Isabella of Castile Queen Consort Aragon 1283-1328

Chronicle of Jean le Bel Volume 1. This duke, whose name I do not know, had never had children by the duchess¹, nor had he any hope of having any. He had a half-brother on his mother’s side, she having remarried, who was called the Count of Montfort², and who was then living and had married the sister of Count Louis of Flanders³. This duke had also had another brother, born of the same father and mother⁴, who had died, and there remained of him a young daughter. The duke, her uncle, had married her to Sir Charles of Blois, the eldest son of the Count of Blois by the sister of King Philip of France⁵ who then reigned. He had promised him the duchy of Brittany after his death, because he feared that the Count of Montfort, his half-brother, might claim the right to it by nearness of kinship after his decease, although he was not his full brother⁶.

Cil duc, dont je ne sçay le nom, il n'avoit oncques eu enfans de la duchesse, ne aussy n'avoit nulle esperancæ d'en avoir, et avoit ung frere de par sa mere, qui avoit esté remariée, qu'on appelloit le conte de Montfort, qui lors vivoit et avoit à femme la seur du conte Loys de Flandres. Cil duc avoit eu ung aultre frere germain de pere et de mere qui trespassé estoit, et en estoit demourée une petite fille, laquelle le duc son oncle avoit mariée à messire Charles de Bloys, le maisné filz au conte de Bloys de la seur au roy Philippe de France qui adoncques estoit, et lui avoit promis la duchié de Bretaigne aprez son decès, pour tant qu'il se doubtoit que le conte de Montfort son frere n'y voulsist clamer droit par prochaineté aprez son decès, jasoit ce qu'il ne fust pas son frere germain.

John III had married successively: 1st, in 1298, Isabella of Valois, daughter of Charles of Valois; she probably died in 1303. 2nd, in 1310, Isabella of Castile, daughter of Sancho IV, King of Castile and León; she died on 24th July 1328. 3rd, on 21st March 1329, Joan of Savoy, daughter of Edward, Count of Savoy; she died on 29th June 1344. None of these wives bore him any children.

Note 2. John de Montfort was not, as Jean le Bel states, a brother by the mother of John II, but a brother by the father. Arthur II had in fact married, in 1275, Marie of Limoges, who died in 1291 after giving him three sons: John, Guy, and Peter. In 1294, he married in second nuptials Yolande of Dreux, daughter of Robert IV, Count of Dreux, and sole heiress of John, Count of Montfort-l’Amaury; she had previously been married in 1285 to Alexander III, King of Scotland. This second wife bore him five daughters and one son, John, Count of Montfort. The error made by Jean le Bel and repeated by Froissart seems, according to M. de la Borderie (Histoire de Bretagne, vol. II, p. 415 ff.), to have originated in the legends spread by the party of Charles of Blois at the time of the opening of the Breton succession, in order to have John, Count of Montfort, excluded from that inheritance.

2. Jean de Montfort était, non pas comme le dit Jean le Bel, frère par mère, mais frère par père de Jean IL. Arthur II avait en cffet épousé, en 1275, Marie de Limoges, qui mourut en 1291, après lui avoir donné trois fils: Jean, Gui et Pierre. En 1294, il épousa en secondes noces Yolande de Dreux, fille de Robert IV, comte de Dreux, et unique héritière de Jean, comte de Montfort-l'Amauri, qui avait été déjà mariée en 1285 au roi d'Écosse Alexandre III. Cette deuxième femme lui donna cinq filles et un fils, Jean, comte de Montfort. L'erreur commise par Jean le Bel et répétée par Froissart semble, suivant M. de la Borderie (Hist. de Bretagne, t. II, p. 415 et suiv.), avoir son origine dans les légendes répandues par le parti de Charles de Blois, au moment de l'ouverture de la succession de Bretagne, pour faire exclure Jean, comte de Montfort, de cet héritage.

Note 3. It was in 1329 that John of Montfort married Joan of Flanders, daughter of Louis of Flanders, Count of Nevers, and of Joan, Countess of Rethel.

3. C'est en 1329 que Jean de Montfort avait épousé Jeanne de Flandre, fille de Louis de Flandre, comte de Nevers, et de Jeanne, comtesse de Rethel.

Note 4. This brother was Guy, Count of Penthièvre, who died in 1331 and who, from his marriage to Joan, Countess of Goëlo (who died in 1327), had a daughter, Joan, Countess of Penthièvre, married in 1337 to Charles of Blois.

4. Ce frère était Gui, comte de Penthièvre, mort en 1331, et qui, de son mariage avec Jeanne, comtesse de Goëlo, morte en 1327, avait eu Jeanne, comtesse de Penthièvre, mariée en 1337 à Charles de Blois.

Note 5. Charles was the son of Margaret, sister of Philip of Valois, and of Guy of Châtillon, Count of Blois.

Note 6. John III sought by every means to exclude John of Montfort from the throne of Brittany. He even considered, in 1334, ceding Brittany after his death to the King of France.
