Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

1470 Earldom of Northumberland returned to the Percy Family
On 25th April 1457 [her father] John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 26) and [her mother] Isabel Ingaldsthorpe (age 16) were married by Cardinal Thomas Bourchier (age 39) at Canterbury Cathedral [Map]. She the heir of her father [her grandfather] Edmund Ingaldsthorpe who had died the previous year. Eight manors were settled on them in jointure. He the son of [her grandfather] Richard Neville Earl Salisbury (age 57) and [her grandmother] Alice Montagu 5th Countess of Salisbury (age 50). They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.
In 1460 a petition noted "The Nevilles state that Isabel was found to be Ingoldisthorpe's daughter and heir. When they requested livery of the estates from the chancellor in Chancery, he refused on the grounds that the king had granted the marriage and wardship to the queen (age 29). The Nevilles disputed this as Isabel was 14, and not a minor at common law. John Neville made recognizances in £1,000 to the queen on the understanding that if it was found that such a grant to the queen was not available, then she would not take any money from Neville. The Nevilles are unable to have a day in their law, and the queen has still levied part of the £1,000, and they are forced to sue a special livery at great expense. They request that the recognizances by annulled, and that women of the age of 14 when their ancestors die should have no problem of obtaining livery of their lands and tenements." On 27th March 1470 [her father] John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 39) revoked his title of Earl of Northumberland so that the Earldom could be given to of the Percy family who were its traditional holders.
Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland (age 21) was restored 4th Earl of Northumberland, 7th Baron Percy of Alnwick, 15th Baron Percy of Topcliffe. Maud Herbert Countess Northumberland (age 12) by marriage Countess of Northumberland.
A deeply unpopular move with the Neville family who had been longstanding enemies of the Percies in the North. He was created 1st Marquess Montagu instead. Possibly a consequence of the defection of [her uncle] Warwick the Kingmaker (age 41) to the Lancastrian cause as evidenced by the Welles Rebellion earlier in the year.
On 27th March 1470 [her brother] George Neville 1st Duke Bedford (age 9) was created 1st Duke Bedford by King Edward IV of England (age 27) in preparation for his marriage to Elizabeth York Queen Consort England (age 4) which didn't, in the end, take place. He, George, was nephew to [her uncle] Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury (age 41) whose defection to the Lancastrian side may have caused the King to change his mind about his daughter's marriage.
On 14th April 1471 Edward IV (age 28) commanded at the Battle of Barnet supported by his brothers George (age 21) and Richard (age 18), John Babington (age 48), Wiliam Hastings (age 40) (commanded), Ralph Hastings, [her step-father] William Norreys (age 30), William Parr (age 37), John Savage (age 49), William Bourchier Viscount Bourchier (age 41), Thomas St Leger (age 31), John Tuchet 6th Baron Audley, 3rd Baron Tuchet (age 45), Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (age 40), John Scott (age 48) and Thomas Strickland.
The Yorkists William Blount (age 29), Humphrey Bourchier (age 36), Henry Stafford (age 46) and Thomas Parr were killed.
Humphrey Bourchier 1st Baron Cromwell (age 40), was killed. Baron Cromwell extinct.
The Lancastrians...
[her uncle] Warwick the Kingmaker (age 42) was killed. Earl Salisbury, Baron Montagu, Baron Montagu and Baron Monthermer forfeit on the assumption he was attainted either before or after his death; the date of his attainder is unknown. If not attainted the titles may have been abeyant between his two daughters Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence (age 19) and Anne Neville Queen Consort England (age 14).
[her father] John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 40) was killed. Marquess Montagu, Baron Montagu forfeit; unclear as to when he was attainted. He was buried at Bisham Abbey [Map].
William Tyrrell was killed.
William Fiennes 2nd Baron Saye and Sele (age 43) was killed. His son Henry (age 25) succeeded 3rd Baron Saye and Sele. Anne Harcourt Baroness Saye and Sele by marriage Baroness Saye and Sele.
Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter (age 40) commanded the left flank, was badly wounded and left for dead, Henry Stafford and John Paston (age 27) were wounded, John de Vere 13th Earl of Oxford (age 28) commanded, and John Paston (age 29) and William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont (age 33) fought.
Robert Harleston (age 36) was killed.
Thomas Hen Salusbury (age 62) was killed.
Thomas Tresham (age 51) escaped but was subsequently captured and executed on the 6th of May 1471.

