Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Biography of Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough 1691-1752

In or before 1685 [his father] Richard, Baron Lumley (age 34) and [his mother] Frances Jones (age 17) were married.

In 1691 Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough was born to [his father] Richard Lumley 1st Earl Scarborough (age 41) and [his mother] Frances Jones Countess Scarborough (age 23).

After 1711 [his brother-in-law] George Montagu 1st Earl Halifax (age 27) and [his sister] Mary Lumley Countess Halifax (age 20) were married. She the daughter of [his father] Richard Lumley 1st Earl Scarborough (age 61) and [his mother] Frances Jones Countess Scarborough (age 43). They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1715 [his brother-in-law] George Montagu 1st Earl Halifax (age 31) was created 1st Earl Halifax. [his sister] Mary Lumley Countess Halifax (age 24) by marriage Countess Halifax.

On 17th December 1721 [his father] Richard Lumley 1st Earl Scarborough (age 71) died of apoplexy at Gerard Street, Soho. His son [his brother] Richard (age 35) succeeded 2nd Earl of Scarborough, 3rd Viscount Lumley, 2nd Baron Lumley.

In 1722 Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 31) was elected MP Arundel.

In 1722 [his mother] Frances Jones Countess Scarborough (age 54) died.

On 23rd May 1723 James Saunderson 1st Earl Castleton (age 56) died unmarried. Earl Castleton and Viscount Castleton extinct. His estates were inherited by his cousin Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 32) who added Saunderson to his surname.

In 1724 [his brother] Richard Lumley 2nd Earl Scarborough (age 37) was appointed 542nd Knight of the Garter by King George I (age 63).

On 27th June 1724 Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 33) and Frances Hamilton Countess Scarborough were married. She the daughter of George Hamilton 1st Earl Orkney (age 58) and Elizabeth Villiers Countess Orkney (age 67). He the son of Richard Lumley 1st Earl Scarborough and Frances Jones Countess Scarborough. They were fourth cousins.

In May 1725 [his son] Richard Lumley-Saunderson 4th Earl Scarborough was born to Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 34) and [his wife] Frances Hamilton Countess Scarborough. He married before 1753 Barbara Savile Countess Scarborough, daughter of George Savile 7th Baronet and Mary Pratt, and had issue.

On 12th December 1726 [his sister] Mary Lumley Countess Halifax (age 35) died.

In 1727 Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 36) was elected MP Lincolnshire.

On 29th January 1737 [his father-in-law] George Hamilton 1st Earl Orkney (age 70) died. His daughter [his sister-in-law] Anne succeeded 2nd Countess Orkney.

On 29th January 1740 [his brother] Richard Lumley 2nd Earl Scarborough (age 53) committed suicide by shooting himself through the roof of the mouth possibly as a result of his having told the Dowager Duchess of Manchester (age 34), who he had intended to marry the following day, a state secret which she then shared with her grandmother Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough (age 79) who shared it with William Pulteney 1st Earl Bath (age 55) who shared it with everyone else. His brother Thomas (age 49) succeeded 3rd Earl of Scarborough, 4th Viscount Lumley, 3rd Baron Lumley. [his wife] Frances Hamilton Countess Scarborough by marriage Countess of Scarborough. He left his estates to his youngest brother [his brother] James Lumley (age 34).

On 4th February 1740 Richard Lumley 2nd Earl Scarborough was buried at the Grosvenor Chapel, Mayfair.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 15th March 1752 Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough (age 61) died. His son Richard (age 26) succeeded 4th Earl of Scarborough, 5th Viscount Lumley, 4th Baron Lumley.

On 30th September 1772 [his former wife] Frances Hamilton Countess Scarborough died.

[his daughter] Frances Lumley-Saunderson Countess Ludlow was born to Thomas Lumley-Saunderson 3rd Earl Scarborough and Frances Hamilton Countess Scarborough. She married Peter Ludlow 1st Earl Ludlow and had issue.
