On 25th July 1297 Donald Mar 7th Earl of Mar succeeded 7th Earl Mar.

On 12th August 1332 Domhnhall Mar 9th Earl of Mar died. His sixth cousin once removed Thomas (age 2) succeeded 10th Earl Mar.

After 15th August 1352 Thomas Mar 10th Earl of Mar (age 22) and Margaret Graham 3rd Countess Menteith (age 18) were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. See Dispensation. She the daughter of John Graham Earl Menteith and Margaret Graham 2nd Countess Menteith and Mar. He the son of Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar and Isabella Stewart. They were fourth cousin once removed.

Around 1355 Thomas Mar 10th Earl of Mar (age 25) and Margaret Stewart 3rd Countess Angus and Mar were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. She the daughter of Thomas Stewart 2nd Earl Angus (age 24). He the son of Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar and Isabella Stewart. They were first cousin once removed.

Before 1366 Thomas Erskine 13th Earl of Mar (age 19) and Mary Douglas Countess Mar (age 25) were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. She the daughter of William "Flower of Chivalry and Knight Liddesdale" Douglas 1st Earl Atholl and Elizabeth Maxwell Countess Atholl (age 30).

In 1377 Thomas Mar 10th Earl of Mar (age 47) died. His sister Margaret succeeded 11th Countess Mar.

Battle of Otterburn

On either 5th August 1388 or 19th August 1388 a Scottish army commanded by John Swinton defeated an English army commanded by Henry "Hotspur" Percy (age 24) during the Battle of Otterburn at Otterburn [Map]. Henry "Hotspur" Percy and his brother Ralph Percy (age 29) were captured as was Matthew Redman (age 60). The English suffered 1000 killed, 2000 captured. The Scottish 100 killed, 200 captured.

On the Scottish side James Douglas 2nd Earl Douglas (age 30) was killed. His sister Isabel (age 28) succeeded Countess Mar.

John Dunbar 1st Earl of Moray (age 46) fought.

In 1404 Thomas Erskine 13th Earl of Mar (age 58) died at Erskine. His grandson Thomas de jure 14th Earl Mar.

In 1404 Alexander Stewart 1st Earl of Mar (age 29) and Isabel Douglas Countess Mar (age 44) were married. He by marriage Earl Mar. She the daughter of William Douglas 1st Earl Douglas and Margaret Mar Countess Douglas 11th Countess Mar. He the son of Alexander "The Wolf of Badenoch" Stewart 3rd Earl Buchan (age 61) and Mariota Mackay Countess Moray. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England.

In 1408 Isabel Douglas Countess Mar (age 48) died. Earl Mar extinct.

In 1453 Robert Erskine died. Thomas Erskine 13th Earl of Mar de jure 13th Earl Mar.

Around 1458 John Stewart 1st Earl of Mar (age 2) was created 1st Earl Mar.

On 2nd March 1486 John Stewart 1st Earl of Mar (age 6) was created 1st Earl Mar.

In 1513 John Erskine 17th Earl of Mar (age 25) succeeded 17th Earl Mar, 5th Lord Erskine.

Battle of Flodden

On 9th September 1513 at the Battle of Flodden was fought at the Branxton, Northumberland [Map]. the English army was commanded by Thomas Howard 2nd Duke of Norfolk (age 70), Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 40), Edmund Howard (age 35), Thomas Dacre 2nd Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 45), Edward Stanley 1st Baron Monteagle (age 51) and Marmaduke Constable (age 56).

The English army included: Henry "Shepherd Lord" Clifford 10th Baron Clifford (age 59), William Conyers 1st Baron Conyers (age 44), Thomas Berkeley 5th Baron Berkeley (age 41) and Richard Neville 2nd Baron Latimer of Snape (age 45).

Father and son Ralph ellerker of risby in yorkshire and Ralph Ellerker were knighted by Thomas Howard Earl of Surrey, as were Marmaduke Constable (age 33), William Constable (age 38), George Darcy 1st Baron Darcy Aston (age 16), Edmund Walsingham (age 33), Thomas Burgh 7th Baron Cobham 5th Baron Strabolgi 1st Baron Burgh (age 25) and Walter Stonor (age 36).

