William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. She the daughter of Raymond V Count Barcelona. He the son of Afonso "Conqueror Founder Great" I King Portugal and Malfada Savoy Queen Consort Portugal. They were fifth cousins.

In 1146 [his father] Afonso "Conqueror Founder Great" I King Portugal [age 36] and [his mother] Malfada Savoy Queen Consort Portugal [age 21] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Amadeus Savoy III Count Savoy [age 51] and [his grandmother] Mahaut Albon Countess Savoy. He the son of Henry Burgundy Count Portugal and Teresa Alfónsez Jiménez.

On 11th November 1154 Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal was born to Afonso "Conqueror Founder Great" I King Portugal [age 45] and Malfada Savoy Queen Consort Portugal [age 29]. His nickname "Populator" not a consequence of the number of children he fathered, over sixty apparently, but his policy of populating remote areas in the northern Christian regions of Portugal.

On 3rd December 1157 [his mother] Malfada Savoy Queen Consort Portugal [age 32] died.

Before 15th August 1171 [his brother-in-law] Ferdinand II King Leon [age 34] and [his sister] Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon [age 23] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of [his father] Afonso "Conqueror Founder Great" I King Portugal [age 62] and [his mother] Malfada Savoy Queen Consort Portugal. He the son of Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon and Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon. They were half second cousins.

In 1176 [his daughter] Theresa of Portugal Queen Consort Leon was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 21] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. She married 1191 her first cousin Alfonso IX King Leon, son of Ferdinand II King Leon and Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon, and had issue.

In 1180 [his daughter] Sancha Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 25] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal.

In May 1182 [his son] Constanza Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 27] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal.

On 23rd April 1185 [his son] Alfonso "Fat" II King Portugal was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 30] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal at Coimbra. He married 1206 his second cousin once removed Urraca Ivrea Queen Consort Portugal, daughter of Alfonso VIII King Castile and Eleanor Plantagenet Queen Consort Castile, and had issue.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. On 6th December 1185 [his father] Afonso "Conqueror Founder Great" I King Portugal [age 76] died. His son Sancho [age 31] succeeded I King Portugal and reigned for twenty six years.

In 1188 [his son] Raymond Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 33] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. He died aged less than one years old.

On 23rd February 1188 [his son] Peter Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 33] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal.

On 9th March 1188 [his son] Raymond Burgundy died.

On 24th March 1188 [his son] Ferdinand Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 33] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. He married January 1212 his third cousin once removed Joan I Countess Flanders, daughter of Baldwin IX Count Flanders VI Count Hainaut and Marie Blois Countess Flanders.

In March 1189 [his son] Henry Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 34] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. He died the same year.

In 1191 [his son-in-law] Alfonso IX King Leon [age 19] and Theresa of Portugal Queen Consort Leon [age 15] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 36] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. He the son of Ferdinand II King Leon and Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon [age 43]. They were first cousins.

She married 1215 her second cousin once removed Henry I King Castile, son of Alfonso VIII King Castile and Eleanor Plantagenet Queen Consort Castile.

In 1198 [his daughter] Berengaria Burgundy Queen Consort Denmark was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 43] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal. She married 1214 King Valdemar II of Denmark and had issue.

In 1198 [his daughter] Branca Burgundy was born to Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 43] and Dulce Barcelona Queen Consort Portugal.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

In 1211 [his sister] Urraca Burgundy Queen Consort Leon [age 63] died.

On 26th March 1211 Sancho "Populator" I King Portugal [age 56] died. His son Alfonso [age 25] succeeded II King Portugal. Urraca Ivrea Queen Consort Portugal [age 23] by marriage Queen Consort Portugal.
