On 28th January 1308 [her father] King Edward II of England (age 23) and [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 13) were married at Boulogne sur Mer [Map]. She the daughter of [her grandfather] King Philip IV of France (age 39) and [her grandmother] Joan Blois I Queen Navarre. He the son of [her grandfather] King Edward I of England and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England. They were second cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.
On 5th July 1321 Joan of the Tower Queen Consort Scotland was born to [her father] King Edward II of England (age 37) and [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 26) at the Tower of London [Map]. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.17%.
In or before May 1322 John Giffard 2nd Baron Giffard Brimpsfield (age 34) was executed by [her father] King Edward II of England (age 38). Baron Giffard Brimpsfield forfeit.
On 19th May 1322 [her uncle] Charles IV King France I King Navarre (age 27) and Blanche of Burgundy Queen Consort France (age 25) marriage annulled as a consequence of her adultery. In 1313 [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 27) gave gifts of coin-purses to her sisters-in-law Blanche of Burgundy Queen Consort France and Margaret of Burgundy Queen Consort France. The coin-purses were subsequently seen by Isabella to be in the possession of the Norman knights Gautier and Philippe d'Aunay. When Isabella visited her father [her grandfather] King Philip IV of France again in 1314 she informed him she suspected the two sisters to be having affairs with the two knights. The two knights were arrested, confessed to adultery under torture, and were executed. The two women were sentenced to life imprisonment at Château Gaillard [Map]. Margaret's husband [her uncle] Louis X King France I Navarre became King in Nov 1314 whilst she was in prison; she became Queen of France by marriage. Somewhat conveniently she died five months later. Blanche of Burgundy Queen Consort France remained in prison until her husband Charles IV King France I King Navarre became King in 1322 at which time he had their marriage annulled.
In 1324 [her sister] Eleanor of Woodstock Plantagenet (age 5) was placed into the care of her cousin Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer (age 31). She was subsequently placed into the care of Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 54) (he had formerly been married to her aunt [her aunt] Joan of Acre and Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny with her younger sister Joan of the Tower (age 2) at Pleshey Castle [Map].
On 25th January 1327 [her father] King Edward II of England (age 42) abdicated King of England. His son [her brother] Edward (age 14) succeeded III King of England.
On 1st February 1327 [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 14) was crowned III King of England at Westminster Abbey [Map] by Archbishop Walter Reynolds.
On 21st September 1327 [her father] King Edward II of England (age 43) was murdered at Berkeley Castle [Map]. There is speculation as to the manner of his death, and as to whether he died at all. Some believe he may have lived the rest of his life in Europe - see Publications de la Société Archéologique de Montpellier 1877: Fieschi Letter.
On 24th January 1328 [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 15) and [her sister-in-law] Philippa of Hainault (age 17) were married at York Minster [Map] by Archbishop William Melton (age 53). She by marriage Queen Consort England. She was crowned the same day. She the daughter of William of Avesnes I Count Hainaut III Count Avesnes III Count Holland II Count Zeeland (age 42) and Joan Valois Countess Zeeland Holland Avesnes and Hainaut (age 34). He the son of [her father] King Edward II of England and [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 33). They were second cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Stephen I England.
The marriage was the quid pro quo for her father William of Avesnes I Count Hainaut III Count Avesnes III Count Holland II Count Zeeland having supported his mother Isabella of France Queen Consort England and Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 40) returning to England to usurp the throne of Edward's father King Edward II of England.
On 17th July 1328 King David II of Scotland (age 4) and Joan of the Tower Queen Consort Scotland (age 7) were married at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland [Map]. She the daughter of King Edward II of England and Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 33). He the son of King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland (age 54) and Elizabeth Burgh Queen Consort Scotland.
On 7th June 1329 [her father-in-law] King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland (age 54) died at Cardross Manor, Argyll. He was buried at Dunfermline Abbey [Map]. His son [her husband] David (age 5) succeeded II King Scotland. Joan of the Tower Queen Consort Scotland (age 7) by marriage Queen Consort Scotland.
In 1330 [her brother] John of Eltham 1st Earl Cornwall (age 13) was created 1st Earl Cornwall.
On 19th March 1330 the King's uncle [her uncle] Edmund of Woodstock 1st Earl Kent (age 28) was beheaded at Winchester Castle [Map]. Earl Kent forfeit. Edmund had been convicted of plotting against the court believing his brother [her father] King Edward II was still alive. It later emerged the plot had been created by Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 42) to entrap Edmund. [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 17) was unable to show leniency risking complicity in the plot. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map].

