John Duke of Bedford marries Jacquetta Luxemburg

On 22nd April 1433 John Duke Bedford (age 43) and [his mother] Jacquetta Luxemburg (age 18) were married at Thérouanne [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Bedford. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Peter Luxemburg I Count Saint Pol (age 43) and [his grandmother] Margherita Baux (age 39). He the son of King Henry IV of England and Mary Bohun. They were half fifth cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

The marriage caused a rift with Philip "Good" Duke Burgundy (age 36), John's late wife's brother, who regarded the marriage, some five months after his sister's death, an insult to her memory. There was no issue from the marriage with John dying a year and a half later.

Murder of Lord Scales

On 20th July 1460 Thomas Scales 7th Baron Scales (age 63) was murdered by boatmen whilst travelling from the Tower of London [Map] to Sanctuary, Westminster Abbey [Map]. His daughter [his future sister-in-law] Elizabeth succeeded 8th Baroness Scales. She was, or had been married to, Henry Bourchier (the year of his death may been 1458). She was in 1466 married to [his brother] Anthony Woodville 2nd Earl Rivers (age 20), brother of [his future brother-in-law] King Edward IV's (age 18) wife [his sister] Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 23); an example of the Woodville family marrying rich heiresses.

Marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville

On 1st May 1464 [his brother-in-law] King Edward IV of England (age 22) and [his sister] Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 27) were married at Grafton Regis, Northamptonshire [Map]. [his mother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford (age 49), Elizabeth's mother, being the only witness. The date not certain. She the daughter of [his father] Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers (age 59) and Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford. He the son of Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke of York and Cecily "Rose of Raby" Neville Duchess York (age 48). They were sixth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

After 1st May 1464 [his brother] Anthony Woodville 2nd Earl Rivers (age 24) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Scales Countess Rivers were married. He by marriage Baron Scales. The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 27th July 1469 William Herbert 1st Earl Pembroke (age 46) was executed following his capture at the Battle of Edgecote Moor. His son [his brother-in-law] William (age 18) succeeded 2nd Earl Pembroke, 2nd Baron Herbert of Raglan. [his sister] Mary Woodville Countess Pembroke and Huntingdon (age 13) by marriage Countess Pembroke.

Execution of the Woodvilles

On 12th August 1469 Woodvilles father and son were beheaded at Kenilworth Castle [Map] by supporters of Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury (age 40).

Death of Jacquetta of Luxembourg

On 30th May 1472 [his mother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford (age 57) died. Not known where she was buried.

In November 1478 [his brother] Bishop Lionel Woodville (age 31) was appointed Dean of Exeter which he held until 1482.

Before October 1480 [his brother] Anthony Woodville 2nd Earl Rivers (age 40) and [his sister-in-law] Mary Fitzlewis Countess Rivers (age 15) were married. She by marriage Countess Rivers. The difference in their ages was 25 years. He the son of [his father] Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers and [his mother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford.

Around 1481 [his sister] Mary Woodville Countess Pembroke and Huntingdon (age 25) died.

On 21st April 1482 [his brother] Bishop Lionel Woodville (age 35) was consecrated as Bishop of Salisbury.

Death of King Edward IV

On 9th April 1483 [his brother-in-law] King Edward IV of England (age 40) died at Westminster [Map]. His son [his nephew] Edward (age 12) succeeded V King of England. Those present included [his sister] Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 46), William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 52) and [his nephew] Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset (age 28).

Funeral of Edward IV

On 17th April 1483 the coffin of [his former brother-in-law] Edward IV (deceased) was carried to Westminster Abbey [Map] by Edward Stanley 1st Baron Monteagle (age 21), John Savage (age 39), Thomas Wortley (age 50), Thomas Molyneux (age 38), probably John Welles 1st Viscount Welles (age 33) who had married Edward's daughter Cecily), John Cheney 1st Baron Cheyne (age 41), Walter Hungerford (age 19), Guy Wolston (age 50), John Sapcote (age 35), Thomas Tyrrell (age 30), John Risley, Thomas Dacre 2nd Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 15), John Norreys, Louis de Bretelles and John Comyn 4th Lord Baddenoch.

Execution of William Hastings by Richard III

On 13th June 1483 Richard, Duke of Gloucester (age 30), [future King Richard III] held a Council meeting at the Tower of London [Map] attended by William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 52), Cardinal John Morton (age 63), Archbishop Thomas Rotherham (age 59) and [his brother-in-law] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham (age 28). During the course of the meeting Richard accused William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings, Cardinal John Morton and Archbishop Thomas Rotherham of treasonable conspiracy with the [his sister] Queen (age 46).

William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings was summarily beheaded at Tower Green, Tower of London [Map]. He was buried in North Aisle St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle [Map] next to [his former brother-in-law] King Edward IV of England. His son Edward (age 16) succeeded 2nd Baron Hastings.

Cardinal John Morton and Archbishop Thomas Rotherham were arrested.

Execution of the Yorkists and their Affinity

On 25th June 1483 supporters of the Woodvilles were executed at Pontefract Castle [Map]..

[his nephew] Richard Grey (age 26) and Thomas Vaughan (age 73) were beheaded.

Buckingham's Rebellion

In October 1483 Buckingham's Rebellion was an attempt to replace King Richard III of England (age 30) with Henry Tudor (age 26). Richard Haute took part. He escaped execution, and was subsequently pardoned. Richard Woodville 3rd Earl Rivers (age 30) was attainted.

Around 23rd June 1484 [his brother] Bishop Lionel Woodville (age 37) died.

In March 1485 Richard Woodville 3rd Earl Rivers (age 32) was pardoned in exchange for a bond of 1,000 marks and a pledge of good behavior.

Coronation of Henry VII

On 28th October 1485 [his future brother-in-law] Jasper Tudor 1st Duke Bedford (age 53) was created 1st Duke Bedford by Henry VII (age 28) for having supported Henry's claim to the throne. [his sister] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 27) by marriage Duchess Bedford.

Thomas Stanley 1st Earl of Derby (age 50) was created 1st Earl Derby.

Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 26) was created 1st Earl Devon. It is believed he was restored as 11th Baron Okehampton at the same time?

She by marriage Countess Pembroke. The difference in their ages was 26 years. On 24th September 1486 Prince Arthur Tudor was christened at Winchester Cathedral [Map] by Bishop John Alcock (age 56).

His grandmother Margaret Beaufort Countess Richmond (age 43) has written the Ordinances as to what Preparation is to be made for the Christening of the Child of which she shall be delivered that describe the form of the Christening.

25 November 1487-Coronation of Elizabeth of York

On 25th November 1487 [his niece] Elizabeth of York (age 21) was crowned Queen Consort England at Westminster Abbey [Map].

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
