wortley in Yorkshire.

On 22nd February 1857 [his father-in-law] Henry Lascelles 3rd Earl Harewood (age 59) died. His son [his brother-in-law] Henry (age 32) succeeded 4th Earl Harewood in Yorkshire, 4th Viscount Lascelles, 4th Baron Harewood of Harewood in Yorkshire.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 21st April 1858 [his brother-in-law] Henry Thynne Lascelles 4th Earl Harewood (age 33) and Diana Smyth Countess Harewood (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Harewood in Yorkshire. He the son of [his father-in-law] Henry Lascelles 3rd Earl Harewood and [his mother-in-law] Louisa Thynne Countess Harewood (age 57).

Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe (age 48) was created 1st Earl Wharncliffe. [his wife] Susan Charlotte Lascelles Countess Wharncliffe (age 42) by marriage Countess Wharncliffe.

John Ormsby-Gore 1st Baron Harlech (age 59) was created 1st Baron Harlech with remainder to his brother William in the absence of male heirs.

Henry Gerard Sturt 1st Baron Alington (age 50) was created 1st Baron Alington. Augusta Bingham Baroness Alington (age 43) by marriage Baroness Alington.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignities of an Earl and Marquess of the said United Kingdom to William, Earl of Abergavenny (age 49), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, styles, and titles of Earl of Lewes, in the County of Sussex, and Marquess of Abergavenny, in the County of Monmonth.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignities of a Viscount and Earl of the said United Kingdom to Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Lord Wharncliffe (age 48), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, styles, and titles of Viscount Carlton, of Carlton, and Earl of Wharncliffe, bdth in the West Riding of the County of York; with remainder, in default of such issue male, to the Honourable [his brother] Francis Dudley Stuart-Wortley (age 46) (brother of the said Edward Montagu Stuart Granville, Lord Wharncliffe), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom to John, Earl of Erne (age 73), in that part of the said United Kingdom called Ireland, K.P., and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Fermanagh, of Lisnaskea, in the County of Fermanagh.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom to John Ralph Ormsby-Gore (age 59), Esq, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Harlech, of Harlech, in the County of Merioneth; with remainder, in default of snch issue male, to William Richard Ormsby-Gore, Esq (age 56). (brother of the said John Ralph Ormsby-Gore), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom to Henry Gerard Sturt (age 50), Esq, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Alington, of Crichel, in the County of Dorset.

The Queen has also been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the said Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom to John Tollemache, Esq, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Tollemache, of Helmingham Hall, in the County of Suffolk.

1881. Edward Poynter 1st Baronet (age 44). Portrait of Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe (age 53).

1884. Edward Coley Burne-Jones 1st Baronet (age 50). "King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid". Model probably the artist's wife Georgiana Macdonald Lady Burne-Jones (age 43) or Julia Prinsep Jackson (age 37). Inspired by Tennyson's (age 74) poem The Beggar Maid. The painting was purchased Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe (age 56).

On 22nd August 1884 [his mother] Georgiana Elizabeth Ryder Baroness Wharncliffe (age 80) died. She was buried at the Church of St Leonard, Wortley [Map].

On 13th May 1899 Edward Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Earl Wharncliffe (age 71) died without issue. His nephew Francis (age 42) succeeded 2nd Earl Wharncliffe, 4th Baron Wharncliffe of Wortley in Yorkshire. Ellen Gallwey Countess of Wharncliffe (age 36) by marriage Countess Wharncliffe.

In 1927 [his former wife] Susan Charlotte Lascelles Countess Wharncliffe (age 93) died.