On 29th November 1330 Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 43) was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn [Map] accused of assuming royal power and of various other high misdemeanours. His body hung at the gallows for two days and nights. He was buried at Christ Church, Greyfriars [Map]. [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 35) subsequently requested his burial at Wigmore Abbey [Map] and, after firstly refusing, [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 18) allowed his remains to be removed to Wigmore Abbey [Map]. Earl March, Baron Mortimer of Wigmore forfeit.
On 24th November 1331 [her husband] King David II of Scotland (age 7) was crowned II King Scotland at Scone Abbey [Map].
In May 1332 [her brother-in-law] Reginald "Black" I Duke Guelders (age 37) and [her sister] Eleanor of Woodstock Plantagenet (age 13) were married at Nijmegen [Map]. She by marriage Countess Guelders. His second marriage; he had four daughters from his first marriage. He subsequently sent her from court to Deventer Abbey [Map] in 1336 under the pretext that she had leprosy. He subsequently tried to annul the marriage but she contested the annulment by proving she wasn't a leper. The difference in their ages was 23 years. She the daughter of [her father] King Edward II of England and [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 37). He the son of Reginald I Count Guelders and Margaret Dampierre Countess Guelders. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Stephen I England.
On 12th August 1332 Battle of Dupplin Moor was fought between the supporters of the infant [her husband] King David II of Scotland (age 8), son of [her father-in-law] King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland, and the supporters of King Edward I of Scotland (age 49), supported by the English. The Bruce army included [her brother-in-law] Robert Bruce Lord of Liddesdale and Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar (age 39). The Balliol army included David III Strathbogie 11th Earl Atholl (age 23), Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 30), Thomas Ughtred 1st Baron Ughtred (age 40) and Walter Manny 1st Baron Manny (age 22). The battle is notable for being the first to use dismounted men-at-arms supported by archers; a formation that would bring repeated success to the English both in Scotland and France.
Robert Bruce Lord of Liddesdale was killed leading a charge.
Nicholas Hay (age 47) was killed.
Thomas Randolph 2nd Earl Moray was killed. His brother John (age 26) succeeded 3rd Earl Moray.
Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar was killed.
On 19th July 1333 [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 20) defeated the Scots army at the Battle of Halidon Hill near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland [Map]. [her brother] John of Eltham 1st Earl Cornwall (age 16) commanded.
English archers, just as at the Battle of Dupplin Moor one year previously, had a significant impact on the massed ranks of Scottish schiltrons. Edward's army included: [her uncle] Thomas of Brotherton 1st Earl Norfolk (age 33), who commanded the right wing, Hugh Courtenay 1st or 9th Earl Devon (age 56), Robert Pierrepont, Hugh Courtenay 2nd or 10th Earl Devon (age 30), Henry Beaumont Earl Buchan (age 54) and John Sully (age 50). One of the few English casualties was John Neville (age 34) who was killed.
The Scottish army included [her husband] King David II of Scotland (age 9). Alexander Bruce, Alan Stewart (age 61), James Stewart (age 57), John Stewart, William Douglas 1st Earl Atholl, Archibald Douglas (age 35) who were all killed.
Hugh 4th Earl Ross (age 36) was killed. His son William succeeded 5th Earl Ross.
Malcolm Lennox 2nd Earl Lennox was killed. His son Domhnall succeeded Earl Lennox.
Kenneth de Moravia Sutherland 4th Earl Sutherland was killed. His son William succeeded 5th Earl Sutherland. Johanna Menteith Countess Sutherland by marriage Countess Sutherland.
On 30th September 1336 [her brother] John of Eltham 1st Earl Cornwall (age 20) died at Perth [Map]. Earl Cornwall extinct. He was buried at the east side of the doorway to the Chapel of St Edmund, Westminster Abbey [Map]. His monument comprises a head of the statue encircled by a coronet of large and small leaves, remarkable for being the earliest specimen of the kind. The details of plate-armour, surcoat, gorget, coroneted helmet, with other accessories, give great antiquarian interest to this work. It was formerly surmounted by a canopy, of which, however, no traces are now visible.
In January 1337 [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 24) created a number of new Earldom's probably in preparation for his forthcoming war against France...

William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 27) was created 1st Earl of Northampton. Elizabeth Badlesmere Countess Northampton (age 24) by marriage Countess of Northampton.
Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 46) was created 1st Earl Gloucester probably as compensation for his daughter Margaret Audley Countess Stafford (age 19) having been abducted by Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 35).
Robert Ufford 1st Earl Suffolk (age 38) was created 1st Earl Suffolk. Margaret Norwich Countess Suffolk (age 51) by marriage Countess Suffolk.
On 24th June 1340 [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 27) attacked the French fleet at anchor during the Battle of Sluys capturing more than 200 ships, killing around 18000 French. The English force included John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 24), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 30), Henry Scrope 1st Baron Scrope of Masham (age 27), William Latimer 4th Baron Latimer of Corby (age 10), John Lisle 2nd Baron Lisle (age 22), Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 38), Henry of Grosmont 1st Duke Lancaster (age 30), Walter Manny 1st Baron Manny (age 30), Hugh Despencer 1st Baron Despencer (age 32) and Richard Pembridge (age 20).
Thomas Monthermer 2nd Baron Monthermer (age 38) died from wounds. His daughter Margaret succeeded 3rd Baroness Monthermer.
On 26th August 1346 the army of [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 33) defeated the French army at the Battle of Crécy. The English army was commanded by King Edward III of England, his son [her nephew] Edward "Black Prince" (age 16), Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick (age 33), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 36) and John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 30).

The French army suffered significant casualties. King Philip "Fortunate" VI of France (age 52) was wounded. William de Coucy (age 60) and his son Enguerrand 6th Lord de Coucy (age 33) and were killed.
Charles II Count Alençon (age 49) was killed. His son Charles (age 9) succeeded Count Alençon.
Louis Chatillon II Count Blois I Count Chatillon was killed. His son Louis succeeded III Count Blois.
Louis Dampierre II Count Nevers I Count Flanders (age 42) was killed. His son Louis (age 15) succeeded III Count Nevers, II Count Flanders.
King John I of Bohemia (age 50) was killed. His son Charles (age 30) succeeded IV King Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperor Luxemburg. Blanche Valois Holy Roman Empress Luxemburg (age 29) by marriage Holy Roman Empress Luxemburg.
Rudolph "Valiant" Metz I Duke Lorraine (age 26) was killed. His son John succeeded I Duke Lorraine.
Jean IV de Harcourt (age 39) was killed.
Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On 22nd February 1347 John Graham Earl Menteith (age 57) was condemned to be executed as a traitor. The sentence was carried out on the 28th February 1347 when John Graham Earl Menteith was hanged, drawn and quartered by direct orders of [her brother] King Edward I (age 34) to whom he had previously sworn fealty.

Clement, etc. To our venerable brother, [John] Bishop of Moray, greeting, etc. A petition on behalf of our beloved son a noble young man, John of Moray, and our beloved daughter in Christ, a noble woman, Margaret of Graham (age 14), a damsel, daughter of our beloved son, a noble man, John of Graham, Earl of Menteith, who belong to your diocese and the diocese of Dunblane, has lately been laid before us, representing that the said John of Moray and Margaret desire to be united together in matrimony; but because through descent from the same family they happen to be related within the fourth degree of consanguinity, they cannot contract this marriage without obtaining our apostolic dispensation in the matter; wherefore, on their behalf, humble supplication has been made to us that we would vouchsafe to provide for them by the ready benefit of a dispensation: We, therefore, yielding to the supplications of our very dear daughter in Christ, [Joanna,] illustrious queen of Scotland (age 27), humbly entreating us concerning this matter, and to those of John of Moray and Margaret foresaid, and for certain causes explained to us, do, by apostolic letters, command you, brother, that if it is so, you may, by our authority, grant a dispensation, so that notwithstanding the impediment which has arisen out of this consanguinity, the said John of Moray and Margaret may be free to contract marriage, and after it shall have been contracted, lawfully to abide therein; declaring that the offspring to he conceived of the said marriage shall be legitimate. [her nephew] Lionel of Antwerp 1st Duke of Clarence (age 12) was created 1st Earl of Ulster.
[her nephew] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 10) was created 1st Earl Richmond.
Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 49) was created 1st Earl Stafford.
On 22nd April 1355 [her sister] Eleanor of Woodstock Plantagenet (age 36) died. She was buried at Deventer Abbey [Map].
