Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Around 1531 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent was born illegitimately to [his father] King James V of Scotland [aged 18] and [his mother] Margaret Erskine [aged 15]. He a great grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 31st August 1536 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 5] received a royal charter granting the lands of Tantallon and others.

On 1st January 1537 [his father] King James V of Scotland [aged 24] and Madeleine Valois [aged 16] were married at Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral [Map]. She the daughter of King Francis I of France [aged 42] and Claude Valois Orléans Queen Consort France. He the son of [his grandfather] King James IV of Scotland and [his grandmother] Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland [aged 47]. They were third cousin once removed. He a grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 17th July 1537 Janet Douglas Lady Glamis [aged 39] was burned at the stake at Edinburgh Castle [Map] for conspiring against the [his father] king's [aged 25] life. Her son, John 7th Lord Glamis Lyon [aged 16], was supposedly a witness to the burning.

In 1538 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 7] was appointed Prior of St Andrew's securing his income.

On 18th June 1538 [his father] King James V of Scotland [aged 26] and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland [aged 22] were married at St Andrew's Cathedral Priory, St Andrew's. She by marriage Queen Consort Scotland. She the daughter of Claude Lorraine 1st Duke Guise [aged 41] and Antoinette Bourbon Duchess of Guise [aged 45]. He the son of [his grandfather] King James IV of Scotland and [his grandmother] Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland [aged 48]. They were third cousins. He a grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Before 20th April 1541 [his half-brother] Robert Stewart 1st Earl Albany was styled 1st Earl Albany Styled 1541.

On 20th April 1541 [his half-brother] Robert Stewart 1st Earl Albany died being only eight days old.

Death of King James V of Scotland

On 14th December 1542 [his father] King James V of Scotland [aged 30] died at Falkland Palace [Map]. His daughter [his half-sister] Mary succeeded I Queen Scotland. She was six days old.

Around September 1543 James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran [aged 27] was created 1st Duke Châtellerault. Margaret Douglas Duchess Châtellerault by marriage Duchess Châtellerault. He was awrded the Duchy for having arranged the marriage of [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots and the Dauphin.

In 1556 Sébastien de Luxembourg Duke of Penthièvre [aged 26] and Marie de Beaucaire [aged 21] were married. She a Lady in Waiting to [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 13].

On 5th August 1557 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 26] and his half-brother [his illegitimate half-brother] Lord Robert [aged 24], and Lord Home [aged 22] led a raiding party from Edinburgh towards Ford Castle in Northumberland and burnt houses at Fenton before retreating on the approach of an English force led by Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland.

Marriage of Mary Queen of Scots and the Francis Dauphin of France

On 24th April 1558 [his brother-in-law] Dauphin of France [aged 14] and [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 15] were married at Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral [Map]. He by marriage King Consort Scotland. She the daughter of [his father] King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland [aged 42]. He the son of King Henry II of France [aged 39] and Catherine Medici Queen Consort France [aged 39]. They were third cousins. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Henry II of France Dies Francis and Mary "Queen of Scots" Succeeds

On 10th July 1559 King Henry II of France [aged 40] was killed whilst jousting in celebration of his daughter's [aged 14] marriage to Philip "The Prudent" II King Spain [aged 32]. His son [his brother-in-law] Francis [aged 15] succeeded II King France: Capet Valois Angoulême. [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 16] by marriage Queen Consort France. They would reign for eighteen months only with Francis dying in Dec 1560. Francis and Mary would have no issue.

Death of King Francis II of France

On 5th December 1560 [his brother-in-law] Francis II King France King Consort Scotland [aged 16] died, possibly from an ear abscess, in the Hotel Groslot, Orléans. On 23rd December 1560 he was buried at the Basilica of St Denis [Map]. His brother Charles [aged 10] succeeded IX King France: Capet Valois Angoulême; his mother Catherine Medici Queen Consort France [aged 41] acted as Regent. His wife [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 17] returned to Scotland arriving at Leith 19th August 1561 after having been in France for thirteen years.

On 14th December 1561 [his illegitimate half-brother] Robert Stewart 1st Earl Orkney [aged 28] and [his sister-in-law] Jean Kennedy Countess Orkney were married. She by marriage Countess Orkney. She the daughter of Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis and Margaret Kennedy Countess Cassilis [aged 47]. He the illegitmate son of [his father] King James V of Scotland and Euphame Elphinstone [aged 52]. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 7th February 1562 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 31] was created 1st Earl Moray and 1st Earl Mar.

