Biography of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute 1713-1792

In February 1711 [his father] James Stuart 2nd Earl Bute (age 15) and [his mother] Anne Campbell Countess Bute (age 25) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Archibald Campbell 1st Duke Argyll and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Tollemache Duchess Argyll (age 51). He the son of [his grandfather] James Stuart 1st Earl Bute.

On 25th May 1713 John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute was born to [his father] James Stuart 2nd Earl Bute (age 17) and [his mother] Anne Campbell Countess Bute (age 27) at Parliament Close.

On 28th January 1723 [his father] James Stuart 2nd Earl Bute (age 27) died. His son John (age 9) succeeded 3rd Earl Bute. [his future wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 4) by marriage Countess Bute.

Around 20th August 1736 John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 23) and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 18) were married. He the son of James Stuart 2nd Earl Bute and Anne Campbell Countess Bute (age 50). They were fifth cousins.

On 20th October 1736 [his mother] Anne Campbell Countess Bute (age 50) died.

Around 1741 [his daughter] Mary Stuart Countess Lonsdale was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 27) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 22). She married 7th September 1761 James Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale.

On 30th June 1744 [his son] John Stuart 1st Marquis of the Isle of Bute was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 31) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 26) at Mount Stuart House. He married (1) his half fifth cousin once removed 12th November 1766 Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute, daughter of Herbert Windsor 2nd Viscount Windsor and Alice Clavering Viscountess Windsor, and had issue (2) 28th January 1800 Frances Coutts Marchioness Bute and had issue.

In 1745 [his daughter] Anne Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 31) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 26). She married (1) her fourth cousin once removed 2nd July 1764 Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland, son of Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland and Elizabeth Seymour Duchess Northumberland.

On 19th September 1747 [his son] James Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 34) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 29). He married 8th June 1767 Margaret Cunynghame and had issue.

Around 1748 [his daughter] Jane Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 34) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 29).

In 1751 [his son] Frederick Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 37) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 32).

In January 1753 [his son] Charles Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 39) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 34). He married his fifth cousin 19th April 1778 Anne Louisa Bertie and had issue.

In March 1755 [his son] William Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 41) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 37).

On 12th August 1757 [his daughter] Louisa Stuart was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 44) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 39).

On 7th September 1761 [his son-in-law] James Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale (age 25) and [his daughter] Mary Stuart Countess Lonsdale (age 20) were married. She the daughter of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 48) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 43).

In 1762 John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 48) was appointed 581st Knight of the Garter by King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 23).

Before 1763 [his daughter] Caroline Stuart Countess Portarlington was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 49) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 44). She married before 1781 John Dawson 1st Earl Portarlington and had issue.

Louisa Stuart: On 12th August 1757 she was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute. On 4th August 1851 Louisa Stuart died.

Anne Stuart: In 1745 she was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute. On 2nd July 1764 Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland and she were married. She the daughter of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute. He the son of Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland and Elizabeth Seymour Duchess Northumberland. They were fourth cousin once removed. Before 23rd May 1779 Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland and Anne Stuart were divorced.

Caroline Stuart Countess Portarlington: Before 1763 she was born to John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute. Before 1781 John Dawson 1st Earl Portarlington and she were married. She the daughter of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute. In 1785 John Dawson 1st Earl Portarlington was created 1st Earl Portarlington. She by marriage Countess Portarlington. On 20th January 1813 Caroline Stuart Countess Portarlington died.

On 2nd July 1764 [his son-in-law] Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland (age 21) and [his daughter] Anne Stuart (age 19) were married. She the daughter of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 51) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 46). He the son of Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland (age 48) and Elizabeth Seymour Duchess Northumberland (age 47). They were fourth cousin once removed.

Before 23rd May 1779 [his son-in-law] Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland (age 36) and [his daughter] Anne Stuart (age 34) were divorced.

Before 1781 [his son-in-law] John Dawson 1st Earl Portarlington (age 36) and [his daughter] Caroline Stuart Countess Portarlington (age 18) were married. She the daughter of John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 67) and [his wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 62).

On 10th March 1792 John Stuart 3rd Earl Bute (age 78) died. His son John (age 47) succeeded 4th Earl Bute. [his daughter-in-law] Charlotte Jane Windsor Marchioness Bute (age 46) by marriage Countess Bute.

On 6th November 1794 [his former wife] Mary Wortley-Montagu Countess Bute (age 76) died.
