Around 1291 Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby was born to [his father] Ralph Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby (age 28) and [his mother] Euphemia Clavering Baroness Neville Raby (age 24).

In 1316 [his son] Euphemia Neville was born to Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 25) and [his future wife] Alice Audley Baroness Greystoke and Neville (age 12). He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

After 14th July 1323 [his future step-son] William Greystoke 2nd Baron Greystoke (age 2) became a ward of Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 32).

On 14th January 1326 Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 35) and Alice Audley Baroness Greystoke and Neville (age 22) were married. She by marriage Baroness Neville Raby. They were sixth cousins. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. She married before 1361 William Dacre 2nd Baron Dacre Gilsland, son of Ralph Dacre 1st Baron Dacre Gilsland and Margaret "Flower of Gillesland" Multon Baroness Dacre of Gilsland 2nd Baroness Multon Gilsland.

On 18th April 1331 [his father] Ralph Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby (age 68) died at Raby Castle, County Durham [Map]. His son Ralph (age 40) succeeded 2nd Baron Neville Raby.

Around 1332 [his son] Ralph Neville was born to Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 41) and [his wife] Alice Audley Baroness Greystoke and Neville (age 28). He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. He married Elizabeth Ledes and had issue.

Around 1337 [his son] John Neville 3rd Baron Neville of Raby was born to Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 46) and [his wife] Alice Audley Baroness Greystoke and Neville (age 33) at Raby Castle, County Durham [Map]. Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Battle of Neville's Cross

On 17th October 1346 at the Battle of Neville's Cross at [Map] the English inflicted a heavy defeat on the Scottish army that had invaded England in compliance with their treaty with the French for mutual support against England.

The English army included: William Deincourt 2nd Baron Deincourt (age 45), Henry Scrope 1st Baron Scrope of Masham (age 34), Ralph Hastings (age 55), Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 55), Archbishop William Zouche, Henry Percy 10th and 2nd Baron Percy (age 45) and John Mowbray 3rd Baron Mowbray (age 35).

Of the Scottish army King David II of Scotland (age 22), John Graham Earl Menteith (age 56) and William "Flower of Chivalry and Knight Liddesdale" Douglas 1st Earl Atholl (age 46) were captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map].

Neil Bruce, John Randolph 3rd Earl of Moray (age 40), David Hay 6th Baron Erroll (age 28) and Edward Keith of Sinton (age 66) were killed.

On 10th November 1347 [his brother-in-law] Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 56) died at Tonbridge, Kent [Map]. He was buried at Tonbridge Priory, Kent [Map]. Earl Gloucester extinct. Baron Audley of Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire 1317dormant.

Before 18th October 1353 [his step-son] William Greystoke 2nd Baron Greystoke (age 32) and Joan Fitzhenry Baroness Greystoke (age 20) were married. She by marriage Baroness Greystoke.

In 1358 [his son-in-law] Henry Percy 1st Earl of Northumberland (age 16) and [his daughter] Margaret Neville (age 28) were married. They were third cousin twice removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 10th July 1359 [his step-son] William Greystoke 2nd Baron Greystoke (age 38) died at Brancepeth Castle, County Durham [Map]. His son Ralph (age 5) succeeded 3rd Baron Greystoke.

Before 1361 [his son-in-law] William Dacre 2nd Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 41) and [his daughter] Catherine Neville Baroness Dacre of Gilsland (age 30) were married. She by marriage Baroness Dacre Gilsland.

On 1st September 1361 [his daughter] Catherine Neville Baroness Dacre of Gilsland (age 31) died.

Before 1362 [his son] John Neville 3rd Baron Neville of Raby (age 24) and [his daughter-in-law] Maud Percy Baroness Neville Raby were married. They were third cousin once removed. In October 1363 [his son] Euphemia Neville (age 47) died.

On 5th August 1367 Ralph Neville 2nd Baron Neville of Raby (age 76) died. His son John (age 30) succeeded 3rd Baron Neville Raby. [his daughter-in-law] Maud Percy Baroness Neville Raby by marriage Baroness Neville Raby.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.
