Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 20th August 1484 [his mother] Ippolita Maria Sforza (age 38) died.
In February 1489 [his brother-in-law] Gian Galeazzo Sforza 6th Duke Milan (age 19) and [his sister] Isabella Trastámara Duchess Milan (age 18) were married. She by marriage Duchess Milan. She the daughter of [his father] Alfonso II King Naples (age 40) and [his mother] Ippolita Maria Sforza. He the son of [his uncle] Galeazzo Maria Sforza 5th Duke Milan and Bona of Savoy (age 39). They were first cousins.
In 1493 [his father] Alfonso II King Naples (age 44) was appointed 242nd Knight of the Garter by King Henry VII of England and Ireland (age 35).
On 25th January 1494 [his grandfather] Ferdinand I King Naples (age 70) died. His son [his father] Alfonso (age 45) succeeded II King Naples.
On 18th December 1495 [his father] Alfonso II King Naples (age 47) died. His son Ferdinand (age 26) succeeded II King Naples. [his aunt] Joanna Trastámara Queen Consort Naples (age 16) by marriage Queen Consort Naples.
In 1496 Ferdinand II (age 26) and Joanna Trastámara Queen Consort Naples (age 16) were married. She the daughter of Ferdinand I King Naples and Joanna of Aragon Queen Consort Naples (age 42). He the son of Alfonso II King Naples and Ippolita Maria Sforza. They were aunt and nephew.
In October 1496 Ferdinand II (age 27) died. His uncle [his uncle] Frederick (age 44) succeeded IV King Naples.
On 27th August 1518 [his aunt] Joanna Trastámara Queen Consort Naples (age 39) died.
