Paternal Family Tree: Hay of Locherworth
On 5th April 1624 [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 31) and [his mother] Jean Seton (age 18) were married. She by marriage Lord Hay of Yester. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Alexander Seton 1st Earl Dunfermline and [his grandmother] Grizel Leslie Countess Dunfermline. They were third cousins.
Around 13th August 1625 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale was born to John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 32) and Jean Seton (age 19) at Yester.
On 21st August 1625 [his mother] Jean Seton (age 19) died.
On 2nd July 1644 the Battle of Marston Moor was fought near Tockwith [Map] in Yorkshire. Alexander Seton aka Montgomerie 6th Earl Eglinton (age 56) fought for the Royal army. Lionel Carey (age 22) was killed. John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 18) fought for the Parliamentary army.
At the Battle of Marston Moor Lucas (age 31) swept Fairfax's Yorkshire horse before him, but later in the day he was taken prisoner, in a battle won decisively by Parliament.

Before 1645 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 19) and Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale were married. She the daughter of Walter Scott 1st Earl Buccleuch and Mary Hay Countess Buccleuch. He the son of John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 51) and Jean Seton. They were half third cousin once removed.

On 17th August 1648 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 23) for the Royalist army at Walton en le Dale, Preston during the 1648 Battle of Preston.
On 25th May 1653 [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 60) died. His son John (age 27) succeeded 2nd Earl Tweeddale. [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale by marriage Countess Tweeddale.
In 1656 [his son] David Hay was born to John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 30) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale.
In 1660 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 34) was imprisoned for supporting James Guthrie the Scottish Presbyterian minister who was exempted from the general pardon at the restoration of the monarchy and hanged in Edinburgh 01 Jun 1661.
In 1663 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 37) was appointed Lord President of the Scottish Council.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

She the daughter of John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 50) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale. He the son of William Ker 2nd Earl Roxburghe and Jane Ker Countess Roxburgh. They were second cousin once removed.
In 1689 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 63) was appointed Privy Council.
In 1692 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 66) was appointed Lord Chancellor of Scotland.
In 1694 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 68) was created 1st Marquess Teviotdale. [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale by marriage Marchioness Teviotdale.
In 1694 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 68) was appointed Lord High Commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland.
In 1695 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 69) ordered an inquiry into the Glencoe Massacre.
Before 1st August 1696 [his son-in-law] William Douglas 1st Earl March (age 26) and [his daughter] Jean Hay Countess March were married. She the daughter of John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 70) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale. He the son of William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry and Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry. They were fourth cousins.
On 11th August 1697 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 71) died at Edinburgh. His son [his son] John (age 52) succeeded 2nd Marquess Teviotdale, 3rd Earl Tweeddale. [his daughter-in-law] Mary Maitland Marchioness Teviotdale by marriage Marchioness Teviotdale.
