Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes

Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. Battle of Moel-y-Don

On 6th November 1282 the English forces attempted to cross the Menai Straits to invade Gwynedd without waiting for the arrival of Edward's larger force. The battle was a rout. [his father] Roger Clifford [aged 39] drowned. The brothers William Burnell and Philip Burnell were killed.

On 14th May 1292 [his mother] Isabella Vipont [aged 38] died.

On 3rd November 1295 Robert Clifford 1st Baron Clifford [aged 21] and Maud Clare Baroness Clifford Baroness Welles [aged 19] were married at Clifford Castle, Herefordshire [Map]. They were third cousin once removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

After 1296 Robert Clifford 1st Baron Clifford [aged 21] was appointed Governor of Carlisle Castle.

1296 Capture of Berwick

On 30th March 1296 the army of King Edward I captured Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland [Map] from William "Hardy" Douglas 2nd Lord Douglas [aged 56]. Richard Cornwall [aged 44] was killed during the course of the siege. Robert Clifford 1st Baron Clifford [aged 21] fought.

22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk

On 22nd July 1298 King Edward I of England [aged 59] defeated the Scottish army led by William Wallace during the 22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk at Falkirk [Map] using archers to firstly attack the Scottish shiltrons with the heavy cavalry with infantry completing the defeat.

Baron's Letter to the Pope

Around 20th February 1304 a chevauchée of English knights including Robert Clifford 1st Baron Clifford [aged 29], William Latimer 2nd Baron Latimer of Corby [aged 28], John Mohun 1st Baron Dunster [aged 35], John Segrave 2nd Baron Segrave [aged 48] and the future King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland [aged 29] attempted, unsuccessfully, to capture Simon Fraser and William Wallace at Happrew, Peebles.

Death of King Edward I

On 7th July 1307 King Edward I of England [aged 68] died at Burgh by Sands [Map] whilst on his way north to Scotland. His son Edward [aged 23] succeeded II King of England. Earl Chester merged with the Crown.

On 24th June 1314 the Scottish army of King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland [aged 39] including, James "Black" Douglas [aged 28], heavily defeated the English army led by King Edward II of England [aged 30] at the Battle of Bannockburn.
