Biography of Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere 1800-1857

On 4th September 1785 [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 27] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 20] were married. He by marriage Earl Sutherland. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Sutherland 18th Earl Sutherland. He the son of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford [aged 64] and Louisa Egerton Countess Gower.

On 1st January 1800 Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere was born to [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 41] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 34] at 21 Arlington Street, Piccadilly.

On 26th October 1803 [his grandfather] Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford [aged 82] died. His son [his father] George [aged 45] succeeded 2nd Marquess Stafford, 3rd Earl Gower, 4th Baron Gower, 8th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 38] by marriage Marchioness Stafford.

Before 1815 [his brother-in-law] Henry Charles Howard 13th Duke of Norfolk [aged 23] and [his sister] Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 56] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 49]. He the son of Bernard Howard 12th Duke of Norfolk [aged 49] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 44].

Before October 1820 [his brother-in-law] Richard Grosvenor 2nd Marquess Westminster [aged 25] and [his sister] Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 62] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 55]. He the son of Robert Grosvenor 1st Marquess Westminster [aged 53] and Eleanor Egerton Marchioness Westminster [aged 50].

On 18th June 1822 Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 22] and Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 19] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. He the son of George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 64] and Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 57]. They were fourth cousin once removed.

On 28th May 1823 [his brother] George Sutherland Leveson-Gower 2nd Duke Sutherland [aged 36] and [his sister-in-law] Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard Duchess Sutherland [aged 17] were married. She the daughter of George Howard 6th Earl Carlisle [aged 49] and Georgiana Cavendish Countess Carlisle [aged 39]. He the son of [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 65] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 58]. They were first cousin once removed.

On 15th June 1823 [his son] George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 23] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 20]. He married 29th April 1846 his second cousin once removed Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere, daughter of John Campbell 1st Earl Cawdor and Elizabeth Thynne Countess Cawdor, and had issue.

On 15th September 1824 [his son] Francis Leveson-Gower aka Egerton was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 24] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 21]. He married 26th September 1865 his second cousin once removed Louisa Caroline Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish 7th Duke Devonshire and Blanche Georgiana Howard, and had issue.

On 31st December 1825 [his son] Algernon Fulke Leveson-Gower aka Egerton was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 25] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 22]. He married 1863 his third cousin Alice Louisa Cavendish and had issue.

On 6th February 1829 [his son] Arthur Frederick Leveson-Gower aka Egerton was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 29] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 26]. He married 1858 Helen Smith.

On 10th October 1830 [his daughter] Alice Leveson-Gower aka Egerton Countess Strafford was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 30] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 27]. She married 25th July 1854 her half third cousin once removed George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford, son of George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford and Agnes Paget.

On 22nd February 1832 [his daughter] Blanche Leveson-Gower aka Egerton Countess Sandwich was born to Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 32] and [his wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 29]. She married 1865 her fifth cousin John William Montagu 7th Earl Sandwich, son of George Montagu 6th Earl Sandwich and Louisa Lowry-Corry Countess of Sandwich.

On 19th July 1833 [his father] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 75] died. His son [his brother] George [aged 46] succeeded 2nd Duke Sutherland, 3rd Marquess Stafford, 20th Earl Sutherland, 4th Earl Gower, 5th Baron Gower, 9th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. [his sister-in-law] Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard Duchess Sutherland [aged 27] by marriage Duchess Sutherland.

On 29th January 1839 [his mother] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 73] died. Her son [his brother] George [aged 52] succeeded 20th Earl Sutherland.

On 16th March 1842 Bernard Howard 12th Duke of Norfolk [aged 76] died. He was buried at Fitzalan Chapel, Arundel Castle [Map]. His son [his brother-in-law] Henry [aged 50] succeeded 13th Duke Norfolk, 24th or 31st Earl Arundel, 14th Earl Surrey, 11th Earl Norfolk, 21st Baron Maltravers, 21st Baron Arundel. [his sister] Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk [aged 54] by marriage Duchess Norfolk.

On 17th February 1845 Robert Grosvenor 1st Marquess Westminster [aged 77] died at Eaton Hall, Cheshire [Map]. He was buried at Grosvenor Vault, St Mary's Church, Eccleston. His son [his brother-in-law] Richard [aged 50] succeeded 2nd Marquess Westminster, 3rd Earl Grosvenor, 9th Baronet Grosvenor of Eaton in Cheshire. [his sister] Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster [aged 48] by marriage Marchioness Westminster.

On 29th April 1846 George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere [aged 22] and Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of John Campbell 1st Earl Cawdor [aged 55] and Elizabeth Thynne Countess Cawdor [aged 51]. He the son of Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 46] and Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 43]. They were second cousin once removed.

The Queen has been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignities of Viscount and Earl of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland unto the Right Honourable Lord Francis Egerton [aged 46], and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten,by the names, stiles, and titles of Viscount Brackley, of Brackley, in the county of Northampton, and Earl of Ellesmere, of Ellesmere, in the county of Salop. In 1851 [his son] Granville Leveson-Gower aka Egerton died at California.

On 25th July 1854 [his son-in-law] George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford [aged 24] and Alice Leveson-Gower aka Egerton Countess Strafford [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 54] and Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 51]. He the son of George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford [aged 48] and Agnes Paget. They were half third cousin once removed.

On 18th February 1857 Francis Leveson Gower aka Egerton 1st Earl Ellesmere [aged 57] died. His son George [aged 33] succeeded 2nd Earl Ellesmere, 2nd Viscount Brackley. Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere [aged 32] by marriage Countess Ellesmere.

In 1870 [his former wife] Harriet Greville Countess Ellesmere [aged 67] died.
