Biography of Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater 1656-1716

On 28th February 1652 [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 22] and Christian Freschville [aged 18] were married. He the son of [her grandfather] John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester [aged 54] and [her grandmother] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester.

On 12th February 1655 Henry Carey and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester were married at St Dionis Backchurch. She the illegitmate daughter of [her grandfather] Emanuel Scrope 1st Earl of Sunderland and [her grandmother] Martha Jeanes. He the son of Henry Carey 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 59] and Martha Cranfield Countess Monmouth [aged 54]. They were second cousins.

On 12th February 1655 [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 25] and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester were married. She the illegitmate daughter of [her grandfather] Emanuel Scrope 1st Earl of Sunderland and [her grandmother] Martha Jeanes. He the son of John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester [aged 57] and Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester. They were fourth cousin once removed.

Around 1656 Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater was born to [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 26] and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester.

On 7th November 1664 [her future husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 17] and Elizabeth Cranfield were married. She the daughter of James Cranfield 2nd Earl Middlesex and Anne Bourchier Countess Middlesex [aged 33]. He the son of [her future father-in-law] John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater [aged 41] and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 2nd April 1673 John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 26] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 17] were married at St Dionis Backchurch. She the daughter of Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 43] and Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester. He the son of John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater [aged 49] and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 5th March 1675 [her grandfather] John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester [aged 77] died. His son [her father] Charles [aged 45] succeeded 6th Marquess Winchester, 6th Earl Wiltshire, 6th Baron St John. [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

On 7th May 1675 [her son] Charles Egerton was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 28] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 19]. He died aged eleven in 1687.

On 14th May 1676 [her daughter] Mary Egerton Baroness Byron was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 29] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 20]. She married 1703 William Byron 4th Baron Byron, son of William Byron 3rd Baron Byron and Elizabeth Chaworth Baroness Byron.

On 10th July 1679 [her brother] Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton [aged 18] and [her sister-in-law] Margaret Coventry [aged 22] were married. He the son of [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 49] and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester. They were third cousins.

On 15th August 1679 [her son] Thomas Egerton was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 32] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 23]. He died aged seven in 1687.

On 1st November 1680 [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester died.

On 11th August 1681 [her son] Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 34] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 25]. He married (1) 9th February 1703 Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater, daughter of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough, and had issue (2) 4th August 1722 his fifth cousin once removed Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater, daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford, and had issue.

On 8th February 1683 [her brother] Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton [aged 22] and [her sister-in-law] Frances Ramsden were married. His second marriage. He the son of [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 53] and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester.

In 1684 [her son] William Egerton was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 37] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 28].

On 26th October 1686 [her father-in-law] John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater [aged 63] died. He was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden. His son [her husband] John [aged 39] succeeded 3rd Earl Bridgewater, 4th Viscount Brackley, 4th Baron Ellesmere. Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 30] by marriage Countess Bridgewater.

John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater: On 9th November 1646 he was born to John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. In April 1687 [her son] Charles Egerton [aged 11] burned to death in the fire which destroyed Bridgewater House at Bridgwater House Barbican. He was buried at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire.

On 10th February 1689 [her son] Bishop Henry Egerton was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 42] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 33]. He married 18th December 1720 Elizabeth Adriana Bentinck, daughter of William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland, and had issue.

Around 1694 [her son] Charles Egerton was born to [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 47] and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 38]. He married before 7th November 1725 his sixth cousin Catherine Greville and had issue.

Around 1697 [her brother] Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton [aged 36] and [her sister-in-law] Henrietta Scott aka Crofts [aged 15] were married. His third marriage. The difference in their ages was 21 years. She the illegitmate daughter of James Scott 1st Duke Monmouth 1st Duke Buccleuch and Eleanor Needham. He the son of [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 67] and [her mother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester.

On 6th March 1698 Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester [aged 79] died. His son Robert [aged 49] succeeded 4th Earl of Leicester, 4th Viscount Lisle. [her sister-in-law] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester [aged 44] by marriage Countess of Leicester.

On 27th February 1699 [her father] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton [aged 69] died. His son [her brother] Charles [aged 38] succeeded 2nd Duke Bolton, 7th Marquess Winchester, 7th Earl Wiltshire, 7th Baron St John.

On 19th March 1701 [her husband] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater [aged 54] died. He was buried in the Bridgewater Chapel, St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden. His son Scroop [aged 19] succeeded 4th Earl Bridgewater, 5th Viscount Brackley, 5th Baron Ellesmere.

In 1703 [her son-in-law] William Byron 4th Baron Byron [aged 32] and Mary Egerton Baroness Byron [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Baroness Byron of Rochdale in Lancashire. She the daughter of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 47].

On 9th February 1703 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater [aged 21] and Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Countess Bridgewater. She the daughter of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough [aged 52] and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough [aged 42]. He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 47].

On 11th April 1704 [her daughter] Mary Egerton Baroness Byron [aged 27] died.

Around 1707 [her son] John Egerton died.

On 23rd May 1716 Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater [aged 60] died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 30th May 1716.

Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater: On 15th March 1687 she was born to John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough. John Evelyn's Diary. 1st December 1702. After the excess of honor conferred by the Queen on the Earl of Marlborough, by making him a Knight of the Garter and a Duke, for the success of but one campaign, that he should desire £5,000 a year to be settled on him by Parliament out of the Post Office, was thought a bold and unadvised request, as he had, besides his own considerable estate, above £30,000 a year in places and employments, with £50,000 at interest. He had married one daughter to the son of my Lord Treasurer Godolphin, another to the Earl of Sunderland, and a third to the Earl of Bridgewater. He is a very handsome person, well-spoken and affable, and supports his want of acquired knowledge by keeping good company. On 9th February 1703 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater and she were married. She by marriage Countess Bridgewater. She the daughter of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough. He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater. On 22nd March 1714 Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 29th March 1714.

John Egerton: On 3rd February 1704 he was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater and Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater. On 30th January 1719 John Egerton died of smallpox at Eton College [Map]. He was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 5th February 1719.

[her daughter] Elizabeth Egerton was born to John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater. She married 6th May 1718 her fourth cousin once removed Thomas Catesby Paget, son of Henry Paget 1st Earl Uxbridge, and had issue.
