The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In 1139 Harvey Le Breton 1st Earl of Wiltshire (age 29) was created 1st Earl Wiltshire.

In 1140 Harvey Le Breton 1st Earl of Wiltshire (age 30) negotiated the surrender of Devizes Castle [Map], preventing it from falling into the hands of Robert Normandy 1st Earl Gloucester (age 41). The castle was lost the following year to a mob. Harvey Le Breton 1st Earl of Wiltshire and his wife Sybilla left for Britanny. Earl Wiltshire forfeit.

In 1449 James Butler 1st Earl Wiltshire 5th Earl Ormonde (age 28) was created 1st Earl Wiltshire.

On 1st May 1461 James Butler 1st Earl Wiltshire 5th Earl Ormonde (age 40) was beheaded at Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland [Map] having been captured at, or after, the Battle of Towton. His brother John (age 39) succeeded 6th Earl Ormonde. Earl Wiltshire forfeit.

On 5th January 1470 John Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 42) was created 1st Earl Wiltshire. See Warkworth Note 5.

Before 7th April 1470 John Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 42) and Constance Green Countess Wiltshire (age 43) were married. She by marriage Countess Wiltshire. He the son of Humphrey Stafford 1st Duke of Buckingham and Anne Neville Duchess Buckingham (age 62).

On 8th May 1473 John Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 45) died. His son Edward (age 3) succeeded 2nd Earl Wiltshire.

After 13th July 1494 Edward Stafford 2nd Earl Wiltshire (age 24) and Margaret Grey Countess Wiltshire were married. She by marriage Countess Wiltshire. He the son of John Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire and Constance Green Countess Wiltshire. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 24th March 1499 Edward Stafford 2nd Earl Wiltshire (age 28) died at Drayton House, Northamptonshire [Map]. He was buried at St Peter's Church, Lowick [Map]. Earl Wiltshire extinct.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Thomas Boleyn 1st Earl Wiltshire and Ormonde (age 52) was created 1st Earl Wiltshire, 1st Earl Ormonde. Elizabeth Howard Countess of Wiltshire and Ormonde (age 49) by marriage Countess Wiltshire, Countess Ormonde. His mother (age 75) was the daughter of the last Earl Ormonde Thomas Butler 7th Earl Ormonde.

George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon (age 42) was created 1st Earl Huntingdon. Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon (age 46) by marriage Countess Huntingdon.

Robert Radclyffe 1st Earl of Sussex (age 46) was created 1st Earl of Sussex. Elizabeth Stafford Countess Sussex (age 50) by marriage Countess of Sussex.

On 12th March 1539 Thomas Boleyn 1st Earl Wiltshire and Ormonde (age 62) died. He was buried at St Peter's Church, Hever. His monument has a brass. He is depicted dressed in full robes wearing the insignia of a Knight of the Garter, with the Badge on his left breast and the Garter around his left knee. His head rests on a helm surmounted by a crest of a falcon displayed (his daughter's heraldic badge) and his feet rest on a griffin. The inscription reads: Here lieth Sir Thomas Bullen, Knight of the Order of the Garter, Erle of Wilscher and Erle or Ormunde, which decessed the 12th dai of Marche in the iere of our Lorde 1538. Earl Wiltshire, Earl Ormonde and Viscount Rochford extinct. His brother James Boleyn (age 46) inherited Hever Castle, Kent [Map] who sold it a year later to the Crown [or possibly exchanged it for manors in Norfolk].

On 4th February 1629 William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester (age 70) died. His son John (age 31) succeeded 5th Marquess Winchester, 5th Earl Wiltshire, 5th Baron St John. Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

On 5th March 1675 John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester (age 77) died. His son Charles (age 45) succeeded 6th Marquess Winchester, 6th Earl Wiltshire, 6th Baron St John. Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

On 27th February 1699 Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton (age 69) died. His son Charles (age 38) succeeded 2nd Duke Bolton, 7th Marquess Winchester, 7th Earl Wiltshire, 7th Baron St John.

On 21st January 1722 Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton (age 61) died. His son Charles (age 36) succeeded 3rd Duke Bolton, 8th Marquess Winchester, 8th Earl Wiltshire, 8th Baron St John. Anne Vaughan Duchess Bolton by marriage Duchess Bolton.

On 26th August 1754 Charles Powlett 3rd Duke Bolton (age 68) died. His brother Harry (age 63) succeeded 4th Duke Bolton, 9th Marquess Winchester, 9th Earl Wiltshire, 9th Baron St John.

On 9th October 1759 Harry Powlett 4th Duke Bolton (age 68) died. His son Charles (age 41) succeeded 5th Duke Bolton, 10th Marquess Winchester, 10th Earl Wiltshire, 10th Baron St John.

On 5th July 1765 Charles Powlett 5th Duke Bolton (age 47) committed suicide at Grosvenor Square, Belgravia shooting himself in the head with a pistol. His brother Harry (age 44) succeeded 6th Duke Bolton, 11th Marquess Winchester, 11th Earl Wiltshire, 11th Baron St John. Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton (age 29) by marriage Duchess Bolton.

On 25th December 1794 Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton (age 74) died without male issue. Duke Bolton extinct. His third cousin once removed George (age 72) succeeded 12th Marquess Winchester, 12th Earl Wiltshire, 12th Baron St John. Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester. Most of his estates including Bolton Castle [Map] were inherited by his elder brother's illegitimate daughter Jean Mary (age 43) whose husband Thomas Orde (age 54) added the surname Powlett to his own.

On 22nd April 1800 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 77) died. His son Charles (age 36) succeeded 13th Marquess Winchester, 13th Earl Wiltshire, 13th Baron St John.

On 29th November 1843 Charles Burroughs-Paulet 13th Marquess Winchester (age 79) died. His son John (age 42) succeeded 14th Marquess Winchester, 14th Earl Wiltshire, 14th Baron St John.

On 4th July 1887 John Paulet 14th Marquess Winchester (age 86) died. His son Augustus (age 29) succeeded 15th Marquess Winchester, 15th Earl Wiltshire, 15th Baron St John.

On 11th December 1899 Augustus Paulet 15th Marquess of Winchester (age 41) was killed in action at Magersfontein, South Africa in a battle where the defending Boer force defeated the advancing British forces. His brother Henry (age 37) succeeded 16th Marquess Winchester, 16th Earl Wiltshire, 16th Baron St John.

On 28th June 1962 Henry Paulet 16th Marquess of Winchester (age 99) died. His first cousin twice removed Richard (age 57) succeeded 17th Marquess Winchester, 17th Earl Wiltshire, 17th Baron St John.