On 4th May 1483 [her brother] George Neville 1st Duke Bedford (age 22) died. He being the son of [her father] John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu, the nephew of [her uncle] Warwick the Kingmaker who should, perhaps, have inherited the Earldoms of Warwick and Salisbury from his mother that had been appropriated by George Neville 1st Duke Bedford and King Richard III of England (age 30). The timing somewhat suspicious. The future Richard III would now enjoy the whole of the Warwick inheritance.
In December 1483 Thomas Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Masham (age 54) died. His son [her brother-in-law] Thomas (age 24) succeeded 6th Baron Scrope of Masham. [her sister] Elizabeth Neville Baroness Scrope and Despencer by marriage Baroness Scrope of Masham.
Around 1490 [her son] William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton was born to [her husband] Thomas Fitzwilliam (age 41) and Lucy Neville (age 22) at Aldwark, North Yorkshire [Map]. He married November 1513 his half third cousin once removed Mabel Clifford Countess Southampton, daughter of Henry "Shepherd Lord" Clifford 10th Baron Clifford and Anne St John Baroness Clifford.
Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

Around 1495 [her daughter] Margaret Fitzwilliam was born to [her husband] Thomas Fitzwilliam (age 46) and Lucy Neville (age 27) at Aldwark, North Yorkshire [Map]. She married her third cousin once removed William Gascoigne and had issue.
On 29th May 1495 [her husband] Thomas Fitzwilliam (age 47) died.
After 29th May 1495. Monument to [her former husband] Thomas Fitzwilliam (deceased) and Lucy Neville (age 27) in St Mary's Church Tickhill Doncaster [Map]. Originally located in Tickhill Friary the tomb was moved to St Mary's Church at the Dissolution in 1538. Restored in 2012. The alabaster chest tomb believed to be one of the earliest examples of Italianate carving. The Lancastrian Esses Collar highly unusual; unique even but then so is the armour.
Thomas Fitzwilliam: On 13th January 1448 he was born to Richard Fitzwilliam in Aldwark, North Yorkshire [Map]. Around 1473 Thomas Fitzwilliam and Lucy Neville were married. She the daughter of John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu and Isabel Ingaldsthorpe. On 29th May 1495 Thomas Fitzwilliam died.
Around 1500 [her son] Anthony Browne was born to [her husband] Anthony Browne (age 56) and Lucy Neville (age 32). He married (1) before 1526 Alice Gage and had issue (2) after 31st March 1540 his second cousin once removed Elizabeth "The Fair Geraldine" Fitzgerald Countess Lincoln, daughter of Gerald Fitzgerald 9th Earl of Kildare and Elizabeth Grey Countess Kildare.
Around 1502 [her daughter] Elizabeth Browne Countess of Worcester was born to [her husband] Anthony Browne (age 58) and Lucy Neville (age 34). She married before 1526 her fourth cousin Henry Somerset 2nd Earl of Worcester, son of Charles Somerset 1st Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth Herbert 3rd Baroness Herbert Raglan, and had issue.
Around 17th November 1506 [her husband] Anthony Browne (age 63) died at Calais [Map].
In 1508 Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 24) and Anne Browne were married secretly at Stepney [Map]. She, Anne, being the step-daughter of his [her sister] first wife's (age 42) sister Lucy Neville (age 40). They, Charles and Anne, had possibly been betrothed before his marriage to Margaret Neville. They were fifth cousins.
After 21st April 1509 Thomas Wriothesley (age 21), who wasn't present, made a drawing of the death of Henry VII (deceased). The drawing shows those present and in some cases provides their arms by which they can be identified. From top left clockwise:

[her son] William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton (age 19) closing the King's eyes. There is doubt as to whether the person shown is William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton given his age of around nineteen at the King's death. He appears to be holding a Staff of Office although sources state he wasn't appointed Gentleman Usher, in which role he would have a Staff of Office, until Henry VIII's Coronation in Jun 1509.
The Arms below him are Quarterly 1 Lozengy argent & gules (FitzWilliam); 2 Arms of [her father] John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu 3 Quartered 1 possibly Plantagenet with white border ie Holland 2&3 Tibetot, 4 Unknown, overall a star for difference indicating third son. William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton was his father's third son, and his mother was Lucy Neville (age 41) daughter of John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu. It appears correct that the person represented is William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton. William Fitzwilliam 1st Earl of Southampton was the childhood companion of Henry VIII (age 17).

Matthew Baker: From 1486 he was appointed Governor of Jersey. In May 1513 he died in Bermondsey Abbey [Map].

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.
