All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 19th October 1526 [her husband] William Willoughby 11th Baron Willoughby (age 44) died at Parham, Suffolk [Map]. He was buried at All Saints Church, Mettingham Bungay [Map]. His daughter [her daughter] Catherine (age 7) succeeded 12th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby. Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk became a ward of Henry VIII (age 35).

Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic Henry VIII 1533. 3 Sept [1533]. On Sunday next the [her future son-in-law] duke of Suffolk (age 49) will be married to the daughter [[her daughter] Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk (age 14)] of a Spanish lady [Maria de Salinas Baroness Willoughby (age 43)] named lady Willoughby. She was promised to his son, but he is only ten years old; and although it is not worth writing to your Majesty the novelty of the case made me mention it.

The Duke will have done a service to the ladies who can point to his example when they are reproached, as is usual, with marrying again immediately after the death of their husbands.

The King has given him, in compensation, I think, for the expence he had in the burial of his late wife [Mary Tudor, younger sister of King Henry VIII], the fruits of a vacant bishopric1, which will amount to more than 12,000 ducats. Thanks the Emperor for promising to remember him in the distribution of benefices. London, 3 Sept. 1533.

Fr., hol., pp. 5, from a modern copy.

Note 1. This must be Ely.

On 7th September 1533 [her son-in-law] Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 49) and [her daughter] Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk (age 14) were married. She by marriage Duchess Suffolk. He held her wardship and had intended to marry her to his ten years old son. In the event of the death of his wife, Mary Tudor Queen Consort France, ten weeks earlier he decided to marry her himself instead. The difference in their ages was 35 years. They were fifth cousin once removed.

Death of Catherine of Aragon

On 7th January 1536 Catherine of Aragon (age 50) died at Kimbolton Castle [Map] in the arms of her great friend Maria de Salinas Baroness Willoughby (age 46).

In 1539 Maria de Salinas Baroness Willoughby (age 49) died.
