Adam Murimuth's Continuation and Robert of Avesbury’s 'The Wonderful Deeds of King Edward III'
This volume brings together two of the most important contemporary chronicles for the reign of Edward III and the opening phases of the Hundred Years’ War. Written in Latin by English clerical observers, these texts provide a vivid and authoritative window into the political, diplomatic, and military history of fourteenth-century England and its continental ambitions. Adam Murimuth Continuatio's Chronicarum continues an earlier chronicle into the mid-fourteenth century, offering concise but valuable notices on royal policy, foreign relations, and ecclesiastical affairs. Its annalistic structure makes it especially useful for establishing chronology and tracing the development of events year by year. Complementing it, Robert of Avesbury’s De gestis mirabilibus regis Edwardi tertii is a rich documentary chronicle preserving letters, treaties, and official records alongside narrative passages. It is an indispensable source for understanding Edward III’s claim to the French crown, the conduct of war, and the mechanisms of medieval diplomacy. Together, these works offer scholars, students, and enthusiasts a reliable and unembellished account of a transformative period in English and European history. Essential for anyone interested in medieval chronicles, the Hundred Years’ War, or the reign of Edward III.

The Nevilles disputed this as Isabel was 14, and not a minor at common law. John Neville made recognizances in £1,000 to the queen on the understanding that if it was found that such a grant to the queen was not available, then she would not take any money from Neville. The Nevilles are unable to have a day in their law, and the queen has still levied part of the £1,000, and they are forced to sue a special livery at great expense. They request that the recognizances by annulled, and that women of the age of 14 when their ancestors die should have no problem of obtaining livery of their lands and tenements." A deeply unpopular move with the Neville family who had been longstanding enemies of the Percies in the North. He was created 1st Marquess Montagu instead. Possibly a consequence of the defection of [her husband] Warwick the Kingmaker [aged 41] to the Lancastrian cause as evidenced by the Welles Rebellion earlier in the year.
On 27th March 1470 George Neville 1st Duke Bedford [aged 9] was created 1st Duke Bedford by King Edward IV of England [aged 27] in preparation for his marriage to Elizabeth York Queen Consort England [aged 4] which didn't, in the end, take place. He, George, was nephew to [her husband] Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury [aged 41] whose defection to the Lancastrian side may have caused the King to change his mind about his daughter's marriage.
On 13th December 1470 [her son-in-law] Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales [aged 17] and Anne Neville Queen Consort England [aged 14] were married at Angers Cathedral [Map]. She by marriage Princess of Wales. She the daughter of Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury [aged 42] and Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 44]. He the son of King Henry VI of England and II of France [aged 49] and Margaret of Anjou Queen Consort England [aged 40]. They were half third cousins. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 14th April 1471 Edward IV [aged 28] commanded at the Battle of Barnet supported by his brothers [her son-in-law] George [aged 21] and Richard [aged 18], John Babington [aged 48], Wiliam Hastings [aged 40] (commanded), Ralph Hastings, William Norreys [aged 30], William Parr [aged 37], John Savage [aged 49], William Bourchier Viscount Bourchier [aged 41], Thomas St Leger [aged 31], John Tuchet 6th Baron Audley, 3rd Baron Tuchet [aged 45], Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough [aged 40], John Scott [aged 48] and Thomas Strickland.
The Yorkists William Blount [aged 29], Humphrey Bourchier [aged 36], Henry Stafford [aged 46] and Thomas Parr were killed.
Humphrey Bourchier 1st Baron Cromwell [aged 40], was killed. Baron Cromwell extinct.
The Lancastrians...
Warwick the Kingmaker [aged 42] was killed. Earl Salisbury, Baron Montagu, Baron Montagu and Baron Monthermer forfeit on the assumption he was attainted either before or after his death; the date of his attainder is unknown. If not attainted the titles may have been abeyant between his two daughters Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence [aged 19] and Anne Neville Queen Consort England [aged 14].
John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu [aged 40] was killed. Marquess Montagu, Baron Montagu forfeit; unclear as to when he was attainted. He was buried at Bisham Abbey [Map].
William Tyrrell was killed.
William Fiennes 2nd Baron Saye and Sele [aged 43] was killed. His son Henry [aged 25] succeeded 3rd Baron Saye and Sele. Anne Harcourt Baroness Saye and Sele by marriage Baroness Saye and Sele.
Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter [aged 40] commanded the left flank, was badly wounded and left for dead, Henry Stafford and John Paston [aged 27] were wounded, John de Vere 13th Earl of Oxford [aged 28] commanded, and John Paston [aged 29] and William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont [aged 33] fought.
Robert Harleston [aged 36] was killed.
Thomas Hen Salusbury [aged 62] was killed.
Thomas Tresham [aged 51] escaped but was subsequently captured and executed on the 6th of May 1471.