Archaeologia Volume 35 1853 XXXIII. On the 26th [Apr 1358], having returned to Shene [Map], doubtless from Windsor, [her mother] Isabella (age 63) receives her daughter Joan Queen of Scotland (age 36), with her retinue. Joan is stated to have come at this time on a political mission to the court of Edward III.; and from the present document it would appear that she continued a guest with her mother Isabella up to the time of the death of the latter; and that even her own dress and the livery of her retinue were supplied from Isabella's funds.
Archaeologia Volume 35 1853 XXXIII. On the 12th [Jun 1358] she [[her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 63)] returned to Ospringe, and on the 13th proceeded to Leeds Castle, where she remained till the 2nd of July; receiving as visitors the Prior of Leeds and Sir Arnold Savage (age 33), and dining in Langley Park, with many strangers, on the 19th of June; and being at Sutton Park, together with the Queen of Scotland (age 36), on the 25th. It is evident, therefore, that her daughter had accompanied her from Hertford.
Archaeologia Volume 35 1853 XXXIII. On Monday the 2nd of July [1358], [her mother] Isabella (age 63) left Leeds on her return to Hertford; which she reached on the 6th; making the daily stages of Rochester, Dartford, London, and Tottenham. Sir John de Wynewyk supped with the Queen in London, and the Countess of Warren (age 62) and the Maréchal D'Audenham at Tottenham. She was accompanied to Hertford by the Queen of Scotland (age 36). Isabella remained without visitors for some days after her return to Hertford. A memorandum is entered that the King was expected on the 13th of July; and on the 17th, strangers were entertained during the day, but they are not named.
Archaeologia Volume 35 1853 XXXIII. On the 26th [Jul 1358], [her mother] Isabella (age 63) and her daughter the Queen of Scotland (age 37) spent the day at Almesho Park; and the following day at Madecroft Park.
On 22nd August 1358 [her mother] Isabella of France Queen Consort England (age 63) died at Hertford Castle [Map]; see Archaeologia Vol. 35 XXXIII. She was buried in Christ Church, Greyfriars [Map].
The funeral was performed by Archbishop Simon Islip. She was buried in the mantle she had worn at her wedding and at her request, [her father] Edward's heart, placed into a casket thirty years before, was interred with her.
On 19th May 1359, or thereabouts, a double-royal wedding celebration took place at Reading Abbey, Berkshire [Map] whereby two children of [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 46) were married:
[her nephew] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 19) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess Richmond. She the daughter of Henry of Grosmont 1st Duke Lancaster (age 49) and Isabel Beaumont Duchess Lancaster (age 39). He the son of King Edward III of England and [her sister-in-law] Philippa of Hainaut Queen Consort England (age 48). They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.
John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 11) and [her niece] Margaret Plantagenet Countess of Pembroke (age 12) were married. At the time John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke was a ward of King Edward III of England who would enjoy the benefit of the substantial revenue of the Earldom of Pembroke until John came of age nine years later in 1368. She died two or so years later probably of plague. She the daughter of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainaut Queen Consort England. He the son of Laurence Hastings 1st Earl Pembroke and Agnes Mortimer Countess of Pembroke (age 42). They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England.
On 13th April 1360 a freak weather event known as Black Monday Hailstorm occurred as the army of [her brother] King Edward III of England (age 47) were camped outside Chartres [Map]. Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick (age 47), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 50), Henry of Grosmont 1st Duke Lancaster (age 50), [her nephew] Edward "Black Prince" (age 29) and Walter Mauny were present. Around one thousand English were killed, with up to six thousand horses. King Edward III of England believed the event to be an Act of God and proceeded to negotiate with the French resulting in the Treaty of Brétigny.
On 28th April 1360 Guy Beauchamp died from injuries received during the Black Monday Hailstorm.
On 7th September 1362 Joan of the Tower Queen Consort Scotland (age 41) died of plague at Hertford Castle [Map]. She was buried at either Christ Church, Greyfriars [Map] or Greyfriars Church Farringdon Within [Map].
On 20th February 1364 [her former husband] King David II of Scotland (age 39) and Margaret Drummond Queen Consort Scotland (age 24) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of [her former father-in-law] King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland and Elizabeth Burgh Queen Consort Scotland.
On 22nd February 1371 [her former husband] King David II of Scotland (age 46) died without issue at Edinburgh Castle [Map]. He was buried at Holyrood Abbey [Map]. His nephew Robert (age 54) succeeded II King Scotland. He, David, was the last of the male line of the House of Bruce. Robert, the first of the House of Stewart, being the son of his sister Marjorie Bruce who had married Walter Stewart 6th High Steward.
