The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 12th January 1494 Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming was born to John Fleming 2nd Lord Fleming (age 29) and Eupheme Drummond.

Before 5th May 1496 [his father] John Fleming 2nd Lord Fleming (age 31) and [his mother] Eupheme Drummond were married.

In 1501 sisters [his aunt] Margaret Drummond (age 26), [his mother] Eupheme Drummond and [his aunt] Sibylla Drummond died from poisoning, food poisoning, at Drummond Castle.

Before 13th February 1509 [his father] John Fleming 2nd Lord Fleming (age 44) and Margaret Stewart were married. She the daughter of Matthew Stewart 2nd Earl Lennox and Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Lennox (age 34). They were fourth cousin once removed. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Around 1518 [his father] John Fleming 2nd Lord Fleming (age 53) and [his step-mother] Agnes Somerville Countess Rothes (age 20) were married. The difference in their ages was 33 years.

Around 1st November 1524 [his father] John Fleming 2nd Lord Fleming (age 59) died. His son Malcolm (age 30) succeeded 3rd Lord Fleming.

On 26th February 1525 Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 31) and Janet Stewart Lady Fleming (age 22) were married. She by marriage Lord Fleming. She the illegitmate daughter of King James IV of Scotland and Isobel Stewart. They were fifth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Battle of Linlithgow Bridge

On 4th September 1526 the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge was fought between supporters of Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland (age 36), the king's mother, commanded by John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox (age 36) and supporters of Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus (age 37) commanded by James Hamilton 1st Earl Arran (age 51), over who would have control over [his brother-in-law] King James V of Scotland (age 14) in his minority.

John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox was killed possibly after surrendering. His son Matthew (age 9) succeeded 4th Earl Lennox.

William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn (age 33) was captured.

In 1529 [his daughter] Margaret Fleming Countess Atholl was born to Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 34) and [his wife] Janet Stewart Lady Fleming (age 26).

In 1529 [his son] John Fleming 5th Lord Fleming was born to Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 34) and [his wife] Janet Stewart Lady Fleming (age 26).

In August 1529 [his illegitimate brother-in-law] James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray (age 30) and Elizabeth Campbell Countess Moray and Sutherland were married. She by marriage Countess Moray. She the daughter of Colin Campbell 3rd Earl Argyll (age 43) and Jean or Janet Gordon Countess Argyll. He the illegitmate son of King James IV of Scotland and Janet Kennedy (age 49). They were half second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

In 1534 [his son] James Fleming 4th Lord Fleming was born to Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 39) and [his wife] Janet Stewart Lady Fleming (age 31).

In 1535 [his brother-in-law] King James V of Scotland (age 22) was appointed 297th Knight of the Garter by King Henry VIII of England and Ireland (age 43).

On 1st January 1537 [his brother-in-law] King James V of Scotland (age 24) and Madeleine Valois (age 16) were married at Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral [Map]. She the daughter of King Francis I of France (age 42) and Claude Valois Orléans Queen Consort France. He the son of King James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland (age 47). They were third cousin once removed. He a grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 17th July 1537 Janet Douglas Lady Glamis (age 39) was burned at the stake at Edinburgh Castle [Map] for conspiring against the [his brother-in-law] king's (age 25) life. Her son, John 7th Lord Glamis Lyon (age 16), was supposedly a witness to the burning.

On 18th June 1538 [his brother-in-law] King James V of Scotland (age 26) and Mary of Guise Queen Consort Scotland (age 22) were married at St Andrew's Cathedral Priory, St Andrew's. She by marriage Queen Consort Scotland. She the daughter of Claude Lorraine 1st Duke Guise (age 41) and Antoinette Bourbon Duchess of Guise (age 45). He the son of King James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland (age 48). They were third cousins. He a grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Battle of Solway Moss

On 25th November 1542 Thomas Wharton 1st Baron Wharton (age 47) commanded the English forces at Battle of Solway Moss at Solway Moss, Cumberland [Map]. John Thynne (age 27) fought. Of the Scottish army Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 48), Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis (age 27) and Laurence Oliphant 3rd Lord Oliphant fought.

William Graham 3rd Earl Menteith (age 42) was captured. He was ransomed in 1453.

William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn (age 49) was captured and committed to the custody of Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 69). He was released on payment of a ransom of a thousand pounds and subscribing by his own hand to support Henry VIII's (age 51) project of a marriage between the young King Edward VI of England and Ireland (age 5) and the Mary Queen of Scots.

Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming was captured.

Death of King James V of Scotland

On 14th December 1542 [his brother-in-law] King James V of Scotland (age 30) died at Falkland Palace [Map]. His daughter Mary succeeded I Queen Scotland. She was six days old.

In 1544 [his illegitimate brother-in-law] James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray (age 45) died.

Before 10th September 1547 [his son-in-law] Robert Graham Master of Montrose and [his daughter] Margaret Fleming Countess Atholl (age 18) were married. He the son of William Graham 2nd Earl Montrose (age 55) and Janet Keith Countess Montrose. They were half second cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Battle of Pinkie Cleugh

On 10th September 1547 an English army commanded by Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset (age 47) defeated a Scottish army commanded by James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran (age 31) and Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus (age 58) at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh at Musselburgh.

The English army included John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland (age 43), Francis Talbot 5th Earl of Shrewsbury (age 47), Miles Partridge and Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 22). John Thynne (age 32) and Edmund Brydges 2nd Baron Chandos (age 25) were knighted.

William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley (age 26) accompanied Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset.

Edward Shelley of Worminghurst Park (age 44) was killed.

John Forbes 6th Lord Forbes (age 82), Christopher Coningsby (age 31) and Edward Clere were killed.

John Thynne was knighted after the battle.

The Scottish army included John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland (age 22) who commanded the Rearguard and Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis (age 32). John Stewart, Robert Douglas (age 41), John Livingston, Thomas Hamilton of Priestfield and Hugh Montgomerie were killed. John Hay 4th Lord Hay was captured but soon released.

Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 53) was killed. His son [his son] James (age 13) succeeded 4th Lord Fleming. [his future daughter-in-law] Barbara Hamilton Lady Fleming by marriage Lord Fleming.

[his son-in-law] Robert Graham Master of Montrose was killed.

Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. This yeare also the Lord Protectors Grace (age 47) went into Scotlande with an armie riall in the beginning of September, and the 20th daie of September [Note. Mistake for 10th September 1547] he had battell with the Scottes within fower miles of Edenboroughe, where, by the power of God, he had the victorie, and there was slaine of the Scottes fiftene thousande, and tow thousand taken prisoners. The Erle of Huntley (age 33), Chauncelor of the Scottes, was one, the Earl of Cassells slaine [Note. Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis (age 32) was captured.], and the Lord Fleeming (age 53). And of Englishemen their were not slaine above an hundred persons in all. The Scottes were numbred above fortie thousande, and the Englishmen not above sixteene thousande; and also they tooke there shipps and all their ordinance, with all the spoile of the fielde, and certeyne castells were yelded to him.

On 1st July 1548 Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming was released at a ransom of 1000 marks.

On 20th February 1562 [his former wife] Janet Stewart Lady Fleming (age 59) died.
