The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin 1599-1663

In 1599 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin was born to Edward Bruce 1st Lord Kinloss (age 51).

On 14th January 1611 [his father] Edward Bruce 1st Lord Kinloss (age 63) died.

On 4th July 1622 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 23) and Anne Chichester (age 17) were married at Holy Trinity Church, Minories [Map].

On 1st January 1624 Henry de Vere 18th Earl of Oxford (age 30) and [his future wife] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 28) were married. She by marriage Countess of Oxford. She the daughter of [his future father-in-law] William Cecil 2nd Earl Exeter (age 58) and [his future mother-in-law] Elizabeth Drury Countess Exeter (age 45). He the son of Edward de Vere 17th Earl of Oxford and Elizabeth Trentham Maid of Honour Countess of Oxford. They were fifth cousin once removed.

Around March 1626 [his son] Robert Bruce 2nd Earl Elgin 1st Earl Ailesbury was born to Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 27) and [his wife] Anne Chichester (age 21).

On 20th March 1627 [his wife] Anne Chichester (age 22) died in childbirth. She was buried in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Exton, Rutlandshire [Map]. In north aisle, a very classical monument for its date, black and white marble table tomb with shrouded effigy.

The inscription: "Anne, Wife to Lord Bruce, Baron of Kinloss (age 28), Daughter of Sir [his father-in-law] Robert Chichester (age 49), Knight of the Bath, of an antient Family in the County of Devon, and of Frances one of the two Daughters and Coheirs of John Lord Harrington, Baron of Exton, sole heir to her Mother. A Lady endowed with a natural disposition to Vertue, a true understanding of honour, most noble behaviour, perpetual cheerfulness, most elegant Conversation, and a more than ordinary conjugal affction. She was married iv. years and ix. months, and one only child named Robert Bruce. Weakened by that birth she died in Childbirth, the xx.day of March, in the xxii. year of her age, Anno Domini M. DC. XXVII. Erected and inscribed to the memory Of his most beloved, and most deserving Wife, by The Lord Bruce."

Anne Chichester: Around 1605 she was born to Robert Chichester and Frances Harrington. On 4th July 1622 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin and she were married at Holy Trinity Church, Minories [Map].

On 12th November 1629 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 30) and Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 33) were married. She the daughter of William Cecil 2nd Earl Exeter (age 63) and Elizabeth Drury Countess Exeter (age 51).

On 21st June 1633 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 34) was created 1st Earl Elgin. [his wife] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 37) by marriage Countess Elgin.

On 30th July 1641 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 42) was created 1st Baron Bruce of Whorlton in Yorkshire.

On 16th February 1645 [his son] Robert Bruce 2nd Earl Elgin 1st Earl Ailesbury (age 18) and [his daughter-in-law] Diana Grey Countess Elgin and Ailesbury (age 15) were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 46) and [his sister-in-law] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 49). He the son of Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 46) and [his former wife] Anne Chichester. They were fifth cousins.

On 26th February 1654 [his wife] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 58) died. She was buried at the Ailesbury Mausoleum, St Mary's Church, Maulden [Map] which her husband Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 55) commissioned.

On 21st December 1663 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 64) died. His son [his son] Robert (age 37) succeeded 2nd Earl Elgin, 2nd Baron Bruce of Whorlton in Yorkshire. [his daughter-in-law] Diana Grey Countess Elgin and Ailesbury (age 33) by marriage Countess Elgin.
