The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

He the son of [her grandfather] Ferdinand II King Leon and [her grandmother] Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon (age 43). They were first cousins.

In 1197 [her father] Alfonso IX King Leon (age 25) and [her step-mother] Berengaria Ivrea I Queen Castile (age 18) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of Alfonso VIII King Castile (age 41) and Eleanor Plantagenet Queen Consort Castile (age 35). He the son of [her grandfather] Ferdinand II King Leon and [her grandmother] Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon (age 49). They were first cousin once removed. She a granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 5th October 1214 Alfonso VIII King Castile (age 58) died. He was buried at Abbey of Santa Maria la Real de Huelgas [Map]. His son [her future husband] Henry (age 10) succeeded I King Castile.

In 1215 [her future husband] Henry I King Castile (age 10) and [her aunt] Mafalda Burgundy Queen Consort Castile (age 19) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile. On 6th June 1217 [her husband] Henry I King Castile (age 13) was killed by a tile falling of a roof. He was buried at Abbey of Santa Maria la Real de Huelgas [Map]. His sister [her step-mother] Berengaria (age 38) succeeded I Queen Castile.

On 31st August 1217 [her step-mother] Berengaria Ivrea I Queen Castile (age 38) abdicated I King Castile. Her son [her half-brother] Ferdinand (age 18) succeeded III King Castile.

On 30th November 1219 [her half-brother] Ferdinand III King Castile III King Leon (age 20) and [her sister-in-law] Elisabeth Hohenstaufen Queen Consort Castile Queen Consort Leon (age 14) were married in Burgos [Map]. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile, Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of Philip King Germany. He the son of [her father] Alfonso IX King Leon (age 48) and [her step-mother] Berengaria Ivrea I Queen Castile (age 40). They were fourth cousins. He a great grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 24th September 1230 [her father] Alfonso IX King Leon (age 59) died. His son [her half-brother] Ferdinand (age 31) succeeded III King Leon.

In October 1237 [her half-brother] Ferdinand III King Castile III King Leon (age 38) and [her sister-in-law] Joan Dammartin Queen Consort Castile and Leon (age 17) were married in Burgos [Map]. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile, Queen Consort Leon. The difference in their ages was 21 years. She the daughter of Simon Dammartin (age 57) and Marie Montgomery Countess Ponthieu (age 38). He the son of [her father] Alfonso IX King Leon and [her step-mother] Berengaria Ivrea I Queen Castile (age 58). They were second cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474.
