Biography of Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury 1703-1771

On 16th May 1689 [his father] Charles Knollys 4th Earl Banbury (age 26) and Elizabeth Lister Countess of Banbury (age 25) were married. She by marriage Countess Banbury. Said to be at the Nag's Head Coffee-House James Street although this may have been the location of the reception. He the son of [his grandfather] Nicholas Knollys 3rd Earl Banbury and [his grandmother] Anne or Abigail Sherard.

On 30th April 1702 [his father] Charles Knollys 4th Earl Banbury (age 39) and [his mother] Mary Woods (age 18) were married at St Bride's Church, Fleet Street. The difference in their ages was 21 years. He the son of [his grandfather] Nicholas Knollys 3rd Earl Banbury and [his grandmother] Anne or Abigail Sherard.

On 26th March 1703 Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury was born to Charles Knollys 4th Earl Banbury (age 40) and Mary Woods (age 19). He was baptised on 14th April 1703 at St James' Church, Piccadilly.

On 9th May 1722 Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 19) matriculated Christ Church College, Oxford University.

In 1725 Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 21) graduated with a Master of Arts degree.

On 21st October 1726 [his son] William Knollys 6th Earl Banbury was born to Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 23) and [his wife] Martha Hughes (age 22).

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1750 Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 46) was appointed Vicar at St John the Baptist Church, Burford which office he held for life.

On 30th March 1761 [his son] Thomas Woods Knollys 7th Earl Banbury (age 33) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Porter (age 18) were married at St Thomas Church, Winchester. He the son of Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 58) and [his wife] Martha Hughes (age 57).

On 12th May 1762 [his mother] Mary Woods (age 78) died.

On 13th March 1771 Charles Knollys 5th Earl Banbury (age 67) died. He was buried on 19th March 1771 at St John the Baptist Church, Burford. His son [his son] William (age 44) de jure 6th Earl Banbury, 6th Viscount Wallingford, 6th Baron Knollys.

Around September 1771 [his former wife] Martha Hughes (age 67) died.
