All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

2nd. 1784. Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret 1735-1826. Extinct. 10th March 1849.

In 1681 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 13) was created 1st Baron Carteret of Hawnes.

Before 22nd April 1690 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 22) and Jane Granville Baroness Gower (age 35) were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret of Hawnes. She the daughter of John Granville 1st Earl Bath (age 61) and Jane Wyche.

On 22nd September 1695 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 28) died. His son John (age 5) succeeded 2nd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, 3rd Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey.

On 2nd January 1763 John Carteret 2nd Earl Granville (age 72) died at Arlington Street. His son Robert (age 42) succeeded 3rd Earl Granville, 3rd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, 4th Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey.

In 1776 Robert Carteret 3rd Earl Granville (age 55) died. Earl Granville, Baron Carteret of Hawnes, Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey extinct.

On 9th May 1797 George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret (age 27) and Harriet Courtenay Baroness Carteret (age 25) were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret of Hawnes. She the daughter of William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath (age 61).

In 1784 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 49) was created 1st Baron Carteret with a special remainder to the younger sons of his brother, the Marquess of Bath.

In 1810 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 75) and Eleanor Smart Baroness Carteret were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret.

In 1826 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret (age 91) died. His nephew George (age 55) succeeded 2nd Baron Carteret.

On 19th February 1838 George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret (age 68) died. His brother John (age 65) succeeded 3rd Baron Carteret.

On 10th March 1849 John Thynne 3rd Baron Carteret (age 76) died at his home Hawnes Park, Bedfordshire. Baron Carteret extinct. His estates including Hawnes Park, Bedfordshire were inherited by his nephew John Thynne (age 50).
