Biography of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England 1900-2002

On 16th July 1881 [her father] Claude Bowes-Lyon 14th Earl Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 26) and [her mother] Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 18) were married at the Church of St Peter Petersham, Surrey. He the son of [her grandfather] Claude Bowes-Lyon 13th Earl Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 56) and [her grandmother] Frances Dora Smith Countess Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 48).

On 4th August 1900 Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England was born to Claude Bowes-Lyon 14th Earl Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 45) and Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 37).

On 23rd September 1900 Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England was christened at All Saints Church, Hitchin. Her godmothers included [her aunt] Maud Bowes-Lyon (age 30) and Mary Venetia Cavendish-Bentinck (age 39).

In 1912 George Holford (age 51) and Susannah West Wilson (age 47) were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. [her future husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 16), Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 11), Alexandra Glücksburg Queen Consort England (age 67) and Princess Victoria Windsor (age 43) were present. The Times reported ... "The aisle was lined by non-commissioned officers of the bridegroom's old regiment the 1st Life Guards. The bride who was given away by her two sons, wore a gown of old Point d'Alençon lace with a train of gold brocade veiled in chiffon. Instead of a hat she wore a headdress of gold lace and pink roses and she carried a bouquet of orchids ... The King and Queen gave Sir George Holford a pair of sleeve links bearing the Royal monogram in diamonds and rubies."

On 28th February 1922 Henry Lascelles 6th Earl Harewood (age 39) and [her future sister-in-law] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood (age 24) were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His best-man was Major Victor Mackenzie 3rd Baronet (age 39). Her bridesmaids included Doris Hilda Gordon-Lennox (age 25), Mary Cambridge Duchess Beaufort (age 24), Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (age 21), Princess Maud Duff Countess Southesk (age 28), Rachel Cavendish (age 20), Helen Diana Bridgeman (age 14), Mary Beatrice Thynne Baroness Nunburnholme (age 18) and Princess May of Teck (age 16). The wedding was attending by her father and mother [her future father-in-law] King George V of the United Kingdom (age 56) and [her future mother-in-law] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England (age 54). She the daughter of King George V of the United Kingdom and Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England. He the son of Henry Ulrick Lascelles 5th Earl Harewood (age 75) and Florence Katharine Bridgeman Countess Harewood (age 63).

On 21st April 1926 [her daughter] Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom was born to [her husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 30) and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 25).

On 31st March 1928 [her brother-in-law] Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester (age 28) was created 1st Duke Gloucester.

On 6th October 1929 Henry Ulrick Lascelles 5th Earl Harewood (age 83) died. His son Henry (age 47) succeeded 6th Earl Harewood in Yorkshire, 6th Viscount Lascelles, 6th Baron Harewood of Harewood in Yorkshire. [her sister-in-law] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood (age 32) by marriage Countess Harewood in Yorkshire.

On 21st August 1930 [her daughter] Princess Margaret was born to [her husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 34) and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 30) at Glamis Castle.

On 9th October 1934 [her brother-in-law] Prince George Windsor 1st Duke Kent (age 31) was created 1st Duke Kent.

On 29th November 1934 [her brother-in-law] Prince George Windsor 1st Duke Kent (age 31) and Princess Marina Glücksburg Duchess Kent (age 27) were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Kent. The wedding was followed by a Greek ceremony in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace [Map]. She had eight bridesmaids: her first cousins Princess Irene Glücksburg (age 30), He the son of [her father-in-law] King George V of the United Kingdom (age 69) and [her mother-in-law] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England (age 67). They were second cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 6th November 1935 [her brother-in-law] Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester (age 35) and Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott Duchess Gloucester (age 33) were married at Buckingham Palace [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester. She the daughter of John Scott 7th Duke Buccleuch 9th Duke Queensberry (deceased) and Margaret Alice "Molly" Bridgeman Duchess Buccleuch Duchess Queensbury (age 63). He the son of [her father-in-law] King George V of the United Kingdom (age 70) and [her mother-in-law] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England (age 68).

On 20th January 1936 [her father-in-law] King George V of the United Kingdom (age 70) died. His son [her brother-in-law] Edward (age 41) succeeded VIII King of the United Kingdom. Duke York merged with the crown.

On 3rd June 1937 [her brother-in-law] King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom (age 42) and Wallis Warfield aka Simpson Duchess of Windsor (age 40) were married at the Château de Candé. No member of his family attended. He the son of [her father-in-law] King George V of the United Kingdom and [her mother-in-law] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England (age 70).

