Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map]. 19th-century parish church near the Menai Strait, in Anglesey, north Wales. The first church was founded here by St. Edwen (daughter of Edwin of Northumbria, king and saint) in 640, but the present structure dates from 1856 and was designed by Henry Kennedy, the architect of the Diocese of Bangor.

On 27th May 1893 Jane Gordon [age 82] died. She was buried at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map].

On 13th October 1898 Henry Paget 4th Marquess Anglesey [age 62] died. He was buried at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map]. His son Henry [age 23] succeeded 5th Marquess Anglesey, 6th Earl Uxbridge, 14th Baron Paget Beaudasert, 8th Baronet Bayly of Plas Newydd in Anglesey. Lilian Florence Chetwynd Marchioness of Anglesey [age 22] by marriage Marchioness Anglesey.

On 2nd February 1907 Colonel Charles Hughes-Hunter 1st Baronet [age 62] died. He was buried at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map]. His son William [age 27] succeeded 2nd Baronet Hunter of Plâs Côch in Anglesey.

Colonel Charles Hughes-Hunter 1st Baronet: In July 1844 he was born to James Hunter and Jane Gordon. Before 1880 he and Sarah Elizabeth Hughes were married.

William Bulkeley Hughes Hughes-Hunter 2nd Baronet: In 1880 he was born to Colonel Charles Hughes-Hunter 1st Baronet and Sarah Elizabeth Hughes. In 1951 he died. Baronet Hunter of Plâs Côch in Anglesey extinct.

On 3rd November 1946 Victoria Marjorie Harriet Manners Marchioness Anglesey [age 62] died. She was buried at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map].

On 28th March 1996 Mary Patricia Beatrice Rose Paget [age 78] died. She was buried at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen [Map].

Mary Patricia Beatrice Rose Paget: On 19th January 1918 she was born to Charles Henry Alexander Paget 6th Marquess Anglesey and Victoria Marjorie Harriet Manners Marchioness Anglesey.
