Biography of Ferdinand I King Aragon 1380-1416

Before 4th October 1379 [his father] John I King Castile (age 21) and [his mother] Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile (age 21) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Peter IV King Aragon (age 60) and [his grandmother] Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Aragon. He the son of [his grandfather] Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile and [his grandmother] Juana Manuel Queen of Castile (age 40). They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 27th November 1380 Ferdinand I King Aragon was born to John I King Castile (age 22) and Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile (age 22).

On 13th September 1382 [his mother] Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile (age 24) died.

On 9th October 1390 [his father] John I King Castile (age 32) died. His son [his brother] Henry (age 11) succeeded III King Castile.

In 1394 Ferdinand I King Aragon (age 13) and Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon (age 20) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Aragon. He the son of John I King Castile and Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile. They were first cousin once removed.

In 1396 [his daughter] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Castile was born to Ferdinand I King Aragon (age 15) and [his wife] Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon (age 22). Coefficient of inbreeding 4.41%.

In 1396 [his son] Alfonso V King Aragon was born to Ferdinand I King Aragon (age 15) and [his wife] Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon (age 22). Coefficient of inbreeding 4.41%.

On 31st May 1410 [his uncle] King Martin I of Aragon (age 53) died. His nephew Ferdinand (age 29) succeeded I King Aragon.

On 12th June 1415 [his son] Alfonso V King Aragon (age 19) and [his daughter-in-law] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Aragon (age 13) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Aragon. She the daughter of [his brother] Henry III King Castile and Catherine of Lancaster Queen Consort Castile (age 42). He the son of Ferdinand I King Aragon (age 34) and [his wife] Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon (age 41). They were first cousins. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 2nd April 1416 Ferdinand I King Aragon (age 35) died. His son [his son] Alfonso (age 20) succeeded V King Aragon.

On 16th December 1435 [his former wife] Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon (age 61) died.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
