Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

In April 1271 Maurice Berkeley 7th and 2nd Baron Berkeley was born to [his father] Thomas Berkeley 6th and 1st Baron Berkeley [aged 25] and [his mother] Joan Ferrers Baroness Berkeley at Berkeley Castle [Map]. He a great x 2 grandson of King John of England.

On 4th April 1281 [his grandfather] Maurice Berkeley 5th Baron Berkeley [aged 63] died at Thornbury, Gloucestershire. He was buried at St Augustine's Abbey, Bristol [Map]. His son [his father] Thomas [aged 35] succeeded 6th Baron Berkeley Feudal. [his mother] Joan Ferrers Baroness Berkeley by marriage Baroness Berkeley Feudal.

In 1289 Maurice Berkeley 7th and 2nd Baron Berkeley [aged 17] and Eva Zouche [aged 8] were married. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King John of England.

Around 1296 [his son] Thomas Berkeley 8th and 3rd Baron Berkeley was born to Maurice Berkeley 7th and 2nd Baron Berkeley [aged 24] and [his wife] Eva Zouche [aged 15]. He a great x 3 grandson of King John of England. He married (1) Isabel Hamelin (2) before 1320 his third cousin Margaret Mortimer Baroness Berkeley, daughter of Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March and Joan Geneville Baroness Mortimer 2nd Baroness Geneville, and had issue (3) 30th May 1347 Katherine Clivedon Baroness Berkeley and had issue.

In 1298 [his son] Maurice Berkeley was born to Maurice Berkeley 7th and 2nd Baron Berkeley [aged 26] and [his wife] Eva Zouche [aged 17]. He a great x 3 grandson of King John of England. He married 1302 his third cousin once removed Margery de Vere and had issue.

22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk

On 22nd July 1298 King Edward I of England [aged 59] defeated the Scottish army led by William Wallace during the 22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk at Falkirk [Map] using archers to firstly attack the Scottish shiltrons with the heavy cavalry with infantry completing the defeat.

In 1333 [his former wife] Isabella Clare Baroness Berkeley [aged 70] died.