John Booth (age 78), Randall Babington, John Bigod (age 38) and Thomas Fitzwilliam (age 39), Christopher Savage (age 49), Thomas Venables (age 44) and Brian Tunstall (age 33) were killed.

Bryan Stapleton of Wighill (age 55) was killed. (Some reports have him dying in 1518).

The Scottish army suffered heavy casualties:

King James IV of Scotland (age 40) was killed. His body ws taken to London, then to Sheen Priory, Richmond [Map]; thereafter it disappeared. His son James (age 1) succeeded V King Scotland.

Archbishop Alexander Stewart (age 20) was killed.

David Kennedy 1st Earl Cassilis (age 43) was killed. His son Gilbert (age 18) succeeded 2nd Earl Cassilis. Isabel Campbell Countess Cassilis by marriage Countess Cassilis.

William Sinclair 2nd Earl Caithness (age 54) was killed. His son John succeeded 3rd Earl Caithness.

Matthew Stewart 2nd Earl Lennox was killed. His son John (age 23) succeeded 3rd Earl Lennox.

William Hay 4th Earl Erroll was killed. His son William (age 18) succeeded 5th Earl Erroll.

John Douglas 2nd Earl Morton was killed. His son James succeeded 3rd Earl Morton, 6th Lord Dalkeith.

Adam Hepburn 2nd Earl Bothwell was killed. His son Patrick (age 1) succeeded 3rd Earl Bothwell.

Alexander Stewart 4th of Garlies (age 32) was killed. His son Alexander (age 6) succeeded 5th Lord Garlies.

Alexander Elphinstone 1st Lord Elphinstone was killed. His son Alexander (age 3) succeeded 2nd Lord Elphinstone.

George Seton 5th Lord Seton was killed. His son George succeeded 6th Lord Seton.

John Hay 2nd Lord Hay of Yester was killed. His son John (age 23) succeeded 3rd Lord Hay of Yester. Elizabeth Douglas Lady Hay by marriage Lord Hay of Yester.

Henry Sinclair 3rd Lord Sinclair (age 48) was killed. His son William succeeded 4th Lord Sinclair.

James Stewart 1st Lord of Traquair (age 33) was killed. His son William (age 7) succeeded 2nd Lord Traquair.

John Maxwell 4th Lord Maxwell (age 57) was killed. His son Robert (age 20) succeeded 5th Lord Maxwell.

George Home 4th Lord Home and John Stewart 2nd Earl Atholl (age 38) fought.

William Graham 1st Earl Montrose (age 49) was killed. His son William (age 21) succeeded 2nd Earl Montrose.

Thomas Stewart 2nd Lord Innermeath (age 52) was killed. His son Richard succeeded 3rd Lord Innermeath.

William Murray (age 43), Colin Oliphant (age 26), William Ruthven (age 33), George Douglas (age 44) and William Douglas (age 42) were killed. Walter Lindsay of Arden and Walter Lindsay (age 33) were killed.

Before 1528 John Erskine 17th Earl of Mar (age 40) and Margaret Campbell Countess Mar were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. She the daughter of Archibald Campbell 2nd Earl Argyll and Elizabeth Stewart Countess Argyll (age 64). They were fifth cousins.

On 11th November 1555 John Erskine 17th Earl of Mar (age 68) died. His son John succeeded 18th Earl Mar, 6th Lord Erskine.

On 28th October 1572 John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar died at Stirling [Map]. On 28th October 1572 His son John (age 10) succeeded 19th Earl Mar. Anne Drummond Countess Mar (age 17) by marriage Countess Mar.

In December 1592 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 30) and Mary Stewart Countess Mar (age 10) were married. She by marriage Countess Mar. The difference in their ages was 20 years. She the daughter of Esme Stewart 1st Duke Lennox and Catherine Balsac Duchess Lennox. He the son of John Erskine 18th Earl of Mar. They were third cousin once removed.

On 14th December 1634 John Erskine 19th Earl of Mar (age 72) died. His son John (age 49) succeeded 20th Earl Mar.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