On 23rd June 1938 [her mother] Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 75) died.

Before 25th April 1939 Thomas William Anson (age 26) and Anne Ferelith Bowes-Lyon (age 21) were married at St Margaret's Church, Westminster [Map]. The wedding was attended by the [her husband] King (age 43) and Queen (age 38), Princesses [her daughter] Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (age 13) and [her daughter] Princess Margaret (age 8) - see Pathe. He the son of Thomas Edward Anson 4th Earl Lichfield (age 55) and Evelyn Maud Keppel Countess Lichfield (age 52).

In 1941 Hugh Molyneux 7th Earl of Sefton (age 42) and Josephine Gwynne Armstrong Countess Sefton (age 38). Whilst he was a good friend of the [her brother-in-law] Duke of Windsor (age 46), his wife was a good friend of the Duke's wife Wallis Warfield aka Simpson Duchess of Windsor (age 44). Josephine Gwynne Armstrong Countess Sefton by marriage Countess Sefton.

On 7th November 1944 [her father] Claude Bowes-Lyon 14th Earl Strathmore and Kinghorne (age 89) died. His son [her brother] Patrick (age 60) succeeded 15th Earl Strathmore and Kinghorne. Dorothy Beatrix Godolphin Osborne (age 55) by marriage Countess Strathmore and Kinghorne.

On 21st October 1947 David Allan Bethell 5th Baron Westbury (age 25) and Ursula James (age 23) were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. Princesses [her daughter] Elizabeth (age 21) and [her daughter] Margaret (age 17) attended the wedding, as did the [her brother-in-law] Duke (age 47) and Duchess (age 45) of Gloucester.

On 20th November 1947 [her son-in-law] Philip Mountbatten Duke Edinburgh (age 26) and [her daughter] Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (age 21) were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. She the daughter of [her husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 51) and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 47). They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

On 29th September 1949 George Henry Hubert Lascelles 7th Earl Harewood (age 26) and Marion Stein Countess Harewood (age 22) were married at St Mark's Church North Audley Street. [her husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 53), his uncle, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 49), [her mother-in-law] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England (age 82) [her sister-in-law] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood (age 52), his mother, and other members of the Royal family attended the wedding. He the son of Henry Lascelles 6th Earl Harewood and Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood.

Marion Stein Countess Harewood: On 18th October 1926 she was born at Vienna [Map]. On 6th March 2014 she died.

On 16th September 1950 Prince George Valdemar Carl Axel of Denmark (age 30) and Anne Ferelith Bowes-Lyon (age 32) were married at Glamis Castle. As a consequence of the marriage being between a divorced person whose spouse was still living the Church of England opposed the marriage and ordered the withdrawal of the Scottish Episcopal clergyman. The Queen (age 50) stated that she would join the wedding party only for the reception and would remain in an adjoining drawing room while the ceremony took place.

On 21st April 1956 Colin Tennant 3rd Baron Glenconner (age 29) and Anne Veronica Coke Baroness Glenconner (age 23) were married at St Withburga's Church, Holkham [Map]. Bishop Percy Herbert (age 70) presided. The guests included Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 55) and [her daughter] Princess Margaret (age 25). Princess Margaret's future husband [her future son-in-law] Antony Armstrong-Jones 1st Earl of Snowdon (age 26) took the photographs. She the daughter of Major Thomas William Edward Coke 5th Earl of Leicester (age 47) and Elizabeth Mary Yorke Countess of Leicester (age 44).

On 6th May 1960 [her son-in-law] Antony Armstrong-Jones 1st Earl of Snowdon (age 30) and [her daughter] Princess Margaret (age 29) were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. The ceremony was the first royal wedding to be broadcast on television. She the daughter of [her former husband] King George VI of the United Kingdom and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England (age 59).

Colin Tennant 3rd Baron Glenconner (age 33) and Anne Veronica Coke Baroness Glenconner (age 27), whose wedding the couple had attended four years before, offered them a piece of land on their privately owned island, Mustique, and agreed to build a house for the couple on the land. It was designed in 1971 by uncle to Lord Snowdon, Oliver Messel, and named "Les Jolies Eaux" aka "The Pretty Waters"

On 9th February 2002 [her daughter] Princess Margaret (age 71) died at King Edward VII's Hospital. She was buried at King George VI Memorial Chapel, St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle [Map].

On 30th March 2002 Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England died.
