The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy
The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. On 19th January 1886 [her father] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie [aged 29] and [her mother] Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 19] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Arthur Saunders Gore 5th Earl Arran [aged 47] and [her grandmother] Edith Jocelyn.
On 21st November 1890 Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy was born to David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie [aged 34] and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 24].
On 11th June 1900 [her father] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie [aged 44] died. His son David [aged 6] succeeded 12th Earl Airlie.
On 25th November 1909 Clement Freeman-Mitford [aged 32] and Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 19] were married at the Private Chapel, Cortachy Castle, Angus. They had two daughters, Rosemary and Clementine who both died in 2005. She the daughter of David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 43]. They were first cousins.
On 13th May 1915 [her husband] Clement Freeman-Mitford [aged 38] was killed in action at the Battle of Loos. He was buried at Grave Reference: I. E. 8., Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Vlamertinghe, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium. The wrought iron gates at the cemetery were presented in his memory by the family of the late [her father-in-law] Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford [aged 78], Lord Redesdale and Clementina [aged 60], Lady Redesdale.
On 17th July 1917 [her brother] David Ogilvy 12th Earl of Airlie [aged 23] and [her sister-in-law] Alexandra Bridget Coke Countess Airlie [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Countess Airlie. She the daughter of Thomas William Coke 3rd Earl of Leicester [aged 68] and Alice Emily White Countess Leicester [aged 61]. He the son of [her father] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and [her mother] Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 51].
On 11th July 1918 Henry Courtney Brocklehurst [aged 30] and Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 27] were married. She the daughter of David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 52].
On 6th April 1926 [her son] John Ogilvy Brocklehurst 3rd Baronet was born to [her husband] Henry Courtney Brocklehurst [aged 37] and Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 35].
In 1931 Henry Courtney Brocklehurst [aged 42] and Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 40] were divorced.
On 21st February 1933 Harold Bligh Nutting [aged 51] and Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 42] were married. She the daughter of David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 66].
On 28th June 1942 [her former husband] Henry Courtney Brocklehurst [aged 54] was killed in action in Burma. His body was never found.
On 7th July 1954 [her husband] Harold Bligh Nutting [aged 72] died.
On 7th April 1956 [her mother] Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 90] died.
In December 1973 Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 83] died.