On 12th July 1472 [her son-in-law] Richard Duke of Gloucester [aged 19] and Anne Neville [aged 16] were married at St Stephen's Chapel, Westminster Palace [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester. She the daughter of Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury and Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 45]. He the son of Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke of York and Cecily "Rose of Raby" Neville Duchess York [aged 57]. They were first cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
In 1474 Parliament declared Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 47] legally dead (she lived until 1492) so that Edward IV's [aged 31] two younger brothers [her son-in-law] George [aged 24] and the Richard [aged 21], who had married Anne Beauchamp's daughters, Isabel [aged 22] and Anne [aged 17] respectively, could enjoy the significant Beauchamp inheritance after her husband Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury had been killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471.
Some of the inhertance should have been given to George Neville 1st Duke Bedford [aged 13] but he was only thirteen at the time; his father John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu, younger brother of Warwick the Kingmaker, had also been killed at the Battle of Barnet. He, George Neville 1st Duke Bedford, died in 1483 aged twenty-one somewhat conveniently after the death of King Edward IV of England and before King Richard III of England acceded to the throne. Curiously the Act of Parliament described King Richard III of England enjoying the inheritance as long as there were Neville living heirs male. Upon the death of George Neville 1st Duke Bedford the Neville heir male was Richard Neville 2nd Baron Latimer of Snape [aged 6] born 1468 whose wardship was held by Cardinal Thomas Bourchier [aged 56].
Parliamentary Rolls Edward IV. 6th June 1474. Westminster Palace [Map]. Exemplification at the request of [her son-in-law] Richard Duke of Gloucester [aged 21], of the tenour of an act (English) in the Parliament summoned at Westminster [Map], 6 October, 12 Edward IV, and continued to 9 May, 14 Edward IV, ordaining that George Duke Clarence [aged 24], and Isabel [aged 22] his wife and Richard Duke of Gloucester, and Anne [aged 17] his wife, daughters and heirs to Richard Nevyle, late Earl of Warwick, and daughters and heirs apparent to Anne Beauchamp [aged 47], his wife should possess and enjoy as in the right of the said wives all possessions belonging to the said Countess as though she were naturally dead and that she should be barred and excluded therefrom, that they should make partition of the premises and the same partition should be good in law, that the said Dukes should enjoy for life all the possessions of their wives if they should outlive the latter, that the said George and Isabel should not make any alienation, grant, fine or recovery of any of the premises to the hurt of the said Richard and Anne or the latter to the hurt of the former, that if the said Richard and Anne be divorced and afterwards married this Act should hold good, that if they be divorced and he do his effectual diligence to be married to her and during her life be not wedded to any other woman he should enjoy as much of the premises as should appertain to her during his life, and that notwithstanding the restraint of alienation or recovery above specified the lordship, manor and wappentake of Chesterfield, Derbyshire [Map] and Scarvesdale with the appurtenances and all the lands and tenements in Chesterfield, Derbyshire [Map] and Scarvesdale sometime of Ales, late Countess of Salisbury, might be given to the King and his heirs in exchange for other lands and tenements, which shall however be subject of this Act.
On 22nd December 1476 [her daughter] Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence [aged 25] died from childbirth at Warwick Castle [Map]. The cause of death uncertain but likely a consequence of the birth of her fourth child Richard in early October. She was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey [Map]. The Founders Book of Tewkesbury Abbey Folio 39v records her death. [her son-in-law] George York 1st Duke of Clarence [aged 27] believed she had been murdered by Ankarette Hawkeston aka Twynyho. See Trial and Execution of Ankarette Twynyho.

In 1480 [her half-sister] Elizabeth Beauchamp Baroness Latimer [aged 63] died. Grave marker at the Beauchamp Chapel, St Mary's Church, Warwick [Map].
On 16th March 1485 [her daughter] Anne Neville Queen Consort England [aged 28] died at Westminster Palace [Map]. Probably of tuberculosis. The day she died there was an eclipse of the sun; a bad omen to some. There were rumours of foul play.
[her grandson] Edward "Last Plantagenet" York 17th Earl Warwick [aged 10] was restored 6th Baron Montagu, 9th Baron Montagu, 8th Baron Monthermer
In 1486 Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 59] resided at Beaulieu Abbey [Map].
On 20th September 1492 Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 66] died. Arguably, Her grandson Edward [aged 17] succeeded 17th Earl Warwick. His succession was unaffected by his father's attainder since the Earldom was held by his mother.
Her two daughters Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence and Anne Neville Queen Consort England had both predeceased her. Her remaining descendants were Isabel's children Margaret [aged 19] and Edward.
The succession is further complicated by Ann Beauchamp having been declared legally dead in 1471 at which time the Earldom was, arguably, abeyant between her two daughters.
Both Margaret and Edward were executed by the Tudors, in 1541 and 1499, respectively.
Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. 28th November 1499 ... and the [her grandson] Earle of Warwyke [aged 24],b sonne to the [her former son-in-law] Duke of Clarence, who had bene kept in the Tower [Map] from the age of 11 years unto the end of 14 yeares, was beheaded at the Tower Hill [Map].c A great pestilence throughout all England.
Note b. Edward Earl of Warwick was the last remaining male of the house of Plantagenet. He bore the title of Earl of Warwick, though it does not appear that his father's attainder had been reversed.
Note c. Warbeck [deceased] was executed at Tyburn [Map] on the 23rd Norember, together with O'Water, Mayor of C!ork, and the Earl of Warwick on the following day, or, according to some anthorities, on the 28th.
Note. "though it does not appear that his father's attainder had been reversed." Edward's claim to the Earldom of Waewick was from his mother Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence, daughter of Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury and Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick, whose claim had come from her mother Anne Beauchamp, so his father's attainder was irrelevant.

Note. This picture continues the genealogy. In the middle of the rubric are drawn, facing one another, the busts of a young man in peer's robes with a torse about his head, and of a young lady in gown and mantle with loosened hair bound by a fillet. The roundel below the youth is inscribed: Richard Nevill. son to Richard Erle of Salisbury wedded Anne Countesse of Warwik. The roundel below the maiden is inscribed: Anne Countesse of Warrewik suster & heir to Henr' Duc of Warrewyk. Below the roundels is an impaled but otherwise blank shield with a root at the point from which issue two rose branches. The one is turned towards the bust of a young queen with crown and sceptre, placed between two -other busts of a youth in peer's robe and cap of estate holding a rod and of a King with crown and sceptre. The roundels beneath are severally inscribed with their names: Anne doughter to the forsaid Richard & Anne first wif to prince E. & after to Kyng Richard Prince Edward son to Kyng henr' the vj first husbond of Anne of Clarance as by this portreiture is Kyng Richard the iijde second husbond to this Anne Below are two blank shields. From the point of the second a short rose stem descends to the bust of a youth in mantle and coronet with a roundel below him inscribed: Edward Plantagenet son to Kyng Richard. The other stem from Richard Nevill and Anne passes over to the bust of a lady wearing a spiked coronet, beside whom is another bust ofa young man in peer's mantle and spiked coronet. She is identified by the writing on the roundel as: Isabel duches ofClarance secunde doughter to the said Ric' & Anne and he as: George Duc of Clar[ence] From the point of the blank shield below issue two branches. The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Beauchamp Pageant. 54. Here shewes howe that Erle Richard hadde ij ladies the first hight Dame Elizabeth lady lyle by heneretaunce of her modre. and she was doughter to the lorde Barkeley by whom he hadde issu as appereth undre. And by his secund lady Dame Isabell late Countesse of Worcestre and heire to the lorde Spenser he hadde a son called henry heire to them bothe first Erle of Warrewik then by kyng henry the vjth made chief Erle of Englond and after Duke of Warrewyk. Also Erle Richard hadde by his ijde lady Dame Anne Countesse of Warrewik.
Note. The genealogy set forth in the rubric is graphically illustrated below by a series of portrait busts of the persons, surmounting roundels with shields of their arms, and accompanied by their names and titles. They are also so drawn as to represent a genealogical tree. At the top is Richard Beauchamp in his Earl's robes with a chaplet about his head and his right hand laid upon his breast. In the roundel below him is a quartered shield of the arms of Beauchamp and Newburgh, and about his head a scroll lettered: Sir Richard Beauchamp Erle of Warwik. On either side of the Earl are "ij ladies". Both are habited in gown and mantle and have unbound hair encircled by a chaplet. The lady on the Earl's right has a scroll issuing from her mouth lettered: Elizabeth lady lile by thenheritance of her modre. first wif to Erle Ric'. Below her in the roundel are her paternal arms of Berkeley (gules a chevron and ten crosses paty silver). The lady on the Earl's left has about her a scroll inscribed: Dame Isabel doughter & heire to the lorde Spens' ijde wif and has under her on the roundel a shield of the arms of Despencer. The Earl's roundel is slightly superposed upon those of his wives and has issuing from each junction the root and leaved branches of a rose tree. That from Dame Elizabeth has three branches, each of which passes behind the bust of a daughter. The girls are dressed like their mother but the shields upon the roundels bear only the faintest suggestion of their arms. Beneath them are written their names: Margaret Countes of Shrewisbury Dame Alanor first lady Roos & after Duchesse of Somerset Elizabeth lady Latymer The tree descending from the Earl and Dame Isabel has two branches. The first passes behind the bust of a youth in a hooded ermine mantle of a duke, with a spiked coronet on his head and a rod in his hand, under whom is written: Henry Duc of Warrewik son & heir to the said Richard & Dame Isabell The shield below him is blank. The second branch passes behind a lady, habited exactly like the others, having beneath the roundel, which bears a blank shield: Dame Anne Countess of Warrewik. wif to Ric' Nevile. son & heir to Ric' Erle of Salisbury
