Biography of Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy 1301-1352

Paternal Family Tree: Reginar aka Percy

In 1293 [his father] Henry Percy 9th and 1st Baron Percy (age 19) and [his mother] Eleanor Fitzalan Baroness Percy (age 9) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Richard Fitzalan 1st or 8th Earl of Arundel (age 25) and [his grandmother] Alice Saluzzo Countess Arundel. They were third cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John of England.

On 6th February 1301 Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy was born to [his father] Henry Percy 9th and 1st Baron Percy (age 27) and [his mother] Eleanor Fitzalan Baroness Percy (age 17).

In 1314 [his father] Henry Percy 9th and 1st Baron Percy (age 40) died. He was buried at Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire [Map]. His son Henry (age 12) succeeded 2nd Baron Percy of Alnwick, 10th Baron Percy of Topcliffe.

In or before 1321 Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 19) and Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy (age 17) were married. She by marriage Baroness Percy of Alnwick, Baroness Percy of Topcliffe. They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

In 1321 [his son] Henry Percy 11th and 3rd Baron Percy was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 19) and [his wife] Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy (age 18). He married (1) his half third cousin once removed before 10th November 1341 Mary Plantagenet Baroness Percy, daughter of Henry Plantagenet 3rd Earl of Leicester 3rd Earl Lancaster and Maud Chaworth, and had issue (2) after 1362 Joan Orreby Baroness Percy and had issue.

Around August 1328 [his mother] Eleanor Fitzalan Baroness Percy (age 44) died. Monument in Beverley Minster [Map].

Eleanor Fitzalan Baroness Percy: Around 1284 she was born to Richard Fitzalan 1st or 8th Earl of Arundel and Alice Saluzzo Countess Arundel. In 1293 Henry Percy 9th and 1st Baron Percy and she were married. She the daughter of Richard Fitzalan 1st or 8th Earl of Arundel and Alice Saluzzo Countess Arundel. They were third cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John of England.

In 1330 [his daughter] Margaret Percy Baroness Ferrers Groby was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 28) and [his wife] Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy (age 27). She married (1) her half fourth cousin after 20th January 1340 Robert Umfraville, son of Gilbert Umfraville 9th Earl Angus and Joan Willoughby Countess Angus (2) her third cousin before 25th May 1368 William Ferrers 3rd Baron Ferrers of Groby, son of Henry Ferrers 2nd Baron Ferrers of Groby and Isabel Verdun Baroness Ferrers Groby, and had issue.

In 1332 after the death of John Clavering (age 66), the last of the male line of Roger Fitzrichard 1st Baron Warkworth, and the death of his wife Hawise Tiptoft (age 62) in 1345, Warkworth Castle, Northumberland [Map] passed to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 30).

In 1336 [his daughter] Eleanor Percy Baroness Fitzwalter was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 34) and [his wife] Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy (age 33). She married her third cousin twice removed in or before 1345 John Fitzwalter 3rd Baron Fitzwalter, son of Robert Fitzwalter 2nd Baron Fitzwalter and Joan de Multon Baroness Fitzwalter, and had issue.

After 20th January 1340 [his son-in-law] Robert Umfraville and [his daughter] Margaret Percy Baroness Ferrers Groby (age 10) were married. He the son of Gilbert Umfraville 9th Earl Angus (age 30) and Joan Willoughby Countess Angus. They were half fourth cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Before 10th November 1341 [his son] Henry Percy 11th and 3rd Baron Percy (age 20) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Plantagenet Baroness Percy (age 21) were married. She by marriage Baroness Percy of Alnwick. She the daughter of Henry Plantagenet 3rd Earl of Leicester 3rd Earl Lancaster (age 60) and Maud Chaworth. They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Battle of Neville's Cross

On 17th October 1346 at the Battle of Neville's Cross at Neville's Cross, Durham [Map] the English inflicted a heavy defeat on the Scottish army that had invaded England in compliance with their treaty with the French for mutual support against England.

The English army included: William Deincourt 2nd Baron Deincourt (age 45), Henry Scrope 1st Baron Scrope of Masham (age 34), Ralph Hastings (age 55), Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 55), Archbishop William Zouche, Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 45) and John Mowbray 3rd Baron Mowbray (age 35).

Of the Scottish army King David II of Scotland (age 22), John Graham Earl Menteith (age 56) and William "Flower of Chivalry and Knight Liddesdale" Douglas 1st Earl Atholl (age 46) were captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map].

Neil Bruce, John Randolph 3rd Earl of Moray (age 40), David Hay 6th Baron Erroll (age 28) and Edward Keith of Sinton (age 66) were killed.

On 26th February 1352 Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 51) died. His son Henry (age 31) succeeded 3rd Baron Percy of Alnwick, 11th Baron Percy of Topcliffe.

On 24th August 1365 [his former wife] Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy (age 62) died at Alnwick, Northumberland [Map].

[his daughter] Isabel Percy Baroness Aton was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy and Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy. She married before 1388 William Aton 2nd Baron Aton, son of Gilbert Aton 1st Baron Aton.

[his son] Roger Percy was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy and Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy.

[his son] Bishop Thomas Percy was born to Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy and Idonia Clifford Baroness Percy.
