Biography of Bartholomew "The Younger" Burghesh 2nd Baron Burghesh 1328-1369

Before 1314 [his father] Bartholomew "The Elder" Burghesh 1st Baron Burghesh (age 26) and [his mother] Elizabeth Verdun Baroness Burghesh (age 13) were married.

In or before 1328 Bartholomew "The Younger" Burghesh 2nd Baron Burghesh was born to Bartholomew "The Elder" Burghesh 1st Baron Burghesh (age 40) and Elizabeth Verdun Baroness Burghesh (age 27).

Before 10th May 1335 Bartholomew "The Younger" Burghesh 2nd Baron Burghesh (age 7) and Cecily Weyland (age 21) were married. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John of England.

Around 1342 [his daughter] Elizabeth Burghesh 3rd Baron Burghesh was born to Bartholomew "The Younger" Burghesh 2nd Baron Burghesh (age 14) and [his wife] Cecily Weyland (age 28).

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke [-1360]. In the same year, the Earl of Lancaster,¹ the Barons of Stafford (age 48) and Greystoke (age 28), along with the heirs of the Lords Percy (age 28) and Neville (age 12), as well as Lord Furnival and [his father] Bartholomew de Burghersh (age 62), together with many others, crossed over to Gascony around the Feast of All Saints [1st November 1349], to oppose the ravaging campaigns of John of Valois, son of the tyrant of the French, who was heavily harassing that duchy.

Eodem anno comes Lancastrie et barones Staffordie et de Greistoke, item heredes dominorum de Percy et de Neville atque dominus de Fornival et Bartholomeus de Burghasshe, cum multis aliis, circa festum Omnium Sanctorum transfretaverant in Vasconiam, posituri resistenciam debacacioni Iohannis de Valesio, filii tiranni Francorum, qui ducatum illum nimis infestavit.

Note 1. The earl of Lancaster was appointed lieutenant of Poitou on the 18th October 1349. Rymer's Fœdera 3.190. Knighton. William, lord Greystock, succeeded in 1323 and died in 1358. The heirs of Percy and Nevill were Henry, afterwards 3rd lord Percy, 1352-1368, who had fought at Crécy, and was brother-in-law of Lancaster; and John Nevill, who had been present with his father at Nevile's Cross, married Percy's sister, and became 3rd lord Nevill, 1367-1388. Thomas, lord Furnival, had also fought at Crécy, and died about 1364. Both Bartholomew, lord Burghersh, and his son (age 21), of the same name, served in this campaign.

In August 1354 [his wife] Cecily Weyland (age 40) died.

On 3rd August 1355 [his father] Bartholomew "The Elder" Burghesh 1st Baron Burghesh (age 68) died at Dover, Kent [Map]. He was buried in the St Catherine Chantry at Lincoln Cathedral [Map] with his father and brother. His son Bartholomew (age 27) succeeded 2nd Baron Burghesh.

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke [-1360]. On Friday [20th November 1355], having been informed that the French were nearby and had formed themselves into five large battles, our forces advanced about one mile from their lodging and drew themselves up in a suitable field, prepared for battle. Thus, with the army arrayed, someone cried out that a hare had been roused; hearing this, the enemy sent out forty lancers, who, upon seeing the army drawn up in full order and quickly returning with this report, caused all the French to flee in great panic, as was reported by those captured in the pursuit. That day, Bartholomew de Burghersh (age 27),¹ John Chandos (age 35), and James Audley (age 37), leading a force of eighty lancers, attacked the rear of the French host, capturing thirty-two knights and squires, among them the Count of Roumania,² and killing many baggage handlers, destroying their supplies. Later, the prince lodged at the town of Muwos, where four French men-at-arms who had fled into the church were captured by the English; they lost only their horses and arms. On Saturday, in rainy weather, they took a difficult and narrow road to the castle of Oradrie, where the prince spent the night, and the next morning had it burned.

Sero principe ospitato in villa de Muwos, quatuor Gallici armorum, Anglicos fugitivi in ecclesiam illius ville, equos et arma dumtaxat perdiderunt. Sabbato pluvioso carpserunt malum iter et strictum ad castrum de Oradrie, in quo princeps pernoctavit, et mane id combussit.

Note 1. The prince of Wales's letter to the bishop of Winchester (Avesbury 434 The two famous comrades of the Black Prince, sir John Chandos and sir James Audley, were both founders of the Garter. Chandos was mortally wounded in a skirmish near Lussac in Poitou, 31st December 1369.

Note 2. There was a seigneur de Romeny, but no count with that title.

On 1st May 1360 [his mother] Elizabeth Verdun Baroness Burghesh (age 60) died. She was buried at Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire [Map].

On 5th April 1369 Bartholomew "The Younger" Burghesh 2nd Baron Burghesh (age 41) died. He was buried at Lady Chapel Walsingham Priory. His daughter [his daughter] Elizabeth (age 27) succeeded 3rd Baroness Burghesh.
