Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 12th July 1673 William Strickland 1st Baronet [aged 77] died. His son Thomas [aged 34] succeeded 2nd Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 20th October 1684 Thomas Strickland 2nd Baronet [aged 45] died. His son William [aged 19] succeeded 3rd Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 12th May 1724 William Strickland 3rd Baronet [aged 59] died from a fall from a horse during a fox hunt. His son William [aged 38] succeeded 4th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire. Catherine Sambrooke Lady Strickland [aged 18] by marriage Lady Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 1st September 1735 William Strickland 4th Baronet [aged 49] died. His son George [aged 6] succeeded 5th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 13th January 1808 George Strickland 5th Baronet [aged 78] died. His son William [aged 54] succeeded 6th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire. Henrietta Cholmley Lady Strickland [aged 47] by marriage Lady Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 8th January 1834 William Strickland 6th Baronet [aged 80] died. His son George [aged 51] succeeded 7th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 23rd January 1874 George Strickland 7th Baronet [aged 91] died. His son Charles [aged 54] succeeded 8th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire. Esther Ann Strickland inherited Whitby Manor

On 31st December 1909 Charles Strickland 8th Baronet [aged 90] died. His son Walter [aged 58] de jure 9th Baronet Strickland of Boynton in Yorkshire. He never formally used the title he inherited upon his father's death.

On 9th August 1938 Walter Strickland 9th Baronet [aged 87] died. His first cousin once removed Henry [aged 37] succeeded 10th Baronet Strickland-Constable of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 27th March 1975 Henry Marmaduke Strickland-Constable 10th Baronet [aged 74] died. His brother Robert [aged 71] succeeded 11th Baronet Strickland-Constable of Boynton in Yorkshire.

On 11th December 1994 Robert Frederick-Strickland-Constable 11th Baronet [aged 91] died. His son Frederic [aged 50] succeeded 12th Baronet Strickland-Constable of Boynton in Yorkshire.
