Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge 1797-1889

On 25th July 1797 Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge was born to Frederick Hesse-Kassel [aged 49]. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1815 [her future brother-in-law] Ernest Augustus King Hanover [aged 43] and Frederica Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort Hanover [aged 36] were married. She by marriage Duchess Cumberland and Teviotdale. He the son of [her future father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 76] and [her future mother-in-law] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England [aged 70]. They were first cousins.

On 22nd July 1816 William Frederick Hanover 2nd Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh [aged 40] and [her future sister-in-law] Mary Hanover Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh [aged 40] were married at St James's Palace [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. She the daughter of [her future father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 78] and [her future mother-in-law] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England [aged 72]. He the son of William Henry Hanover 1st Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. They were first cousins. He a great grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 29th May 1818 [her future brother-in-law] Edward Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Kent and Strathearn [aged 50] and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn [aged 31] were married at Ehrenburg Palace. She by marriage Duchess Kent and Strathearn. She the daughter of Francis Saxe Coburg Gotha I Duke Saxe Coburg Gotha and Augusta Reuss Duchess Saxe Coburg Gotha [aged 61]. He the son of [her future father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 79] and [her future mother-in-law] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England [aged 74]. They were third cousin once removed.

On 1st June 1818 Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge [aged 44] and Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 20] were married. She by marriage Duchess Cambridge. The difference in their ages was 23 years. He the son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 79] and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England [aged 74]. They were second cousins. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 11th July 1818 [her brother-in-law] King William IV of the United Kingdom [aged 52] and Queen Adelaide of England [aged 25] were married at Kew, Surrey. She by marriage Duchess Clarence and St Andrews. The difference in their ages was 26 years. He the son of [her father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 80].

On 26th March 1819 [her son] Prince George Hanover 2nd Duke Cambridge was born to [her husband] Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge [aged 45] and Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 21] at Cambridge House, Hanover, Lower Saxony. He a grandson of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.66%. He married 8th January 1847 Sarah Fairbrother and had issue.

On 27th December 1830 Lucius Cary 10th Viscount Falkland [aged 27] and Amelia Fitz-Clarence Viscountess Falkland [aged 23] were married at the Brighton Royal Pavilion. [her brother-in-law] King William IV [aged 65] gave away his daughter. The service was conducted by Bishop Charles Richard Sumner. She the illegitmate daughter of King William IV of the United Kingdom and Dorothea Bland aka "Mrs Jordan".

On 2nd May 1831 [her brother-in-law] Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex [aged 58] and Cecilia Gore aka Underwood Duchess of Inverness [aged 46] were married contrary to the Royal Marriages Act. On the same day she assumed the surname Underwood by Royal Licence. She did not assume the title Duchess of Sussex. She the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore 2nd Earl Arran and Elizabeth Underwood Countess of Arran. He the son of [her father-in-law] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland and [her mother-in-law] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England.

On 27th November 1833 [her daughter] Princess Mary Adelaide Hanover was born to [her husband] Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge [aged 59] and Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 36] at Hanover Lower Saxony. She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.66%. She married 12th June 1866 her third cousin once removed Francis Teck and had issue.

On 20th May 1837 [her father] Frederick Hesse-Kassel [aged 89] died.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. The old Duchess of Cambridge [aged 46] was one of the house-party at Egerton Lodge, and she very good-naturedly offered to take care of me on my journey to London, as we were both leaving the same clay. We travelled together, and directly the train started, the Duchess opened a large reticule and took out a German sausage which she devoured with great relish, cutting slices off it with a silver knife, with which she transferred them to her mouth.

On 27th May 1848 [her sister-in-law] Princess Sophia Hanover [aged 70] died at Vicarage Place Kensington. Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 50] and Marie Luise Victoria Saxe Coburg Gotha Duchess Kent and Strathearn [aged 61] were present.

On 8th July 1850 [her husband] Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge [aged 76] died. His son Prince [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Duke Cambridge.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. In January 1859, I went to the House of Lords to hear the debate from the Peeresses Gallery. I was sitting near the Duchess of Cambridge [aged 61] and [her daughter] Princess Mary [aged 25], when Maria, Marchioness of Ailesbury [aged 46], made her appearance. I had not met her since my marriage, but I could see by her look that for some reasons of her own she meant to cut me, so I thought I would carry the war into the enemy's camp, and just as she was about to pass me, I said, "Oh, Lady Ailesbury, you may like to know that before Lady Cardigan died she told my Lord [aged 61] all about you and your illegitimate children!".

Lady A. looked nervously round and said in an agitated whisper, "Hush, hush, my dear, I'm coming to lunch with you to-morrow". She never asked me what Lady Cardigan had particularly said, but from that day we were outwardly the best of friends.

On my return to England as Countess of Cardigan, I need hardly say that every one was very anxious to be on good terms with me, and my own family were the first to make peaceful overtures. I had no wish to keep up the quarrel. As my marriage plainly showed how right I was in trusting Cardigan, and the motives of our much-discussed friendship were now openly vindicated, I let bygones be by-gones, and we were all good friends again.

On 12th June 1866 [her son-in-law] Francis Teck [aged 28] and Princess Mary Adelaide Hanover [aged 32] were married at St Anne's Church Kew, Surrey. She the daughter of Adolphus Hanover 1st Duke Cambridge and Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 68]. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland. She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 6th April 1889 Princess Augusta Hesse-Kassel Duchess Cambridge [aged 91] died.