On 8th February 1562 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 31] and Agnes Keith Countess Moray and Mar [aged 31] were married at St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh. She by marriage Countess Moray and Countess Mar. She the daughter of William Keith 4th Earl Marischal [aged 55] and Margaret Keith Countess Marischal. He the illegitmate son of King James V of Scotland and Margaret Erskine [aged 46]. They were fourth cousins. He a great grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

In 1565 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 34] Earl Mar forfeit following his rebellion in protest at the marriage of [his half-sister] Mary, Queen of Scots [aged 22], and [his future brother-in-law] Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley [aged 19].

On 29th July 1565 [his brother-in-law] Henry "Lord Darnley" Stewart [aged 19] and [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 22] were married at Holyrood Palace, Holyrood. She the daughter of [his father] King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of Matthew Stewart 4th Earl Lennox [aged 48] and [his aunt] Margaret Douglas Countess Lennox [aged 49]. They were half first cousins. He a great grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

In August 1565 [his daughter] Elizabeth Stewart 2nd Countess Moray was born to James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 34] and Agnes Keith Countess Moray and Mar [aged 35]. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. She married 23rd January 1581 her third cousin James "The Bonnie Earl" Stewart 2nd Earl of Moray and had issue.

Murder of David Rizzio

On 9th March 1566 at eight o'clock in the evening David Rizzio [aged 33] was murdered in the presence of the six months pregnant Mary Queen of Scots [aged 23] and her half-sister Jean Stewart Countess Argyll [aged 33] at Holyrood Palace [Map] by rebels led by Patrick Ruthven 3rd Lord Ruthven. Rizzio was dragged through the bed chamber into the adjacent Audience Chamber and stabbed an alleged 57 times. Mary's husband Henry "Lord Darnley" Stewart [aged 20] was suspected of being one of the murderers.

On 15th March 1566 Mary Queen of Scots writes to Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland [aged 32]:

As first hes takin our houss slane our maist [most] speciall servand in our awin [own] presence & thaireftir haldin our propper personis captive tressonneblie, quhairby [whereby] we war constrainit to escaipe straitlie about midnyght out of our palice of halliruidhouss [Map] to the place quhair [where] we ar for the present, in the grittest danger feir of our lywis & ewill [ill] estate that evir princes on earth stuid [stood] in.

We thotht to have writtin to you this letter with oure awin [own] hand, that therby ye myght have better onestand all our meaning & takin mair [more] familliarlie therewit. Bot of trewt [truth] we ar so tyrit [tired] & ewill [ill] at eass [ease], quhat [what] throw rydding of twenty millis [miles] in v [5] horis [hours] of the nyght as wit the frequent seikness & weill dispositioun be th'occasioun of our child/that we could not at this tyme as we was willing to have done…

Jean Stewart Countess Argyll: Around 1533 she was born illegitimately to King James V of Scotland and Elizabeth Bethune. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. Patrick Ruthven 3rd Lord Ruthven: he was born to William Ruthven 2nd Lord Ruthven and Janet Halyburton Lady Dirletoun. Before 1551 Patrick Ruthven 3rd Lord Ruthven and Janet Douglas were married. She the illegitmate daughter of Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus. After 1551 Patrick Ruthven 3rd Lord Ruthven and Janet Stewart were married. His second marriage, her fourth. She the daughter of John Stewart 2nd Earl Atholl and Janet Campbell Countess Atholl. On 13th May 1566 Patrick Ruthven 3rd Lord Ruthven died.

Marriage of Mary "Queen of Scots" and Lord Bothwell

On 15th May 1567 [his brother-in-law] James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney [aged 33] and [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 24] were married in the Great Hall Holyrood House. She the daughter of [his father] King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of Patrick Hepburn 3rd Earl Bothwell and Agnes Sinclair Countess Bothwell. They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Battle of Langside

On 13th May 1568 the army of [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 25] commanded by [his brother-in-law] Archibald Campbell 5th Earl Argyll [aged 34] was defeated by the army of the Regent her illegitimate half-brother James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 37].

John Campbell was killed.

William "Younger" Douglas 7th Lord Drumlanrig and Robert Seton 1st Earl Winton [aged 15] fought.

Claud Hamilton 1st Lord Paisley [aged 21] and George Seton 7th Lord Seton [aged 37] fought for the Queen.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Assassinated by Firearm

On 23rd January 1570 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray Regent [aged 39] was assassinated at Linlithgow by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, a supporter of [his half-sister] Mary Queen of Scots [aged 27]. His daughter Elizabeth [aged 4] succeeded 2nd Countess Moray. As he was passing in a cavalcade in the main street below, Hamilton fatally wounded him with a carbine shot from a window of his uncle Archbishop Hamilton's [aged 57] house. He was the first head of government to be assassinated by a firearm.
