The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In February 1566 James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 32) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Bothwell. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley. He the son of Patrick Hepburn 3rd Earl Bothwell and Agnes Sinclair Countess Bothwell. They were third cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 7th May 1567 James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 33) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 21) were divorced.

Marriage of Mary "Queen of Scots" and Lord Bothwell

On 15th May 1567 [her former husband] James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 33) and Mary Queen of Scots (age 24) were married in the Great Hall Holyrood House. She the daughter of King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of Patrick Hepburn 3rd Earl Bothwell and Agnes Sinclair Countess Bothwell. They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 23rd June 1567 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland (age 42) died at Dunrobin Castle, Dunrobin. His son [her future husband] Alexander (age 15) succeeded 12th Earl Sutherland. Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 21) by marriage Countess Sutherland.

On 13th December 1573 Alexander Gordon 12th Earl Sutherland (age 21) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 27) were married at Huntly Castle, Huntly. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley. He the son of John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland and Helen or Eleanor Stewart Countess Erroll and Sutherland. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

In April 1578 [her former husband] James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 44) died at Dragsholm Castle. His nephew Francis (age 15) succeeded 5th Earl Bothwell at Great Hall Stirling Castle.

In 1594 [her husband] Alexander Gordon 12th Earl Sutherland (age 42) died. His son John (age 18) succeeded 13th Earl Sutherland.

On 10th December 1599 Alexander Ogilvy and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 53) were married. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley.
