All About History Books

The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster was appointed Knight of the Bath.

On 7th October 1388 [his father] Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 3rd Earl of Ulster (age 14) and [his mother] Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess March, Countess of Ulster. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Holland 2nd Earl Kent (age 38) and [his grandmother] Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (age 38). He the son of [his grandfather] Edmund Mortimer 3rd Earl March, Earl of Ulster and [his grandmother] Philippa Plantagenet Countess March 2nd Countess Ulster. They were second cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

On 6th November 1391 Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster was born to Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 3rd Earl of Ulster (age 17) and Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 21) at County Westmeath. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 20th July 1398 [his father] Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 3rd Earl of Ulster (age 24) died at Kells, County Meath. He was buried at Wigmore Abbey [Map]. His son Edmund (age 6) succeeded Heir to the Throne of England, 5th Earl March, 4th Earl of Ulster, 7th Baron Mortimer of Wigmore.

Before 19th June 1399 [his step-father] Edward Charleton 5th Baron Cherleton (age 29) and [his mother] Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 28) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Holland 2nd Earl Kent and [his grandmother] Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (age 49). They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

Abdication of Richard II

On 30th September 1399 King Henry IV of England (age 32) became King of England usurping the throne of his cousin Richard II (age 32) and Richard's heir, the seven year old Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl of March (age 7) who was descended from Edward III's second son Lionel of Antwerp Duke of Clarence. This second usurption was to have far reaching consequences since it subsequently became the descent by which the House of York claimed precedence over the House of Lancaster being one of the causes of the Wars of the Roses.

Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland (age 35) was appointed Earl Marshal.

Death of Richard II

On 14th February 1400 (exact date not known) King Richard II (age 33) died at Pontefract Castle [Map] where he had been imprisoned three months before; possibly murdered, possibly starved to death. His death was a consequence of the Epiphany Rising; he was still considered a threat.

Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster (age 8) de jure Heir to the Throne of England since he was descended from [his grandmother] Philippa Plantagenet Countess March 2nd Countess Ulster the daughter of Lionel of Antwerp 1st Duke of Clarence. The new King Henry IV (age 32) ignored his claim. Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster and his brother [his brother] Roger Mortimer (age 6) were imprisoned in Windsor and Berkhamstead castles respectively; they were treated well.

On 17th February 1400 Richard's corpse was displayed at St Paul's Cathedral [Map].

On 6th March 1400 Richard's remains were buried at King's Langley Priory, Hertfordshire [Map].

In October 1405 [his mother] Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 34) died.

In 1415 Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster (age 23) and Anne Stafford Duchess Exeter were married. She by marriage Countess March, Countess of Ulster. She the daughter of Edmund Stafford 5th Earl Stafford and Anne of Gloucester Plantagenet Countess Eu and Stafford (age 32). He the son of Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 3rd Earl of Ulster and Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Southampton Plot

On 31st July 1415, when King Henry V of England (age 28) was in Portchester Castle, Hampshire [Map] preparing to invade France, Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster (age 23) revealed the Southampton Plot to him. Henry Scrope 3rd Baron Scrope of Masham (age 42), Thomas Grey of Werke and Heaton (age 30), and Richard of Conisbrough 1st Earl Cambridge (age 30) were intending to replace King Henry V of England with Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster as King of England based on Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster having a better claim to the throne being descended from Edward III's second son Lionel of Antwerp 1st Duke of Clarence whereas King Henry V of England was descended from the third son John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster.

Robert Willoughby 6th Baron Willoughby (age 30), Richard de Vere 11th Earl of Oxford (age 29), Thomas Montagu 1st Count Perche 4th Earl Salisbury (age 27) and Thomas Camoys 1st Baron Camoys (age 64) sat in judgement.

Meeting of Henry V and the Duke of Burgundy

Chronicle of Gregory [1400-1467]. June 1416. And the Duke of Burgayne (age 45) and the Counte of Charlys (age 19) son come to Gravelynge; and the King (age 29) sende thedyr the Duke of Glouceter (age 25) his brother and the Erle of Marche (age 24) to abyde there in ostage, wylys that the Duke of Burgayne come to Calys to speke with the King; and in the myddys of the ryver the lordys mette togedyr. And the dukys sone of Burgayn ressayvyd our lordys and led them in to Fraunce, and the Erle of Warwyke (age 34) ressayvyd the Duke of Burgayne ande brought him to Calys, and there they hadde a conselle twyne them two; and thenne he toke his leve of the kyng. And the Erle of Warwyke brought him unto Gravelyng water and in to the same place there as they mette at the first metynge; and there every party toke her leve of othyr. And thenne the King retornyd ayenne into Inglonde and the emperoure saylyde unto Holande and so passyd forthe in to Constaunce.

