Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 14th June 1677 [his father] Paul Whichcote 2nd Baronet [aged 34] and [his mother] Jane Gould Lady Whichcote [aged 14] were married. She by marriage Lady Whichcote of the Inner Temple in the City of London. The difference in their ages was 20 years.

Around 1692 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet was born to Paul Whichcote 2nd Baronet [aged 49] and Jane Gould Lady Whichcote [aged 29].

In 1698 [his mother] Jane Gould Lady Whichcote [aged 35] died.

In 1708 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 16] was admitted to St Catharine's College, Cambridge University.

In 1711 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 19] was admitted to Trinity Hall, Cambridge University.

In 1717 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 25] and Mary Banks Lady Whichcote were married.

On 27th November 1718 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 26] was elected MP Cambridgeshire at a by-election. He was defeated in 1722 after which he didn't stand again.

On 18th December 1721 [his father] Paul Whichcote 2nd Baronet [aged 78] died. His son Francis [aged 29] succeeded 3rd Baronet Whichcote of the Inner Temple in the City of London. [his wife] Mary Banks Lady Whichcote by marriage Lady Whichcote of the Inner Temple in the City of London.

On 9th September 1726 [his wife] Mary Banks Lady Whichcote died.

In or before 1733 Neville Hickman 4th Baronet [aged 31] and [his future wife] Frances Hall Lady Hickman and Whichcote were married. She by marriage Lady Hickman of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire.

In 1737 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 45] and Frances Hall Lady Hickman and Whichcote were married. She by marriage Lady Whichcote of the Inner Temple in the City of London.

In 1738 [his son] Christopher Whichcote 4th Baronet was born to Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 46] and [his wife] Frances Hall Lady Hickman and Whichcote.

On 27th October 1775 Francis Whichcote 3rd Baronet [aged 83] died. His son Christopher [aged 37] succeeded 4th Baronet Whichcote of the Inner Temple in the City of London.
