Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

In 1583 Philip Sidney (age 28) and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 16) were married. They were half sixth cousins.
In 1590 [her father] Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex (age 24) and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. He the son of [her grandfather] Walter Devereux 1st Earl Essex and [her grandmother] Lettice Knollys Countess Essex and Leicester (age 46). They were half fourth cousin once removed.
On 30th September 1599 Frances Devereux Duchess of Somerset was born to [her father] Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex (age 33) and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 32).
On 25th February 1601 [her father] Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex (age 35) was beheaded at Tower Green, Tower of London [Map] as a consequence of his involvement in the Essex Rebellion. Earl Essex, Viscount Hereford, Baron Bourchier and Baron Ferrers of Chartley forfeit. He was the last person to be executed at the Tower of London. It isn't clear whether his other titles Viscount Hereford, Baron Ferrers of Chartley and Baron Bourchier were forfeit.
In 1603 [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 11) and [her sister-in-law] Frances Howard Countess Essex and Somerset (age 12) were married. They were separated after the wedding given their young age. Essex went on a European tour from 1607 to 1609. When he returned she avoided him having fallen for Robert Carr 1st Earl Somerset (age 16) whilst her husband was away. He was ill with smallpox. She sought an annulment with her father [her father] Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex and uncle Henry Howard 1st Earl of Northampton (age 62) acting for her. She maintained the marriage had not been consummated and was examined by ten matrons and two midwives who found her hymen intact. It was widely rumoured at the time that Sir Thomas Monson's (age 38) daughter was a substitute, which is possible because she had requested to be veiled during the examination "for modesty's sake". He maintained he was capable with other women, but was unable to consummate his marriage blaming her. She the daughter of Thomas Howard 1st Earl Suffolk (age 41) and Catherine Knyvet Countess Suffolk (age 39). He the son of Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 36). They were fourth cousins.
In 1603 [her step-father] Richard Burke 4th Earl Clanricarde 1st Earl St Albans (age 31) and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 36) were married. He the son of Ulrick Burke 3rd Earl Clanricarde.
In 1604 [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 12) was restored 3rd Earl Essex, 4th Viscount Hereford, 13th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, 10th Baron Bourchier although it isn't clear whether the latter three titles were forfeit when his father was executed in 1601. [her sister-in-law] Frances Howard Countess Essex and Somerset (age 13) by marriage Countess Essex.
On 22nd June 1610 [her future husband] William Seymour 2nd Duke of Somerset (age 22) and Arabella Stewart (age 35) were married in secret at Palace of Placentia, Greenwich [Map]. For having married without permission King James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland (age 44) had Arabella Stewart imprisoned in Sir Thomas Perry's House, Lambeth and he in the Tower of London [Map]. She the daughter of Charles Stewart 5th Earl Lennox and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Lennox. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
After 24th March 1611 [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 20) was appointed Privy Counciller.
In 1612 [her half-sister] Elizabeth Sidney Countess Rutland (age 27) died. She was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire [Map].
Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.
In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

Diary of Anne Clifford. 28th April 1619. The 28th my Lord (age 30) and I, my Coz. Sackville and Lady Windsor went to the Tower to see my [her sister-in-law] Lady Somerset (age 28), where we saw her little child (age 3)1. My Lord went to see Earl of Northumberland (age 55)2 and I and the Lady Windsor went to see Lady Shrewsbury (age 63)3, and after supper my Lord and I went by water to Channel Row to see my Lord of Hertford (age 79)4 and his Lady (age 40) where we found my Lady Beauchamp5, my [her brother] Lord Essex's (age 28) Sister, then I went to Arundel House and talked with her about Lords being made Knights of the Garter.

On 11th March 1630 [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 39) and [her sister-in-law] Elizabeth Paulet Countess Essex were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. He the son of [her father] Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex and [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 63). They were fourth cousins.
On 17th February 1633 [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex (age 66) died.
On 12th November 1635 [her step-father] Richard Burke 4th Earl Clanricarde 1st Earl St Albans (age 63) died. His son [her half-brother] Ulick (age 31) succeeded 5th Earl Clanricarde, 2nd Earl St Albans. Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Strafford (age 42) was blamed for his death making an enemy of Ulick Burke 1st Marquess Clanricarde and his half-brother (they shared the same mother [her mother] Frances Walsingham Countess Essex) [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 44).
Around 1637 [her son-in-law] Richard Molyneux 2nd Viscount Molyneux (age 18) and [her daughter] Frances Seymour Countess Southampton (age 19) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Molyneux. She the daughter of [her husband] William Seymour 2nd Duke of Somerset (age 49) and Frances Devereux Duchess of Somerset (age 37).
Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

In 1637 [her daughter] Mary Seymour Countess Winchelsea was born to [her husband] William Seymour 2nd Duke of Somerset (age 49) and Frances Devereux Duchess of Somerset (age 37). She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. She married 1650 her third cousin Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Winchilsea, son of Thomas Finch 2nd Earl Winchilsea and Cecily Wentworth Countess Winchelsea, and had issue.
In 1641 [her husband] William Seymour 2nd Duke of Somerset (age 53) was created 1st Marquess Hertford.

On 16th June 1642 [her son] William Seymour (age 21) died.
On 20th September 1643 the First Battle of Newbury was fought at Newbury, Berkshire [Map] with King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (age 42) commanding the Royalist army and [her brother] Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 52) commanding the victorious Parliamentary army. For King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland John Byron 1st Baron Byron (age 44) fought with distinction.
Henry Bertie was killed.
Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon (age 33) was killed. His son Charles (age 10) succeeded 2nd Earl Carnarvon, 3rd Baron Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire, 3rd Baronet Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire.
William Villiers 2nd Viscount Grandison (age 29) was killed. His brother John succeeded 3rd Viscount Grandison.
Edward Villiers (age 23) fought.
Lucius Carey 2nd Viscount Falkland (age 33) was killed. His son Lucius (age 11) succeeded 3rd Viscount Falkland.
Richard Neville (age 28) served under the Earl Carnarvon. Carnarvon was killed and Neville took up the command as a Colonel of Horse.
Major General Charles Fleetwood (age 25) was wounded.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 7th May 1661 [her son-in-law] Charles Boyle 3rd Baron Clifford (age 21) and [her daughter] Jane Seymour (age 24) were married. She the daughter of [her former husband] William Seymour 2nd Duke of Somerset and Frances Devereux Duchess of Somerset (age 61). He the son of Richard Boyle 2nd Earl Cork 1st Earl Burlington (age 48) and Elizabeth Clifford Countess Burlington (age 47). They were half sixth cousins.
