Biography of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar 1562-1634

Around 1562 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar was born to John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar.

On 28th October 1572 [his father] John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar died at Stirling [Map]. On 28th October 1572 His son John (age 10) succeeded 19th Earl Mar. [his future wife] Anne Drummond Countess Mar (age 17) by marriage Countess Mar.

In October 1580 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 18) and Anne Drummond Countess Mar (age 25) were married. He the son of John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar.

Raid of Ruthven

22nd August 1582. The Raid of Ruthven was a plot by several nobles led by William Ruthven 1st Earl Gowrie (age 39) to kidnap the fifteen years old King James VI of Scotland (age 16), son of Mary Queen of Scots (age 39), (before he became King of England) to reform the government of Scotland.

The nobles included John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 20), Thomas Lyon Master of Glamis, Robert Boyd 5th Lord Boyd (age 65), Patrick Lindsay 6th Lord Lindsay of the Byres (age 61), and David Erskine Commendator of Dryburgh.

They were opposed by Esme Stewart 1st Duke Lennox (age 40) and James Stewart 1st Earl Arran who controlled the government.

King James VI of Scotland was captured whilst hunting near Ruthven Castle.

The rebels were joined by Francis Stewart 5th Earl Bothwell (age 19) and James Cunningham 7th Earl Glencairn (age 30).

Esme Stewart 1st Duke Lennox was exiled; he died a year later in Paris. James Stewart 1st Earl Arran was imprisoned.

Around 1585 [his son] John Erskine 20th Earl of Mar was born to John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 23) and [his wife] Anne Drummond Countess Mar (age 30).

In 1587 [his wife] Anne Drummond Countess Mar (age 32) died.

In December 1592 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 30) and Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 10) were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. The difference in their ages was 20 years. She the daughter of Esme Stewart 1st Duke Lennox and Catherine Balsac Duchess Lennox. He the son of John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar. They were third cousin once removed.

In 1594 [his son] James Erskine Earl Buchan was born to John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 32) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 12) at Stirling Castle [Map].

On 11th January 1597 [his daughter] Anne Erskine Countess of Rothes was born to John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 35) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 15) at Stirling Castle [Map].

Around August 1598 [his brother-in-law] Ludovic Stewart 2nd Duke Lennox 1st Duke Richmond (age 23) and Jean Campbell Duchess Lennox (age 45) were married. She by marriage Duchess Lennox. The difference in their ages was 21 years; she, unusually, being older than him. He the son of Esme Stewart 1st Duke Lennox and Catherine Balsac Duchess Lennox. They were second cousin once removed.

In 1599 [his daughter] Margaret Erskine Countess Kinghorne was born to John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 37) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 17).

On 7th April 1599 George Gordon 1st Marquess Huntly (age 37) was created 1st Marquess Huntly. [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Stewart Marchioness Huntly (age 26) by marriage Marchioness Huntly.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. On 12th October 1609 [his son-in-law] William Keith 6th Earl Marischal (age 24) and [his daughter] Mary Erskine were married. She the daughter of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 47) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 27). He the son of George Keith 5th Earl Marischal (age 56) and Margaret Home Countess Marischal. They were half fifth cousin once removed.

On 28th December 1614 [his son-in-law] John Leslie 6th Earl Rothes (age 14) and [his daughter] Anne Erskine Countess of Rothes (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess Rothes. She the daughter of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 52) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 32).

On 18th June 1615 [his son] James Erskine Earl Buchan (age 21) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Douglas 6th Countess Buchan (age 14) were married. He by marriage Earl Buchan. She the daughter of James Douglas 5th Earl Buchan. He the son of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 53) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 33). They were second cousin once removed.

On 9th June 1618 [his son-in-law] John Lyon 2nd Earl Kinghorne (age 22) and [his daughter] Margaret Erskine Countess Kinghorne (age 19) were married. She by marriage Countess Kinghorne. She the daughter of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 56) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 36). He the son of Patrick Lyon 1st Earl Kinghorne. They were fourth cousin once removed.

In 1619 [his brother-in-law] Esmé Stewart 3rd Duke Lennox (age 40) was created 1st Earl March. Katherine Clifton Duchess Lennox (age 27) by marriage Countess March.

On 16th June 1621 [his brother-in-law] Ludovic Stewart 2nd Duke Lennox 1st Duke Richmond (age 46) and Frances Howard Duchess Lennox and Richmond (age 42) were married. She by marriage Duchess Lennox. On 16th February 1624 [his brother-in-law] Ludovic Stewart 2nd Duke Lennox 1st Duke Richmond (age 49) died. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map]. Duke Richmond and Earl Newcastle upon Tyne extinct. His brother [his brother-in-law] Esmé (age 45) succeeded 3rd Duke Lennox. Katherine Clifton Duchess Lennox (age 32) by marriage Duchess Lennox.

On 30th July 1624 [his brother-in-law] Esmé Stewart 3rd Duke Lennox (age 45) died. His son James (age 12) succeeded 4th Duke Lennox, 2nd Earl March.

Before 1626 [his son-in-law] Thomas Hamilton 2nd Earl Haddington (age 25) and [his daughter] Catherine Erskine were married. She the daughter of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 63) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 43). He the son of Thomas Hamilton 1st Earl Haddington (age 62).

In or after 1628 [his son] James Erskine Earl Buchan (age 34) and [his daughter-in-law] Dorothy Knyvet were married. He the son of John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 66) and [his wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 46).

On 14th December 1634 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 72) died. His son [his son] John (age 49) succeeded 20th Earl Mar.

In 1644 [his former wife] Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 62) died.
