Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover 1580-1666

On 20th December 1576 [his father] John Carey 3rd Baron Hunsdon [aged 26] and [his mother] Mary Hyde Baroness Hunsdon [aged 22] were married.

Around 1580 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover was born to John Carey 3rd Baron Hunsdon [aged 29] and Mary Hyde Baroness Hunsdon [aged 26].

On 22nd June 1596 William Cockayne [aged 35] and [his future wife] Mary Morris Countess Dover [aged 31] were married.

In 1607 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 27] educated at Cambridge University.

Before 1608 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 27] and Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 17] were married. They were third cousin once removed.

In 1608 [his son] John Carey 2nd Earl Dover was born to Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 28] and [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 17]. He married 1. 9th May 1628 Dorothy St John, daughter of Oliver St John 1st Earl Bolingbroke and Elizabeth Paulet Countess Bolingbroke 2. 2nd December 1630 Abigail Cockayne Countess Dover, daughter of William Cockayne and Mary Morris Countess Dover, and had issue.

On 13th November 1615 [his daughter] Mary Carey was born to Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 35] and [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 25]. She married in or before 1647 her second cousin Thomas Wharton and had issue.

On 17th April 1617 [his father] John Carey 3rd Baron Hunsdon [aged 67] died at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire [Map]. His son Henry [aged 37] succeeded 4th Baron Hunsdon. [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 26] by marriage Baroness Hunsdon.

Diary of Anne Clifford. 6th April 1619. The 6th my Lord [aged 30] came from Buckhurst to Knole. At his being at Lewes there was great play between my Lord of Hunsden [aged 39], my Lady of Effingham, and my Lord who lost them £200, and the town entertained him with fireworks.

Diary of Anne Clifford. 19th April 1619. Monday the 19th I went to Somerset House and sat a good while there by the Queen's corpse, and then went into the Privy Galleries and shewed my Coz. Mary those fine delicate things there.

From thence I went to Bedford House and stayed with my Lady of Bedford [aged 39] a little while, and she and I went to Channel Row to see my Lady Hume [aged 33] the widow.

This day my Lord [aged 30], my Lord Hundson [aged 39], and my Sister Sackville, christened Hammon's child at St. Dunstan's Church.

On 6th July 1621 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 41] was created 1st Viscount Rochford. [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 31] by marriage Viscountess Rochford.

On 4th April 1627 [his mother] Mary Hyde Baroness Hunsdon [aged 73] died.

On 8th March 1628 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 48] was created 1st Earl Dover. [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 37] by marriage Countess Dover.

On 9th May 1628 John Carey 2nd Earl Dover [aged 20] and Dorothy St John were married. She died eight weeks later. She the daughter of Oliver St John 1st Earl Bolingbroke [aged 48] and Elizabeth Paulet Countess Bolingbroke. He the son of Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 48] and Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 37].

Before 1st November 1629 [his wife] Judith Pelham Countess Dover [aged 39] died.

On 6th July 1630 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 50] and Mary Morris Countess Dover [aged 65] were married at St Peter le Poer Church, Broad Street. She by marriage Countess Dover.

On 2nd December 1630 John Carey 2nd Earl Dover [aged 22] and Abigail Cockayne Countess Dover [aged 20] were married. She the daughter of William Cockayne and Mary Morris Countess Dover [aged 65]. He the son of Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 50] and Judith Pelham Countess Dover.

In or before 1647 [his son-in-law] Thomas Wharton [aged 31] and Mary Carey [aged 31] were married. She the daughter of Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 66] and Judith Pelham Countess Dover. They were second cousins.

On 24th December 1648 [his wife] Mary Morris Countess Dover [aged 83] died.

John Evelyn's Diary. 14th February 1657. To London, where I found Mrs. Cary; next day came Mr. Mordaunt [aged 30] (since Viscount Mordaunt), younger son to the Countess of Peterborough [aged 54], to see his mistress, bringing with him two of my Lord of Dover's [aged 77] daughters: so, after dinner, they all departed.

Around March 1658 [his son-in-law] Thomas Wentworth 5th Baron Wentworth [aged 46] and Philadelphia Carey Baroness Wentworth were married. She by marriage Baroness Wentworth. She the daughter of Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 78] and Judith Pelham Countess Dover. He the son of Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Cleveland [aged 67] and Anne Crofts Countess Cleveland. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 13th April 1666 Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover [aged 86] died at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire [Map]. His son John [aged 58] succeeded 2nd Earl Dover, 2nd Viscount Rochford. Abigail Cockayne Countess Dover [aged 56] by marriage Countess Dover.

[his daughter] Philadelphia Carey Baroness Wentworth was born to Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover and Judith Pelham Countess Dover. She married March 1658 her fifth cousin once removed Thomas Wentworth 5th Baron Wentworth, son of Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Cleveland and Anne Crofts Countess Cleveland, and had issue.

[his daughter] Anne Carey was born to Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover and Judith Pelham Countess Dover.
