James "Old Pretender" Stewart 1688-1766

On 3rd September 1660 [his father] James, Duke of York [aged 26] and Anne Hyde [aged 23] were married in secret. She by marriage Duchess York. She gave birth to their son [his half-brother] Charles Stewart seven weeks later. She the daughter of Edward Hyde 1st Earl Clarendon [aged 51] and Frances Aylesbury Countess Clarendon [aged 43]. He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and [his grandmother] Henrietta Maria Bourbon Queen Consort England [aged 50].

On 20th September 1673 [his father] James, Duke of York [aged 39] and [his mother] Mary of Modena Queen Consort England Scotland and Ireland [aged 14] were married. The difference in their ages was 24 years. He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and [his grandmother] Henrietta Maria Bourbon Queen Consort England.

On 10th June 1688 James "Old Pretender" Stewart was born to King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 54] and Mary of Modena Queen Consort England Scotland and Ireland [aged 29]. Winifred Trentham [aged 43] and Charles Middleton 2nd Earl Middleton [aged 38] were present.

John Evelyn's Diary. 10th June 1688. A YOUNG PRINCE born, which will cause disputes.

John Evelyn's Diary. 17th June 1688. Was a day of thanksgiving in London and ten miles about for the young Prince's birth; a form of prayer made for the purpose by the Bishop of Rochester [aged 53].

John Evelyn's Diary. 23rd August 1688. After long trials of the doctors to bring up the little Prince of Wales by hand (so many of her [his uncle] Majesty's children having died infants) not succeeding, a country nurse, the wife of a tile maker, is taken to give it suck.

John Evelyn's Diary. 29th October 1688. There was a Council called, to which were summoned the Archbishop of Canterbury [aged 71], the Judges, the Lord Mayor, etc. The Queen Dowager [aged 49], and all the ladies and lords who were present at the [his mother] Queen Consort's [aged 30] labor, were to give their testimony upon oath of the Prince of Wales's birth, recorded both at the Council Board and at the Chancery a day or two after. This procedure was censured by some as below his [his father] Majesty [aged 55] to condescend to, on the talk of the people. It was remarkable that on this occasion the Archbishop, Marquis of Halifax [aged 54], the Earls of Clarendon and Nottingham [aged 41], refused to sit at the Council table among Papists, and their bold telling his Majesty that whatever was done while such sat among them was unlawful and incurred praemunire;-at least, if what I heard be true.

John Evelyn's Diary. 20th March 1692. My son was made one of the Commissioners of the Revenue and Treasury of Ireland, to which employment he had a mind, far from my wishes. I visited the Earl of Peterborough [aged 70], who showed me the picture of the Prince of Wales [aged 3], newly brought out of France, seeming in my opinion very much to resemble the Queen [aged 33] his mother, and of a most vivacious countenance.

On 26th March 1695 [his illegitimate half-brother] James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 24] and [his sister-in-law] Honora Burke Duchess Berwick [aged 21] were married at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines. She by marriage Duchess Berwick. She the daughter of William Burke 7th Earl Clanricarde and Helen MacCarty Countess Clanricarde [aged 63]. He the illegitmate son of [his father] King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 61] and Arabella Churchill [aged 46].

On 3rd April 1695 [his brother-in-law] Piers Butler 1st Earl Newcastle [aged 43] and [his half-sister] Henrietta Fitzjames Countess Newcastle [aged 28] were married. She by marriage Countess Newcastle in Limerick. She the daughter of [his father] King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 61] and Anne Hyde Duchess of York.

In 1698 [his illegitimate half-brother] James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 27] and [his sister-in-law] Anne Bulkeley Duchess Berwick were married. She by marriage Duchess Berwick. He the illegitmate son of [his father] King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 64] and Arabella Churchill [aged 48].

On 12th March 1699 [his future brother-in-law] John Sheffield 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby [aged 50] and Catherine Greville Duchess Buckingham and Normandby were married at St Clement Danes Church, Westminster [Map]. She by marriage Countess Mulgrave. He the son of Edmund Sheffield 2nd Earl Mulgrave and Elizabeth Cranfield Countess Mulgrave [aged 91]. They were sixth cousins.

In October 1699 [his brother-in-law] James Annesley 3rd Earl Anglesey [aged 25] and [his illegitimate half-sister] Catherine Darnley Duchess Buckingham and Normandby [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Anglesey. She the illegitmate daughter of [his father] King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 65] and Catherine Sedley Countess Dorchester and Portmore [aged 41]. He the son of James Annesley 2nd Earl Anglesey and Elizabeth Manners Countess Anglesey [aged 45]. They were fourth cousin twice removed.

On 16th March 1705 [his brother-in-law] John Sheffield 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby [aged 56] and [his illegitimate half-sister] Catherine Darnley Duchess Buckingham and Normandby [aged 25] were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. She by marriage Duchess of Buckingham and Normanby. The difference in their ages was 31 years. She the illegitmate daughter of [his father] King James II of England Scotland and Ireland and Catherine Sedley Countess Dorchester and Portmore [aged 47]. He the son of Edmund Sheffield 2nd Earl Mulgrave and Elizabeth Cranfield Countess Mulgrave [aged 97].

In 1707 Samuel Masham 1st Baron Masham [aged 28] and Abigail Hill Baroness Masham [aged 37] were married. [his half-sister] Queen Anne of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 41] was present. She contributed £2,000 to Abigail's dowry.

On 20th May 1714 [his nephew] James Waldegrave 1st Earl Waldegrave [aged 30] and Mary Webb [aged 19] were married. He the son of [his former brother-in-law] Henry Waldegrave 1st Baron Waldegrave and [his half-sister] Henrietta Fitzjames Countess Newcastle [aged 47]. They were fourth cousins. He a grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 31st December 1716 [his illegitimate nephew] James Fitz James 2nd Duke Berwick [aged 20] and Catalina Ventura Colón Duchess Berwick 9th Duchess Veragua [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of Pedro Manuel Colón 7th Duke Veragua. He the son of [his illegitimate half-brother] James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 46] and [his former sister-in-law] Honora Burke Duchess Berwick.

On 7th May 1718 [his mother] Mary of Modena Queen Consort England Scotland and Ireland [aged 59] died.

On 3rd September 1719 James "Old Pretender" Stewart [aged 31] and Maria Clementina Sobieska [aged 17] were married. He the son of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland and Mary of Modena Queen Consort England Scotland and Ireland.

On 31st December 1720 [his son] Charles Edward "Bonnie Prince Charlie" Stewart was born to James "Old Pretender" Stewart [aged 32] and [his wife] Maria Clementina Sobieska [aged 18] at Palazzo Muti, via del Corso. He a grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 28th March 1772 Louise Stolberg Gedern.

On 11th March 1725 [his son] Cardinal Henry Benedict Stewart was born to James "Old Pretender" Stewart [aged 36] and [his wife] Maria Clementina Sobieska [aged 22]. He a grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 18th January 1735 [his wife] Maria Clementina Sobieska [aged 32] died.

On 1st January 1766 James "Old Pretender" Stewart [aged 77] died.