Alle so that same year the Duke of Bedforde (age 27) and the Erle of Marche (age 24), on our Lady Day the Assumpsyon, they fought whythe viij grete carykys of Jene and whythe l. othyr shyppys, and they toke them whythe her patronys and drownyde a grette hulke of the contre of Flaundrys.

On 28th May 1420 William Bourchier 1st Count of Eu (age 46) died at Troyes, France [Map]. He was buried at Llanthony Secunda Priory, Gloucestershire [Map]. His son [his brother-in-law] Henry (age 16) succeeded 2nd Count Eu.

Coronation of Catherine of Valois

Chronicle of Robert Fabyan [-1512]. [24th February 1421] ... and forthe I wyll precede to shewe unto you some parte of the great honour that was vsed & excercysed upon the daye of the sayd quenes coronacion, whiche was after solempnyzed in seynt Peters churche of Westmynster, upon the daye of seynt Mathy the Apostle, or the xxiiii [24th] day of February. After which solempnyzacon in yt churche endyd, she was conveyed into the great halle of Westmynster, & there sette to dyner; upon whose right hande satte, at the ende of the same table, the archebysshop of Caunterbury (age 58), and Henry (age 46), surnamed the rych cardynall of Winchester; and upon the lefte hande of ye quene sat the kynge of Scottes (age 26) in his astate, ye whiche was servyd with coveryd messe lyke unto the forenamed bysshops, but after theym. And upon the same hande & syde, nere to the borde ende, sat the duchesse of Yorke (age 54)1, and the coutesse of Huntyngdon (age 58). The erle of the Marche (age 29) holdynga ceptre in his hande, knelyd upon the right syde. The erle marshal in lyke maner knelyd upon the left hande of ye quene. The conntesse of Kent (age 41)2 sat under the table at the ryght foot, and the coutesse marshall at the left foot. The duke of Glouceter, sir Humfrey (age 30), was that daye overloker, and stode before the quene bare hedyd. Sir Richarde Neuyll was that daye carver to the quene. The erlys brother of Suffolk cupberer, sir lohn Stewarde sewar. The lord Clyfford paterer, instede of ye erle of Warwik. The lord Wyllughby boteler, in stede of ye erle of Arudell. The lorde Gray Ruthyn (age 59), or Ryffyn, naperer. The lord of Awdeley amner, in stede of the erle of Cambrydge. The erle of Worceter (age 25) was that day erle marshal, in absence of the erle marshall, the whiche rode aboute the halle upon a great courser, wt a multytude of typped stauys aboute hym, to kepe the rome in the halle.

Note 1. her husband Edward 2nd Duke of York 1st Duke Albemarle had been killed six years before at the Battle of Agincourt so correctly Dowager Duchess of York.

Note 2. her husband [his uncle] Edmund Holland 4th Earl Kent had been killed thirteen years before at the Battle of Île de Bréhat so correctly Dowager Countess of Kent.

Before 18th October 1424 [his brother-in-law] Humphrey Stafford 6th Earl Stafford (age 22) and Anne Neville Duchess Buckingham (age 16) were married. She by marriage Countess Stafford. She the daughter of Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland (age 60) and Joan Beaufort Countess of Westmoreland (age 45). On 18th January 1425 Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster (age 33) died at Trim Castle. He was buried at Clare Priory, Suffolk [Map]. His nephew Richard (age 13) succeeded 6th Earl March, 5th Earl of Ulster, 8th Baron Mortimer of Wigmore.

On 6th March 1427 John Holland 2nd Duke Exeter (age 31) and [his former wife] Anne Stafford Duchess Exeter were married. She by marriage Duchess Exeter. She the daughter of Edmund Stafford 5th Earl Stafford and [his former mother-in-law] Anne of Gloucester Plantagenet Countess Eu and Stafford (age 44). He the son of John Holland 1st Duke Exeter and Elizabeth Lancaster Duchess Exeter. They were second cousins. He a great grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 20th September 1432 [his former wife] Anne Stafford Duchess Exeter died.
