Biography of Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany 1124-1155

Before 1113 [her father] Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 16) and [her mother] Matilda Fitzroy Duchess Brittany were married. She by marriage Duchess Brittany. She the illegitmate daughter of [her grandfather] King Henry I "Beauclerc" England (age 44). He the son of [her grandfather] Alan Canhiart IV Duke Brittany (age 49) and [her grandmother] Ermengarde Anjou Duchess Brittany and Aquitaine (age 44). They were fourth cousins.

Before 1125 Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany was born to [her father] Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 28) and [her mother] Matilda Fitzroy Duchess Brittany. She a granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

In 1136 [her future husband] Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond (age 36) was created 1st Earl Richmond.

Before 1138 Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond (age 38) and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany (age 13) were married. She by marriage Countess Richmond. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 41) and Matilda Fitzroy Duchess Brittany. He the son of Stephen Penthièvre Count Tréguier and Hawise Guingamp. They were half second cousin once removed. She a granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

In 1138 [her son] Conan "The Young" Penthièvre IV Duke Brittany was born to [her husband] Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond (age 38) and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany (age 13). He a great grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England. He married his half fourth cousin Margaret Dunkeld Duchess Brittany, daughter of Henry Dunkeld 3rd Earl Huntingdon 1st Earl of Northumbria and Ada Warenne Countess Huntingdon and Northumbria, and had issue.

On 15th September 1146 [her husband] Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond (age 46) died at Brittany [Map]. His son [her son] Conan (age 8) succeeded 2nd Earl Richmond.

In 1148 Odo II Duke Brittany and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany (age 23) were married. She the daughter of Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 52) and Matilda Fitzroy Duchess Brittany.

In 1148 Eudes Rohan Viscount Porhoët and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany (age 23) were married. She the daughter of Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 52) and Matilda Fitzroy Duchess Brittany.

On 17th September 1148 [her father] Conan "Fat" Canhiart III Duke Brittany (age 52) died. He had disinherited his son Hoel on his deathbed for being illegitimate. His daughter Bertha (age 23) succeeded I Duchess Brittany. [her husband] Odo II Duke Brittany by marriage Duke Brittany.

In 1155 Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany (age 30) died. Her son [her son] Conan (age 17) succeeded IV Duke Brittany.

After 1180 [her former husband] Odo II Duke Brittany died.

[her daughter] Enougen Penthièvre Abbess Saint Sulpice was born to Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany. She a great granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

[her daughter] Constance Penthièvre Viscountess Rohan was born to Alan "Black" Penthièvre 1st Earl Richmond and Bertha Canhiart I Duchess Brittany. She a great granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England. She married 1166 Alan Rohan 3rd Viscount Rohan and had issue.
